Neural and Behavioral Correlates of Alcohol-Induced Aggression Under Provocation.

Although alcohol consumption is linked to increased aggression, its neural correlates have not directly been studied in humans so far. Based on a comprehensive neurobiological model of alcohol-induced aggression, we hypothesized that alcohol-induced aggression would go along with increased amygdala and ventral striatum reactivity and impaired functioning of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) under alcohol. We measured neural and behavioral correlates of alcohol-induced aggression in a provoking vs non-provoking condition with a variant of the Taylor aggression paradigm (TAP) allowing to differentiate

Cerebrospinal fluid inflammatory cytokines and aggression in personality disordered subjects.

BACKGROUND: Neurochemical studies have pointed to a modulatory role in human aggression for a variety of central neurotransmitters and neuromodulators such as cytokines. While animal studies of cytokines suggest an aggression-facilitating role for central cytokines, especially for interleukin-1β and other cytokines, no cerebrospinal fluid studies of cytokines have yet been reported in regard to human aggression. METHODS: Basal lumbar cerebrospinal fluid samples were obtained from 38 physically healthy subjects with DSM-5 Personality Disorder and assayed for cerebrospinal fluid interleukin-6 (

Empathic Accuracy and Aggression in Couples: Individual and Dyadic Links.

The authors examined links between intimate partner aggression and empathic accuracy-how accurately partners can read one another's emotions-during highly affective moments from couples' (N = 109) video recall of laboratory-based discussions of upsetting events. Less empathic accuracy between partners was generally related to higher levels of aggression by both partners. More specific patterns emerged based on the type of aggression and emotion being expressed. Women's poorer ability to read their partners' vulnerable and positive emotions was linked to both men's and women's greater physical

Decreased aggression and increased repetitive behavior in Pten haploinsufficient mice.

Aggression is an aspect of social behavior that can be elevated in some individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a concern for peers and caregivers. Mutations in Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), one of several ASD risk factors encoding negative regulators of the PI3K-Akt-mTOR pathway, have been reported in individuals with ASD and comorbid macrocephaly. We previously showed that a mouse model of Pten germline haploinsufficiency (Pten(+/-) ) has selective deficits, primarily in social behavior, along with broad overgrowth of the brain. Here, we further examine the social behavi

Relationship between psychopathy, aggression, anger, impulsivity, and intermittent explosive disorder.

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) in DSM-5 represents a disorder of recurrent, problematic, reactive (i.e., affective or impulsive), aggressive behavior that, over the lifetime, affects about 5-6% of individuals in the United States. While aggression is also observed in those with psychopathic personality, aggression in this context is frequently proactive rather than reactive, and neurobiological study suggests important differences between those with proactive aggression/psychopathy and those with reactive aggression. In this paper, we conducted two sets of analyses. First, a phenomenolo

Tourette syndrome is associated with insecure attachment and higher aggression.

This study explored the degree to which adult patients with Tourette syndrome (TS) exhibit particular attachment styles and the possible association between the underlying attachment dimensions and forms of aggression. Fifty-three TS patients (ages 17-72 years) and 54 matched healthy controls completed the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised Scale (ECR-R) and the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ). The data were analysed with ANOVA F-tests, t-tests, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. TS patients showed significantly higher scores in relationship anxiety ( p < 0.001) and relationship avoi

Dopamine receptor DRD3 codes for trait aggression as Mendelian recessive.

The dopamine receptor gene DRD3 and in particular the single nucleotide polymorphism Ser9Gly has been extensively investigated and found to have potential association with a wide variety of conditions. These include essential tremor, unipolar and bipolar depression, as well as a loose association with schizophrenia. Evaluation of (1) these known associations with DRD3, (2) the recent finding of Costas and colleagues that a haplotype containing Ser-9 is associated with protection from schizophrenia, and (3) an extant trait model of personality, leads to the hypothesis that an allele DRD3/Ser co

Overt and covert aggression in college women with bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the prevalence of overt and covert aggression in women with bulimia nervosa (BN) as well as the relationship between the severity of BN and the frequency of aggressive acts. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 20 female college students with BN and 20 control subjects completed self-report measures of aggressive behavior and eating disorder pathology. They also completed the Juvenile Health and Wellness Survey-76 to assess general risk taking and indices of sexual behavior and mental health. RESULTS: BN subjects reported higher levels of both overt and covert aggression (p <

Neural correlates of affect processing and aggression in methamphetamine dependence.

CONTEXT: Methamphetamine abuse is associated with high rates of aggression but few studies have addressed the contributing neurobiological factors. OBJECTIVE: To quantify aggression, investigate function in the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, and assess relationships between brain function and behavior in methamphetamine-dependent individuals. DESIGN: In a case-control study, aggression and brain activation were compared between methamphetamine-dependent and control participants. SETTING: Participants were recruited from the general community to an academic research center. PARTICIPANTS: T

Androgens modulate song effort and aggression in Neotropical singing mice.

Androgens are an important class of steroid hormones involved in modulating the expression and evolution of male secondary sex characters. Vocalizations used in the context of aggression and mate attraction are among the most elaborate and diverse androgen-dependent animal displays as reflected in a rich tradition of studies on bird song and anuran calls. Male Alston's singing mice (Scotinomys teguina) commonly emit trilled songs that appear to function in male-male aggression. In this study, we experimentally manipulated androgens in singing mice to assess their role in modulating aggression

[Burnout and victimisation: impact of inmates' aggression towards prison guards].

INTRODUCTION: Prison is typically considered as a dangerous setting partly because of promiscuity and violence, which leads to a whole series of suffering and frustration among prisoners. Due to their occupation, prison guards must ensure the safety of the inmates, their colleagues, as well as any other persons working in prison and in the prison setting. Thus, correctional guards are the "Bumper excitement" of prison violence and suffer from stressful and traumatic events. Indeed, inmates' sufferings and frustration are firstly expressed towards them because they share daily relationships wit

Childhood physical abuse, aggression, and suicide attempts among criminal offenders.

Childhood physical abuse (CPA) has numerous short and long-term negative effects. One of the most serious consequences of CPA is an increased risk for suicide attempts. Clarifying the mechanisms by which CPA increases risk for suicidal behavior may enhance preventive interventions. One potential mechanism is a tendency toward aggression. In a sample of 266 criminal offenders, ages 18-62, we examined the relationships among CPA, lifetime aggression, and suicide attempts and tested lifetime history of aggression as a mediator of the relationship between CPA and suicide attempts. Results indicate

Neural inputs of the hypothalamic "aggression area" in the rat.

A part of the mediobasal hypothalamus (known as hypothalamic attack area) plays a central role in the control of aggressive behavior as its electrical stimulation reliably and rapidly elicits biting attacks in cats and rodents. The efferent connections of this brain region were described in rats, but afferent pathways were not investigated so far. We injected the retrograde tracer cholera toxin B subunit into the mediobasal hypothalamus of male Wistar rats and studied the distribution of labeled cells by immunohistochemical method. The retrograde labeling outlined three continuous, distinct af

The Aggression Questionnaire for Spanish preadolescents and adolescents: AQ-PA.

We have already published the psychometric properties of our Spanish version of the Buss and Perry's Aggression Questionnaire adapted to young subjects (Personality and Individual Differences, 42, 1453-1465). The four-dimensional structure of the questionnaire was confirmed in each pre-adolescent and adolescent sample, although differences in the intercorrelations among factors between both groups of age were then observed. We publish now new evidences about its factorial validity in the whole group of pre-adolescent and adolescent children. We also report the positive correlations found betwe

Seasonality of three dimensions of mania: psychosis, aggression and suicidality.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the existence of a seasonal distribution of three dimensions of mania, psychosis, aggression and suicidality, during psychiatric hospitalizations, in a Brazilian sample, correlating these findings with local climatic variables. METHODS: Charts of 425 admissions of 269 ICD-10 manic patients, from 1996-2000 were reviewed for the occurrence of these symptom dimensions. Seasonality was assessed using Cosinor Analysis. When a harmonic seasonal distribution was not present, chi-square tests comparing the peak months with the rest of the year for each specific feature were

Gaps in pediatricians' advice to parents regarding early childhood aggression.

Persistent early childhood aggression is a strong predictor of violence later in life. To determine how well general pediatricians counsel parents regarding aggression management strategies, responses to open-ended questions and endorsements of specific aggression management strategies, among 27 pediatricians were evaluated. Sixteen (59%) screened regularly for aggression and 23 (85%) counseled (rather than referred) if there were parental concerns. Pediatricians were most likely to spontaneously recommend time-outs (85%) and verbal reprimands (78%) and much less likely to recommend other stra

Scoping workplace aggression in nursing: findings from an Australian study.

AIM: This paper reports a study of workplace aggression among nurses in Tasmania, Australia. There is international concern about a perceived rise in occupational violence as a major worldwide public health problem, with associated financial costs. BACKGROUND: There is reason to suspect that aggression towards nurses is increasing. For example, increased illicit drug use puts nurses at the sharp end in managing patients admitted with drug-related problems. Such people are often resistant to healthcare intervention, and often have associated disorders, including mental illness. Despite this in

Serum cholesterol concentrations and non-physical aggression in healthy adults.

Although physical aggression in humans and other primates appears to be negatively associated with total serum cholesterol (TSC) concentrations, the relationship between other forms of aggression and TSC is less clear. A plurality of studies have reported a positive association, some have reported no association, and a minority have reported a negative association. Some authors have speculated that the variability in findings is attributable to inconsistencies in the definitions and measurement of what has often been termed "verbal" aggression. Buss and Perry have developed the Aggression Ques

Optimal reproductive-skew models fail to predict aggression in wasps.

Optimal-skew models (OSMs) predict that cooperative breeding occurs as a result of dominants conceding reproductive benefits to subordinates, and that division of reproduction within groups reflects each cooperator's willingness and ability to contest aggressively for dominance. Polistine paper wasps are a leading model system for testing OSMs, and data on reproduction and aggression appear to support OSMs. These studies, however, measure aggression as a single rate rather than by the activity patterns of individuals. This leads to a potential error: if individuals are more likely to receive a
