The acetic acid test in evaluation of subclinical genital papillomavirus infection: a comparative study on penoscopy, histopathology, virology and scanning electron microscopy findings.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate colposcopic criteria in acetowhite lesions of the penis ("penoscopy") for the diagnosis of subclinical genitoanal papillomavirus infection (GPVI) compared with histopathological criteria of HPV involvement and to various hybridisation assays for HPV DNA detection, and to depict typical lesions by scanning electron microscopy. DESIGN: The study included 101 randomly selected male partners of females with known GPVI, or with penile symptoms such as itching, burning and dyspareunia who did not exhibit overt genital warts but appeared to be afflicted with acetowhite penile

Towards a unified approach for multiple myeloma care in Kenya - proceedings of the Inaugural Multiple Myeloma Congress.

The rising burden of multiple myeloma in Kenya has not been met by a commensurate effort for control. Patients and practitioners struggle with unavailability and unaffordability of diagnostics, drugs and stem cell transplant leading to presentation at advanced stages and under-treatment with increased morbidities and mortality. A concerted effort among stakeholders is urgently needed to develop strategies for myeloma control. The scarcity of providers also carries grave consequences for Kenyan patients. The Academic Model Providing Access To Healthcare (AMPATH) multiple myeloma program organiz

Human papillomavirus testing in the prevention of cervical cancer.

Strong evidence now supports the adoption of cervical cancer prevention strategies that explicitly focus on persistent infection with the causal agent, human papillomavirus (HPV). To inform an evidence-based transition to a new public health approach for cervical cancer screening, we summarize the natural history and cervical carcinogenicity of HPV and discuss the promise and uncertainties of currently available screening methods. New HPV infections acquired at any age are virtually always benign, but persistent infections with one of approximately 12 carcinogenic HPV types explain virtually a

Promoter methylation of p16(INK4A), hMLH1, and MGMT in liquid-based cervical cytology samples compared with clinicopathological findings and HPV presence.

Cervical cancer is a common cancer inflicting women worldwide. Even though, persistent infection with oncogenic Human Papillomavirus (HPV) types is considered the most important risk factor for cervical cancer development, less than 5% of women with HPV will eventually develop cervical cancer supporting that other molecular events, like methylation-dependent inactivation of tumor suppressor genes, may cocontribute in cervical carcinogenesis. We analyzed promoter methylation of three candidate genes (p16, MGMT, and hMLH1) in 403 liquid-based cytology samples. Methylation was commonly identified

Client preferences in noncommunicable diseases management in Australia: A scoping review.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCD) are the leading causes of mortality in Australia. Understanding clients' preferences is essential to implement effective care models that revitalize utilization of services. This study aims to review existing evidence on client preferences of service delivery among people with NCD in Australia. We followed PRISMA extension for scoping review. Articles conducted with discrete choice experiment were included. Clients with NCD in general or one of the five major diseases: cardiac diseases, diabetes, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and mental health disorders.

Epigenetic and Transcriptomic Regulation Landscape in HPV+ Cancers: Biological and Clinical Implications.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is an oncogenic virus that causes the highest number of viral-associated cancer cases and deaths worldwide, with more than 690,000 new cases per year and 342,000 deaths only for cervical cancer (CC). Although the incidence and mortality rates for CC are declining in countries where screening and vaccination programs have been implemented, other types of cancer in which HPV is involved, such as oropharyngeal cancer, are increasing, particularly in men. Mutational and transcriptional profiles of various HPV-associated neoplasms have been described, and accumulated evid

Molecular mechanisms of the preventable causes of cancer in the United States.

Annually, there are 1.6 million new cases of cancer and nearly 600,000 cancer deaths in the United States alone. The public health burden associated with these numbers has motivated enormous research efforts into understanding the root causes of cancer. These efforts have led to the recognition that between 40% and 45% of cancers are associated with preventable risk factors and, importantly, have identified specific molecular mechanisms by which these exposures modify human physiology to induce or promote cancer. The increasingly refined knowledge of these mechanisms, which we summarize here,

Iceland screens, treats, or prevents multiple myeloma (iStopMM): a population-based screening study for monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and randomized controlled trial of follow-up strategies.

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) precedes multiple myeloma (MM). Population-based screening for MGUS could identify candidates for early treatment in MM. Here we describe the Iceland Screens, Treats, or Prevents Multiple Myeloma study (iStopMM), the first population-based screening study for MGUS including a randomized trial of follow-up strategies. Icelandic residents born before 1976 were offered participation. Blood samples are collected alongside blood sampling in the Icelandic healthcare system. Participants with MGUS are randomized to three study arms. Arm 1 is n

Anal dysplasia screening: an evidence-based analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This review considered the role of the anal Pap test as a screening test for anal dysplasia in patients at high risk of anal SCC. The screening process is now thought to be improved with the addition of testing for the human papillomavirus (HPV) in high-risk populations. High-resolution anoscopy (a method to view the rectal area, using an anoscope, a lighted instrument inserted into the rectum) rather than routine anoscopy-guided biopsy, is also now considered to be the diagnostic standard. CLINICAL NEED: TARGET POPULATION AND CONDITION Anal cancer, like cervical cancer, is a membe

Familial aspects of fear of cancer recurrence: current insights and knowledge gaps.

Fear of cancer recurrence is fear or worry about cancer recurrence or progress. Fear of recurrence can impact patients' quality of life and wellbeing. Cancer survivors' families support them practically and emotionally, making them a vital supplement for official healthcare. Given the well-established important role of the family in dealing with cancer, we compiled the studies that examined the relationship between family-related factors and fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) among cancer survivors (CSs). One of the foremost studies in this field is the FCR model presented by Mellon and colleague

Screening for the prevention and early detection of cervical cancer: systematic reviews to inform an update to recommendations by the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care.

PURPOSE: To inform updated recommendations by the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care (Task Force) on screening in primary care for the prevention and early detection of cervical cancer in individuals with a cervix who are 15 years or older who have been sexually active and have no symptoms of cervical cancer. We systematically reviewed evidence from Very High Development Index countries of the following: screening effectiveness (focusing on ages to start and stop) and comparative effectiveness (strategies and intervals); comparative test accuracy (of comparisons without comparative

The Role of TRL7/8 Agonists in Cancer Therapy, with Special Emphasis on Hematologic Malignancies.

Toll-like receptors (TLR) belong to the pattern recognition receptors (PRR). TLR7 and the closely correlated TLR8 affiliate with toll-like receptors family, are located in endosomes. They recognize single-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules and synthetic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)/RNA analogs-oligoribonucleotides. TLRs are primarily expressed in hematopoietic cells. There is compiling evidence implying that TLRs also direct the formation of blood cellular components and make a contribution to the pathogenesis of certain hematopoietic malignancies. The latest research shows a positive ef

Cancer in pregnancy: FIGO Best practice advice and narrative review.

Cancer during pregnancy is relatively rare. The incidence is underestimated due to the lack of international registries covering both high-income and low- and middle-income countries, and is expected to rise with increasing maternal age and increasing global adoption of cell-free DNA testing for aneuploidy. Physiological changes during pregnancy often make the diagnosis challenging and delayed. Lack of experience and knowledge about this condition may also contribute to late diagnosis, suboptimal management, and occasionally inadvertent fetal and/or maternal harm. The principles of cancer mana

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for the prevention of cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death amongst females worldwide. Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is the key factor in cervical cancer development. HPV vaccines aim to prevent cancer by generating antibodies against HPV infection. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of HPV vaccines, in females and males, to prevent cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases, in standard (pairwise) and network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomised controlled trials. SEARCH METHODS: On 10 January 2022, we searched the Cochr
