The future of biomarkers for vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID): proceedings of the 2025 annual workshop of the Albert research institute for white matter and cognition.

Advances in biomarkers and pathophysiology of vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) are expected to bring greater mechanistic insights, more targeted treatments, and potentially disease-modifying therapies. The 2025 Annual Workshop of the Albert Research Institute for White Matter and Cognition, sponsored by the Leo and Anne Albert Charitable Trust since 2015, focused on novel biomarkers for VCID. The meeting highlighted the complexity of dementia, emphasizing that the majority of cases involve multiple brain pathologies, with vascular pathology typically present.

Cultural and social factors associated with generalized anxiety disorder among adolescent mothers during the postpartum period in Malawi: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The postnatal period is an important time for adolescent mothers to regain their health as they adjust to life with their infants. However, it is also a time when mothers are vulnerable to mental health problems. Generalized anxiety disorders (GADs) are among the common mental disorders that can impact mothers. Anxiety disorders can have adverse effects on a child's cognitive development. However, there is a scarcity of studies pertaining to anxiety disorders among adolescent mothers in Malawi. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among adolescent postnatal mothers aged

Musculoskeletal injuries from gender-based violence at a tertiary hospital orthopaedic centre, central South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Limited research describing the pattern of orthopaedic musculoskeletal injuries among gender-based violence (GBV) victims has been conducted in South Africa. With the high prevalence of GBV in our locality, there is a need for healthcare workers to identify this vulnerable population for early management, intervention, and prevention of subsequent assaults. This study aimed to describe the pattern of musculoskeletal injuries resulting from physical assaults due to GBV. METHODS: This retrospective analysis was conducted in the orthopaedic department of a tertiary hospital in Sout

Maternal, prenatal and postnatal risk factors for early child physical abuse: a French nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying risk factors for early child physical abuse (CPA) is crucial for understanding its mechanisms and defining effective preventive interventions. We aimed to identify maternal, prenatal and postnatal factors associated with early CPA. METHODS: This cohort study was based on comprehensive data from the Mother-Child EPI-MERES nationwide register and included all infants born alive in France between 2010 and 2019. Factors associated with early CPA (before age 1) were identified with a multilevel Cox regression model with random intercepts at the regional level. FINDINGS: Am

What Makes Bangladeshi Pregnant Women More Compliant to Iron-Folic Acid Supplementation: A Nationally Representative Cross-Sectional Survey Result.

BACKGROUND: Iron-Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS) is an effective strategy to prevent iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy. We aimed to explore the key factors associated with compliance to IFA tablets in Bangladesh. METHODS: This study analyzed the 2017-2018 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey data of 3828 pregnant women aged 15-49 years. We categorized compliance into two categories; at least 90 days and full 180 days of consumption. We performed multivariable logistic regression to identify the association between key factors and IFAS compliance. RESULTS: The prevalence of consum

Longitudinal prospective study examining the effects of the timing of prenatal stress on infant and child regulatory functioning: the Michigan Prenatal Stress Study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: A considerable literature implicates prenatal stress as a critical determinant of poor psychological functioning in childhood and beyond. However, knowledge about whether the timing of prenatal stress differentially influences the development of child outcomes, including psychopathology, is virtually unknown. The primary aim of our study is to examine how the timing of prenatal stress differentially affects early childhood regulatory functioning as a marker of psychopathology. Our second aim is to examine the mediating effects of maternal physiological and psychological factors d

Lived experiences of Ugandan women who had recovered from a clinical diagnosis of postpartum depression: a phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression affects a significant proportion of women of childbearing age. The birth of a newborn baby is normally considered a joyful event, inhibiting mothers from expressing their depressive feelings. If the condition is not well understood and managed, mothers with postpartum depression are likely to experience suicidal ideation or even commit suicide. This study explored lived experiences of women who had recovered from a clinical diagnosis of postpartum depression in southwestern Uganda. METHODS: This phenomenological study adopted the explorative approach through

Short-term interruptions to sex work among a prospective cohort of street-based cisgender female sex workers in Baltimore.

BACKGROUND: Street-based female sex workers (FSW) often cycle in and out of sex work engagement. For many FSW, substance use plays a critical role in sex work entry, continuation, and interruptions. We examined individual, interpersonal, and structural correlates of short-term interruptions of sex work among street-based FSW in an urban environment. METHODS: Data were from 205 FSW in Baltimore, MD, USA followed as part of an observational prospective cohort study between April 2016-Februrary 2018. The primary outcome was short-term interruptions of sex work (stopping sex work) over the past 3

Effects of Victimization and Violence on Suicidal Ideation and Behaviors Among Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Sexual minority youth (SMY) are at higher risk for victimization and suicide than are heterosexual youth (HY). Relatively little research has examined which types of victimization are most closely linked to suicide, which is necessary to develop targeted prevention interventions. The present study was conducted to address this deficit. METHODS: The data come from the 2011 Chicago Youth Risk Behavior Survey (n = 1,907). Structural equation modeling (SEM) in Mplus evaluated the direct, indirect, and total effects of sexual orientation on a latent indicator of suicidal ideation and beha

Global risk factor rankings: the importance of age-based health loss inequities caused by alcohol and other risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Achieving health equity is a priority of the World Health Organization; however, there is a scant amount of literature on this topic. As the underlying influences that determine health loss caused by risk factors are age-dependent, the aim of this paper is to examine how the risk factor rankings for health loss differ by age. METHODS: Rankings were based on data obtained from the 2010 Global Burden of Disease study. Health loss (as measured by Disability Adjusted Life Years lost) by risk factor was estimated using Population-Attributable Fractions, years of life lost due to premat

The spectrum and outcome of pregnant trauma patients in a metropolitan trauma service in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant patients involved in trauma pose unique diagnostic and treatment challenges as the physiological and anatomical changes associated with pregnancy, and the need to preserve foetal well-being, result in a number of nuances in the standard resuscitation algorithms. This clinical audit within a busy developing world trauma service describes the spectrum and outcome of pregnant trauma patients. METHODS: All pregnant patients presenting to the Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Hospital Complex following trauma were included in the study. Data were retrieved from the trauma regist

Association of childhood abuse with homeless women's social networks.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood abuse has been linked to negative sequelae for women later in life including drug and alcohol use and violence as victim or perpetrator and may also affect the development of women's social networks. Childhood abuse is prevalent among at-risk populations of women (such as the homeless) and thus may have a stronger impact on their social networks. We conducted a study to: (a) develop a typology of sheltered homeless women's social networks; (b) determine whether childhood abuse was associated with the social networks of sheltered homeless women; and (c) determine whether th
