Acne is a skin disease common in adolescents and increasingly common in the adult population. Iseolides A-C (1-3), three new glycosylated macrolides, were identified from the culture extract of Streptomyces sp. DC4-5 isolated from a stony coral Dendrophyllia. Extensive analysis of one- and two-dimensional NMR data, coupled with MS/MS analytical data, revealed that iseolides are new congeners of 36-membered macrolides, PM100117 and PM100118, previously reported from a marine-derived Streptomyces. Iseolides showed potent antifungal activity against a plant pathogen Glomerella cingulata and human pathogens Candida albicans and Trichophyton rubrum with MIC in the range of 0.19-6.25 μg/mL.

Marine isolates such as palytoxin (PTX) are of concern within the Caribbean region due to their toxicity. BACKGROUND: There is a deficiency in up-to-date soil-transmitted helminth (STH) prevalence data for many regions, including Oceania. This study investigated the prevalence of STH in two closely associated coral atoll communities in East Kwaio, Solomon Islands, reflective of many similar island communities throughout the Oceania region.
METHODS: An STH survey, using the Kato-Katz technique, was conducted on human subjects living on two coral atolls in the Eastern Solomon Islands. The capacity of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs to float in seawater was also evaluated by passive flotation.

Two new cembrane-type diterpenoids have been isolated from the 2-propanol extract of the sea pen Gyrophyllum sibogae collected in South Africa: 7,8-dihydroflabellatene A (1) and 7,8-dihydroflabellatene B (2). The inhibitory glycine receptor (GlyR) is a key mediator of synaptic signalling in spinal cord, brain stem, and higher centres of the central nervous system. We examined the glycinergic activity of sarcophine (SN), a marine terpenoid known for its various biological activities, and its trans-diol derivative (7S, 8R)-dihydroxy-deepoxysarcophine (DSN). SN was isolated from the Red Sea soft coral Sacrophyton glaucum, DSN was semisynthesized by hydrolysis of the epoxide ring. In cytotoxicity tests against HEK293 cells, SN and DSN had LD50 values of 29.3 ± 3.0 mM and 123.5 ± 13.0 mM, respectively.
