The high-molecular weight multimer form of adiponectin is a useful marker of polycystic ovary syndrome in Bahraini Arab women.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: We tested if decreased total and high molecular weight (HMW)-adiponectin, and altered HMW/total adiponectin ratio (HMWR) constitute reliable markers of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) among Bahraini Arab women. METHODS: Case-control study involving 122 Bahraini Arab women with PCOS and 89 ethnically-matched control women. PCOS was evaluated according to 2003 Rotterdam criteria. Total and HMW-adiponectin were measured by ELISA. RESULTS: Compared to controls, women with PCOS had significantly reduced plasma HMW-adiponectin, and HMWR, more so than total adiponectin. Logistic

2024 Scholars' Research Symposium Abstract: Metacognitive Analysis of Simulation-Based Education Identifies a Gap in Healthcare Education.

INTRODUCTION: Simulation has become an integral part of healthcare education. Studies demonstrate rapid knowledge and skill acquisition with the use of simulation and rapid knowledge degradation if it is not further reinforced. Effect of simulation on metacognitive processes, or the ability to understand one's own knowledge, is not well-investigated yet. The University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine in the U.S. and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Bahrain campus, collaborated on combining the best simulation-based and team-based learning (TBL) practices to investigate team dy

Six-year follow up of imatinib therapy for newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia in Iranian patients.

BACKGROUND: Summary measures of health are essential in making estimates of health status that are comparable across time and place. They can be used for assessing the performance of health systems, informing effective policy making, and monitoring the progress of nations toward achievement of sustainable development goals. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015) provides disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and healthy life expectancy (HALE) as main summary measures of health. We assessed the trends of health status in Iran and 15 neighboring countrie

Genetic and molecular architecture of multiple sclerosis in gulf cooperation council populations: A scoping review and regional precision-neurology perspective.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is increasingly recognized across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, where rising disease burden intersects with distinctive ancestry, family structure, consanguinity patterns, vitamin D deficiency, rapid environmental transition, and an unevenly developed genetic literature. Most global MS genetic models have been derived from European-ancestry datasets and may not fully capture susceptibility patterns, allele frequencies, familial structure, or gene-environment interactions in Arabian Gulf populations. A regionally focused synthesis is therefore nee

HIV incidence and impact of interventions among female sex workers and their clients in the Middle East and north Africa: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of HIV infection among female sex workers and their clients in the Middle East and north Africa is not well known. We aimed to assess HIV incidence, the contribution of heterosexual sex work networks to these numbers, and the effect of interventions by use of mathematical modelling. METHODS: In this modelling study, we developed a novel, individual-based model to simulate HIV epidemic dynamics in heterosexual sex work networks. We applied this model to 12 countries in the Middle East and north Africa that had sufficient data to estimate incidence in 2020 and the impa

Type 1 diabetes is associated with higher plasma levels of biomarkers of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation.

IntroductionType 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with increased risk of dementias and other neurodegenerative diseases. Plasma biomarkers of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation hold utility in risk prediction and diagnosis of neurodegenerative disease and other neuropathology, but there remains a paucity of data in the T1D population. This study quantified plasma levels of biomarkers of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation [phosphorylated tau-181 (pTau-181), total tau (Tau), amyloid beta 42/amyloid beta 40 (Aβ42/40), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and neurofilament light chain (
