BACKGROUND: Though research finds that youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) have high rates of substance use, which can lead to numerous long-term negative health effects, less is known about both risk and protective factors for substance use. Moreover, even less is known about whether these factors differ for lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) youth compared to non-LGB youth. In the current study, we compared risk and protective factors for binge drinking, marijuana use, and illicit drug use (i.e. substance use) among heterosexual and sexual minority YEH.
METHODS: The sample included 322 young

BACKGROUND: Studies of the adverse neurobehavioral effects of maternal alcohol consumption on the fetus have been largely confined to the postnatal period, after exposure to alcohol has finished. This study explored the brain function of the fetus, at the time of exposure to alcohol, to examine its effect on information processing and stability of performance.
METHODS: Five groups of fetuses, defined by maternal alcohol consumption patterns, were examined: control (no alcohol); moderate (5 to 10 units/wk either drunk evenly across the week or as a binge, in 2 to 3 days); heavy (20+ units/wk d

BACKGROUND: Poor retention in HIV care is associated with worse clinical outcomes and increased HIV transmission. We examined the relationship between self-reported alcohol use, a potentially modifiable behavior, and retention.
METHODS: A total of 9694 people living with HIV from 7 participating US HIV clinical sites (the Centers for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems) contributed 23,225 observations from January 2011 to June 2014. The retention outcomes were (1) Institute of Medicine (IOM) retention: 2 visits within 1 year at least 90 days apart and (2) visit adherence [pro

INTRODUCTION: In an effort to promote social distancing as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many jurisdictions altered policies surrounding alcohol delivery, newly allowing both on-premises (i.e., from restaurants) and off-premises (i.e., from liquor stores) to deliver alcohol directly to consumers in many places. However, it is unknown how these changing delivery policies impact alcohol use among youth and young adults (YYA), especially sexual and gender minority youth and young adults (SGMY) population.
METHODS: Using alcohol use data from a national, cross-sectional study of youth and

Over the last four decades, chronic ethanol feeding studies in rodents using either ad libitum feeding or intragastric infusion models have significantly enhanced our understanding of the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Recently, we developed a chronic plus binge alcohol feeding model in mice that is similar to the drinking patterns of many alcoholic hepatitis patients: a history of chronic drinking and recent excessive alcohol consumption. Chronic+binge ethanol feeding synergistically induced steatosis, liver injury, and neutrophil infiltration in mice, which may be useful for

Ovarian-derived estrogen can signal non-canonically at membrane-associated receptors in the brain to rapidly regulate neuronal function. Early alcohol drinking confers greater risk for alcohol use disorder in women than men, and binge alcohol drinking is correlated with high estrogen levels, but a causal role for estrogen in driving alcohol drinking has not been established. We found that female mice displayed greater binge alcohol drinking and reduced avoidance when estrogen was high during the estrous cycle than when it was low. The pro-drinking, but not anxiolytic, effect of high endogenous

INTRODUCTION: Excessive alcohol consumption, particularly binge drinking, is associated with cognitive impairments, emotional dysregulation and an increased vulnerability to alcohol use disorders. Emerging evidence suggests that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, modulates neuroinflammatory processes and influences dopaminergic signaling involved in reward-related behaviors. However, its acute effect on binge-like consumption remains poorly understood. The present study investigated the effects of acute oral administration of DHA-rich fish oil on binge-like drin

BACKGROUND: This cohort study examines the possible association between maternal alcohol intake, including binge drinking, during pregnancy, and the subsequent risk of having a child with an isolated congenital heart defect and, more specifically, with the isolated form of ventricular septal defect (VSD) or of an atrial septal defect (ASD).
METHODS: Participants were 80,346 pregnant women who were enrolled into the Danish National Birth Cohort in 1996-2002 and gave birth to a live-born singleton without any chromosome anomalies. Twice during pregnancy these women were asked about their intake

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Although, in the laboratory, most acute adverse effects of cocaine are dose-dependent and alcohol potentiates some of these effects, there are few observational studies, and scarce awareness that the risk of acute cocaine intoxication (ACI) can increase as the amounts of cocaine and alcohol consumed increase. Our objectives were to assess if the risk of ACI increases with the level cocaine use, both in chronic and binge use; and also to determine whether it increases when a cocaine binge is combined with binge drinking or with regular excessive drinking.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-dependent individuals exhibit dissociable event-related potential (ERP) responses to alcohol-related cues. Fewer studies have examined if similar effects can be found in non-dependent young adults who binge drink.
OBJECTIVES: To delineate the neurocognitive correlates of inhibiting behavioral responses to alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage cues in social drinkers with differing numbers of binge episodes and instances of intoxication.
METHODS: ERP data were acquired while 50 participants performed a Go/No-go paradigm consisting of shapes and pictures of alcoholic and non

BACKGROUND: There are no population studies estimating the burden of alcoholic cerebellar degeneration (ACD). We aimed to assess prevalence and correlates of ACD among chronic alcohol drinkers living in rural Ecuador.
METHODS: Characteristics of alcohol intake were evaluated in community-dwelling men aged ≥40years enrolled in the Atahualpa Project. Cerebellar dysfunction evaluation used the Brief Ataxia Rating Scale (BARS). Association between alcohol intake and the BARS was assessed in generalized linear models adjusted for relevant confounders. In subjects who had CT, the relationship betwe

BACKGROUND: Multiracial American adults have the highest rates of binge drinking and illicit drug use of all racial groups, yet little is known about the risk and promotive factors that contribute to their substance use.
OBJECTIVES: This study examines how individual factors (i.e., shifting racial expressions, perceived racial ambiguity, creating third space, self-esteem, depression) and family cohesion relate to substance use among 574 Multiracial young adults in the United States (Mage = 19.87).
RESULTS: Findings suggested that Multiracial young adults who reported higher scores on perceiv

This open study on 614 alcohol-dependent patients from 51 centres in Belgium over 24 weeks collected data on the sociodemographic, medical and drug safety profiles and the type of psychosocial support most commonly associated with acamprosate. Psychiatric problems (34%) and gastro-intestinal ulcers (15%) were the most frequent other medical diagnoses. As supportive treatment, 48% of patients received individual psychotherapy, 25% group therapy, 16% relapse prevention and coping skills, 9% brief intervention and 2% family therapy. Fifteen (29%) centres used only 1 form of supportive treatment,

Extensive research has documented altered emotion processing in binge drinkers. Genetic risks contribute to problem drinking; however, it remains unclear how genetic risks for alcohol misuse affect behavioral and brain responses to negative emotions. We curated data from the Human Connectome Project and identified 97 binge (69 men) and 379 demographically-matched non-binge (142 men) drinkers performing an emotion task during brain imaging. Alcohol use severity was quantified by the first principal component (PC1) identified of principal component analysis of 15 drinking measures. Polygenic ris
