Haemoglobin status of adult women of two ethnic groups living in a peri-urban area of Kolkata city, India: a micro-level study.

A micro level study on the haemoglobin status of 127 Munda (a tribe) and 174 Poundrakshatriya (Pod) (caste) women were conducted in the peri-urban area of Kolkata City, India. The two ethnic groups were selected in order to find out whether populations residing in the same habitat, with similar medical and health care facilities have similar haemoglobin status. Results indicate that there exists very high percentage of anaemia in both the ethnic groups and 100 percent anaemia was observed among the Munda. Mean haemoglobin level was higher among the women of both the ethnic groups, consuming ca

Oral drug therapy for multiple neglected tropical diseases: a systematic review.

CONTEXT: The neglected tropical diseases include 13 conditions that occur in areas of extreme poverty and are poverty promoting. The neglected tropical diseases produce a disease burden almost as great as that associated with human immunodeficiency virus/AIDS, tuberculosis, or malaria, yet are virtually unknown by health care workers in North America, because they occur almost exclusively in the poorest regions of the world. Seven of the most prevalent diseases have existing oral drug treatments. Identifying treatments that are effective against more than 1 disease could facilitate efficient a

Seroepidemiology of strongyloidiasis in the Peruvian Amazon.

A stool and serosurvey for Strongyloides stercoralis was conducted in a community in the Peruvian Amazon region. Strongyloidiasis stercoralis was identified in the stool of 69 (8.7%) of 792 participants. Six hundred nine sera were tested using by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which had a sensitivity of 92% and a specificity of 94%; 442 (72%) were positive. In multivariable logistic regression models, having S. stercoralis in stool was associated with hookworm in the same specimen (odds ratio [OR] = 4.44, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.02-9.79), occasionally or never wearing s

In vivo kinetics and nature of rat IgE-bearing lymphocytes after IgE stimulation.

Surface IgE-bearing (sIgE+) cells were studied in BN and rnu/rnu athymic rats after Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection or i.p. injection of unpurified or purified IgE from plasmacytoma ascitic fluid. The number of sIgE+ cells increased markedly after a serum IgE increase without change in the proportion of sIgM+ and sIgD+ cells. A high percentage of the sIgE+ cells bore cytophilic IgE. Receptors for IgE were induced with a 2.56-micrograms IgE injection/100 g body weight and reached a maximum with 1.6 mg IgE/100 g body weight. They appeared less than 4 hr after a single injection of purifie

An evaluation of levamisole for treatment of ascariasis.

Levamisole (Decaris, Belgium) was tested in Iran, Brazil, and in Mississippi and Louisiana for its efficacy as a single-dose oral treatment for Ascaris infections. Subjects were children ages 2 to 15 years, and numbers treated with levamisole and comparative anthelmintics are as follows: 453 with levamisole; 461 with piperazine citrate; 17 with pyrantel pamoate; and 19 with a placebo. Cure rates and total reduction in mean egg counts observed were 92% and 98% respectively for levamisole and 66% and 90% for piperazine. Sixteen of 17 treated with pyrantel pamoate were cured. In none of the drugs

PULMONARY MANIFESTATIONS OF PARASITIC INFESTATIONS.

Parasitic infestations in man may cause transient or permanent pulmonary lesions. The lesions occur during migration and evolution of the parasites, during parasitemia, or during the final habitat. These manifestations, though infrequent in Canadian medical practice, present difficulties in diagnosis. Life cycles, mode of entry, and migration of parasites in the human body are described and illustrative case histories presented. In this series, transient pulmonary changes were associated with Ascaris lumbricoides, Ankylostoma duodenale, filariasis, Giardia lamblia and Trichinella spiralis; per

Health and disease: exploring the relation between parasitic infections, child nutrition status, and markets.

Research in bioarchaeology and among living people provides insight into the biological and biocultural consequences of subsistence, political, and economic transitions. Central to this effort is examining infectious disease, such as diarrheal disease, respiratory infections, and parasitic infections because they are an important source of nutritional and energetic stress in both past and current groups. Although infection may not always result in overt disease, frequent exposure results in biological stress with a negative effect on child growth and, by extension, health. The goal of this art

Malaria and helminth co-infection in children living in a malaria endemic setting of mount Cameroon and predictors of anemia.

A study was carried out with 425 children aged 0-14 yr residing in Bolifamba, Cameroon, to investigate the effect of Plasmodium falciparum malaria and intestinal helminth coinfection on anemia and to identify significant predictors of anemia in the community. Blood was collected by finger prick to determine malaria parasitemia and packed cell volume (PCV). The Kato-Katz technique was used to assess the prevalence and egg load of intestinal helminths. The prevalence of P. falciparum malaria, intestinal helminth infections, and coinfection was 64.2%, 38.3%, and 24.7%, respectively. Coinfections

Polyparasitism on the Kenya coast. 1. Prevalence, and association between parasitic infections.

A partially-stratified sample survey of people living in the catchment area of Kilifi General Hospital, Coast Province, Kenya, identified 19 species of parasites in blood and intestines. Age-prevalence curves of the common infections were of two distinct types, possibly reflecting the host's ability to mount a partially effective immune response. Although statistically-significant associations between pairs of infections were clearly demonstrable, these were almost wholly explained by environmental heterogeneity and epidemiological coincidence. There was no evidence of positive or negative inf

Modulation of the biologic activities of IgE-binding factor. V. The role of glycosylation-enhancing factor and glycosylation-inhibiting factor in determining the nature of IgE-binding factors.

Glycosylation-enhancing factor (GEF) and IgE-potentiating factor were detected in culture supernatants of rat mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) cells obtained 14 days after infection with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nb), but not in supernatants of MLN cells of 8-day Nb-infected rats. Both factors were also released from T cells upon antigenic stimulation of KLH + alum-primed spleen cells. The GEF from the Nb-infected rats and KLH + alum-primed spleen cells had affinity for p-aminobenzamidine agarose and were inactivated by phenylmethylsulfonylfluoride, an inhibitor of serine proteases. These resu

Mucosal mast cells. II. Effects of anti-allergic compounds on histamine secretion by isolated intestinal mast cells.

Functional mast cells have been isolated from the lamina propria of the small intestine of rats infected with the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. The cells released histamine on challenge with specific antigen, anti-rat IgE, concanavalin A, and calcium ionophores but were less responsive than peritoneal mast cells (MMC) from the same animals. Intestinal mucosa mast cells (PMC) were refractory to the action of the basic secretagogues peptide 401 from bee venom and compound 48/80. The anti-allergic compounds disodium cromoglycate (less than or equal to 10(-3) M), AH 9679 (less than or equ

The prevalence and the etiology of the nutritional anemias in Guyana.

A survey was carried out in Guyana to determine the prevalence and the etiology of the nutritional anemias among both sexes, in various age groups, and in pregnant and lactating women. The sample consisted of 590 subjects drawn from 103 households selected by multistage cluster sampling. Anthropometric and hematological measurements and stool investigations for intestinal parasites were carried out in each subject. Socioeconomic and other demographic data were obtained for each household. High prevalences of anemia, although of a relatively mild degree, were found among all age groups especial

The potential role of roaming dogs in establishing a geographically novel life cycle of taeniids (Echinococcus spp. and Taenia spp.) in a non-endemic area.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) is endemic in humans and livestock in many pastoral communities in Kenya. The distribution of the disease is enhanced by several factors, including livestock trade, which has allowed for the spread of CE to non-endemic areas such as western Kenya. Dogs' roaming behaviour, with consequent contamination of the environment with intestinal parasites, could then lead to parasite establishment. This study examined dogs' infection levels with taeniid eggs and their potential role in contaminating the environment with intestinal parasites. METHODOLOGY: We sele

Admissions to a rural hospital in the West Nile District of Uganda over a 27 year period.

An analysis is presented of data on all 30 129 inpatient admissions to a mission hospital in the West Nile District of Uganda in the 27 year period from July 1951 to August 1978. For most of this period the hospital was staffed by the same two doctors. For each patient admitted, a record was made of their age (adult or child), sex, place of residence, duration of stay in hospital, diagnosis and vital status at discharge. The annual number of admissions increased steadily from around 300 in 1952 to over 1600 in 1966 and subsequently declined to about 900 in 1977. Sixty-five per cent of admissio

Prevalence of intestinal parasites and the absence of soil-transmitted helminths in Añatuya, Santiago del Estero, Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasites (IP) have been reported in point studies from different provinces of Argentina. The presence of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) was detected in many of these studies, including varied prevalences of all five species of STH in the north were the climate is more appropriate for transmission. Nonetheless, Argentina lacks a comprehensive prevalence map of STH. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites, focusing on STH, in rural and peri-urban areas of Añatuya, Santiago del Estero Province and identifying risk fa
