Anxiolytic agents, mainly benzodiazepines, have been used to treat symptomatic disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Our aim was to evaluate the effect of diazepam on the TMJ of rats with increased occlusal vertical dimension (iOVD). Forty male rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups: control rats were given sham iOVD plus saline solution daily for 7 days. The first experimental group was given sham iOVD plus diazepam 2.5mg/kg/intramuscularly daily for 7 days (diazepam alone group); the second had iOVD induced in molars for 7 days plus saline daily for 7 days (iOVD alone group); and

The effect of combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment was studied retrospectively in 24 patients with skeletal class III malocclusions with mandibular hyperplasia, particularly the effect on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc position. The patients underwent preoperative orthodontic treatment, orthognathic surgery, and postoperative orthodontic treatment. The patients were studied clinically, radiographically with lateral cephalometric radiograph and MRI to locate the position of the TMJ disc in relation to the glenoid fossa. One patient had less pain after treatment, one lost abnormal

Clinical studies have shown a close association between temporomandibular joint hypermobility (TMJH) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). While pathological change of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) is one of the most emphasized in studies of TMD, there have been no detailed clinical reports of the LPM studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in TMJH. This study investigates structural and pathological alterations involving the LPM in patients with TMJH using MRI. A retrospective analysis was made of high-field MRI images from 98 patients with TMJH. LPMs of 143 joints were analyzed.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a chronic systemic disease of childhood that affects synovial joints including the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Individuals with JRA of the TMJ frequently show aberrations in mandibulofacial development. Since the basis for these developmental perturbations is poorly understood, they remain a perplexing clinical problem to manage. To begin dissecting the mechanisms for altered craniofacial development in JRA of the TMJ, we characterized the gross morphologic adaptations in the facial skeleton in a juvenile animal model of TMJ arthritis. Arthritis was in

Observer performance and diagnostic outcome in the diagnosis of the disk position of the temporomandibular joint by arthrography were investigated. Three different radiographic techniques were studied: fluoroscopy, fluoroscopy in combination with lateral transcranial radiography, and fluoroscopy in combination with corrected sagittal tomography. Seven observers were asked to assess 30 joints representing three diagnoses, namely superior disk position and anterior disk position with and without reduction. The intraobserver agreement was high for all three techniques. The interobserver agreement

BACKGROUND: Management of high sagittal split fractures of the mandibular condyle remains a formidable surgical challenge due to limited visualization, technical difficulties with direct in situ fixation, and the high risk of secondary avascular necrosis or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical outcomes and technical efficacy of the "Motamed Technique," a standardized protocol involving extracorporeal rigid internal fixation followed by anatomic re-implantation for complex high condylar split fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective evaluation was conducted
