Digital death and posthumous data: a glocal, relational perspective.

Persistent digital presence now routinely outlives biological death through memorialized profiles, algorithmic "memories," AI-mediated avatars, or biobank reanalysis. This perspective argues that decisions about such posthumous data-including postmortem genomic data-should be grounded in a glocally situated, relational view of personhood and practice, rather than in one-size-fits-all, individual-only rules. A small shared vocabulary is first proposed for use across disciplines: digital afterlife, digital immortality, posthumous lifespan, digital remains, and digital death. Digital death is tre

Diffuse midline glioma invasion and metastasis rely on cell-autonomous signaling.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse midline gliomas (DMG) are pediatric tumors with negligible 2-year survival after diagnosis characterized by their ability to infiltrate the central nervous system. In the hope of controlling the local growth and slowing the disease, all patients receive radiotherapy. However, distant progression occurs frequently in DMG patients. Current clues as to what causes tumor infiltration circle mainly around the tumor microenvironment, but there are currently no known determinants to predict the degree of invasiveness. METHODS: In this study, we use patient-derived glioma stem cel

Using Immersive Virtual Reality to Enhance Social Interaction Among Older Adults: A Cross-Site Investigation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Virtual reality (VR) applications are increasingly being targeted toward older adults as a means to maintain physical and cognitive skills and to connect with others, especially during the coronavirus disease 2019 era. Our knowledge about how older adults interact with VR is limited, however, since this is an emerging area and the related research literature is still rather slim. The current study focused specifically on older adults' reactions to a social-VR environment, examining participant's views about the possibility of meaningful interactions in this format, t

Protocol for chronic hepatitis B virus infection mouse model development by patient-derived orthotopic xenografts.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, more than 250 million people worldwide are chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus, and almost 800.000 patients die annually of mediated liver disorders. Therefore, adequate biological test systems are needed that could fully simulate the course of chronic hepatitis B virus infection, including in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS: In this study, we will assess the effectiveness of existing protocols for isolation and cultivation of primary cells derived from patients with hepatocellular carcinoma in terms of the yi

An innovative protocol for the artificial speech-directed, contactless administration of laboratory-based comprehensive cognitive assessments: PAAD-2 trial management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in suspending in-person human subject research across most institutions in the US. Our extensive cognitive assessment for a phase-2 clinical trial, Physical Activity and Alzheimer's Disease-2 (PAAD-2), was also paused in March 2020. It was important to identify strategies to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission during our testing, which initially required substantial human speech and close person-to-person contact for test directions and instant feedback on paper/pencil tests. Given current understanding of the COVID-19 transmission, we dramatically adjuste

[Improving Quality of Life in Patients with Refractory Schizophrenia After Virtual Reality-assisted Therapy: A Content Analysis].

Objectives Schizophrenia, particularly treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), is one of the most disabling psychiatric disorders in terms of adverse effects on the quality of life (QOL) of patients. Subjective QOL has become a particularly crucial target that should be improved with treatment, since improved QOL may lead to recovery in patients with schizophrenia. However, there is little evidence on the efficacy of recommended psychosocial interventions on non-symptomatic measures such as QOL. In this regard, the treatment of schizophrenia can be enhanced if, in addition to the treatment of

SOMA: a preventive health governance framework for adaptive, consumer-facing digital health guidance.

This paper introduces SOMA, a conceptual preventive health governance framework for adaptive, consumer-facing digital health guidance, designed to support everyday preventive health self-governance. Non-communicable and lifestyle-sensitive chronic diseases account for the majority of global mortality, yet existing consumer-facing digital health tools rarely provide coherent, governed preventive guidance that integrates multimodal personal health data, scientific evidence, user-defined goals, real-world feasibility, relational support, and explicit safety constraints within a unified architectu

Effectiveness of a co-adapted virtual discharge education app on disease knowledge and health behaviours in patients following heart attack: a multicentre, randomised controlled trial protocol in Sydney, Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Active self-management by patients following acute coronary syndrome (ACS) can reduce recurrent events. Patient education for transitioning from hospital to home promotes effective self-management but can be limited in the acute setting due to time and resource pressures. Patients from ethnic minority and immigrant backgrounds face additional language, cultural and health literacy barriers to receiving patient education. Self-administered virtual patient education presents an innovative solution to these challenges. This study aims to evaluate a co-adapted, virtual avatar nurse-g

Virtual Reality-Based Running Exposure to Target the Acute Urge to Be Physically Active in Anorexia Nervosa: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe and complex eating disorder (ED), whose incidence has increased following the COVID-19 pandemic, straining specialized healthcare systems worldwide. Although patients often resort to compulsive exercise as a means of weight control, prolonged fasting intensifies the urge to move, leading to increased motor restlessness. Despite progress in understanding AN, interventions often overlook the crucial role that the urge to be physically active plays in reinforcing the ED itself. This case series tested the feasibility of a Virtual Reality-based Runni

Measuring Female Gaming: Gamer Profile, Predictors, Prevalence, and Characteristics From Psychological and Gender Perspectives.

Research investigating female gaming is relatively scarce, and past research has demonstrated that men are more likely to be problematic gamers. Few studies have focused on female gamers in community samples, and those that have been published have mainly collected qualitative data in Europe. There is case study evidence suggesting clinicians are increasingly treating problem female gamers. The aim of this study is threefold: (i) to establish an international female gamer profile, (ii) to determine predictors associated with perceived internet gaming disorder (IGD), and (iii) to identify those

The virtual "CaRMS Social": useful tool or awkward gathering?

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the annual residency match (CaRMS Match) process to be conducted entirely virtually. Pre-pandemic, Canadian emergency medicine (EM) programs hosted a social event in conjunction with their interviews. Since 2021, all EM programs have offered a virtual social event to candidates participating in the virtual interview. Our study sought to explore the perceived impact of the virtual social event on candidates' program rankings, the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the virtual social, and how candidates felt virtual socials could be improved in the

Sensor-Based Movement Quality Assessment and Biofeedback for Rehabilitation Exercise: A Scoping Review with Implications for Home-Based and Remote Rehabilitation.

Background/Objectives: Sensor-based movement assessment is increasingly used to quantify movement execution quality and support feedback-guided rehabilitation exercise, particularly in home-based and remote rehabilitation contexts. However, exercise adherence, movement execution quality, and rehabilitation progress remain difficult to monitor continuously and objectively outside direct therapist supervision. This scoping review aimed to map the current applications of sensor-based biofeedback and movement-quality assessment systems for rehabilitation exercise and to identify evidence gaps. Met

Comparing the rate of immunotherapy treatment change due to toxicity by sex.

BACKGROUND: Immuno-oncology therapy (IO) is associated with a variety of treatment-related toxicities. However, the impact of toxicity on the treatment discontinuation rate between males and females is unknown. We hypothesized that immune-related adverse events would lead to more frequent treatment changes in females since autoimmune diseases occur more frequently in females. AIMS: Our aim was to determine if there was a difference in the rate of immunotherapy treatment change due to toxicity between males and females. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Oncology Research Information Exchange Network A

Emotional reactivity and prosocial behaviour in response to witnessing social exclusion in adolescents with eating disorders and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Prosocial behaviour can promote positive social interactions and it is a key skill in adolescence. People with emotional problems or psychiatric disorders, such as people with eating disorders might have impairments in prosocial behaviour, due to broader documented difficulties in underlying processes (e.g., mentalizing). METHODS: The aim of this study was to examine prosocial behaviour in adolescents with eating disorders compared to healthy controls, using a computerised behavioural task. Adolescents (N = 123) including patients with eating disorders (n = 61) and healthy adolesc

Interventional nephrology and vascular access practice: A perspective from South and Southeast Asia.

South and Southeast Asia is the most populated, heterogeneous part of the world. The Association of Vascular Access and InTerventionAl Renal physicians (AVATAR Foundation), India, gathered trends on epidemiology and Interventional Nephrology (IN) for this region. The countries were divided as upper-middle- and higher-income countries as Group-1 and lower and lower-middle-income countries as Group-2. Forty-three percent and 70% patients in the Group 1 and 2 countries had unplanned hemodialysis (HD) initiation. Among the incident HD patients, the dominant Vascular Access (VA) was non-tunneled ce

Diaphyseal and Metaphyseal Modeling Defects-Clinical Findings and Identification of WRAP53 Deficiency in Craniometadiaphyseal Dysplasia.

Background: Diaphyseal and metaphyseal modeling defects lead to severe changes in bone mass and shape, which are common features in osteoporosis that linked to non-vertebral fractures. Original mechanism of diaphyseal and metaphyseal modeling defects has proved elusive. Studying rare syndromes can elucidate mechanisms of common disorders and identify potential therapeutic targets. Methods: We evaluated a family pedigree with craniometadiaphyseal dysplasia (CRMDD, OMIM 269300), a genetic disorder that is characterized by cortical-bone thinning, limb deformity, and absent of normal metaphyseal f

EEG based evaluation of stereoscopic 3D displays for viewer discomfort.

BACKGROUND: Consumer preference is rapidly changing from 2D to 3D movies due to the sensational effects of 3D scenes, like those in Avatar and The Hobbit. Two 3D viewing technologies are available: active shutter glasses and passive polarized glasses. However, there are consistent reports of discomfort while viewing in 3D mode where the discomfort may refer to dizziness, headaches, nausea or simply not being able to see in 3D continuously. METHODS: In this paper, we propose a theory that 3D technology which projects the two images (required for 3D perception) alternatively, cannot provide tru

Virtual reality as a tool for evaluation of repetitive rhythmic movements in the elderly and Parkinson's disease patients.

This work presents an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) system to evaluate, and potentially treat, the alterations in rhythmic hand movements seen in Parkinson's disease (PD) and the elderly (EC), by comparison with healthy young controls (YC). The system integrates the subjects into a VR environment by means of a Head Mounted Display, such that subjects perceive themselves in a virtual world consisting of a table within a room. In this experiment, subjects are presented in 1(st) person perspective, so that the avatar reproduces finger tapping movements performed by the subjects. The task, known
