Bioaccumulation of mercury is equal between sexes but different by age in seabird (Sula leucogaster) population from southeast coast of Brazil.

Since several seabird species have sexual size dimorphism, in which one sex is larger than the other, and may consume bigger prey, this size difference may affect the contamination concentration in the seabird's tissues depending on their sex and age. In this study, mercury contamination was investigated in brown booby (Sula leucogaster) adults and juveniles during their breeding season at the Santana Archipelago, on the southeast coast of Brazil. Two hypotheses were evaluated: 1. As females consume larger prey than males due to the reverse sexual dimorphism, higher total mercury (THg) and met

Investigating the effects of a sub-lethal metal mixture of Cu, Zn and Cd on bioaccumulation and ionoregulation in common carp, Cyprinus carpio.

The aquatic environment is continuously under threat because it is the final receptor and sink of waste streams. The development of industry, mining activities and agriculture gave rise to an increase in metal pollution in the aquatic system. Thus a wide occurrence of metal mixtures exists in the aquatic environment. The assessment of mixture stress remains a challenge considering that we can not predict the toxicity of a mixture on the basis of single compounds. Therefore the analysis of the effects of environmentally relevant waterborne mixtures is needed to improve our understanding of the

[Bioaccumulation of Heavy Metals in Twigs and Leaves of Abies fabri at Mount Gongga in China: A Comparison Study Between 1999 and 2014].

The rapid economy growth led to the environmental carrying capacity reaching the maximum level.Given that the time changing trend of heavy metal pollution in the remote forest ecosystems has rarely been reported, we reported the differences of Pb, Hg, Cd, As, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn and bioaccumulation in twigs and leaves of fir(Abies fabri) between samples collected in 1999 and 2014 at the Mt. Gongga, which was located at eastern Tibet Plateau. Our results suggested that the concentrations of Pb, Hg, As, Cd, Mn and Cu in the samples collected in 1999 were significantly higher than those collected in 2

Molecular Characterization of Voltage-Gated Sodium Channels and Their Relations with Paralytic Shellfish Toxin Bioaccumulation in the Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas.

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) bind to voltage-gated sodium channels (Nav) and block conduction of action potential in excitable cells. This study aimed to (i) characterize Nav sequences in Crassostrea gigas and (ii) investigate a putative relation between Nav and PST-bioaccumulation in oysters. The phylogenetic analysis highlighted two types of Nav in C. gigas: a Nav1 (CgNav1) and a Nav2 (CgNav2) with sequence properties of sodium-selective and sodium/calcium-selective channels, respectively. Three alternative splice transcripts of CgNav1 named A, B and C, were characterized. The expression

Influence of dietary carbon on mercury bioaccumulation in streams of the Adirondack Mountains of New York and the Coastal Plain of South Carolina, USA.

We studied lower food webs in streams of two mercury-sensitive regions to determine whether variations in consumer foraging strategy and resultant dietary carbon signatures accounted for observed within-site and among-site variations in consumer mercury concentration. We collected macroinvertebrates (primary consumers and predators) and selected forage fishes from three sites in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, and three sites in the Coastal Plain of South Carolina, for analysis of mercury (Hg) and stable isotopes of carbon (δ(13)C) and nitrogen (δ(15)N). Among primary consumers, scrapers

Monitoring bioaccumulation and toxic effects of hexachlorobenzene using the polyurethane foam unit method in the microbial communities of the Fuhe River, Wuhan.

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) is a chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon that was widely used for seed dressing in prevention of fungal growth on crops, and also as a component of fireworks, ammunition, and synthetic rubbers. Because of its resistance to degradation and mobility, HCB is widely distributed throughout the environment and is accumulated through food chains in different ecosystems. In this study, a preliminary investigation was carried out on the bioaccumulation and the toxic effects of HCB in the microbial (protozoan in particular) communities in the Fuhe River, Wuhan, a water body receivin

Determination of metal and organometal trophic bioaccumulation in the benthic macrofauna of the Adour estuary coastal zone (SW France, Bay of Biscay).

A multidisciplinary approach has been adopted in order to investigate the bioaccumulation of metals and organometals in macrobenthic populations. A complete method coupling a sampling strategy and classification of benthic organisms with a performant analytical procedure for the analysis of both metals and organometals has been developed. A single sample preparation method using a TMAH extraction and species specific isotope dilution makes it possible to analyse metals and organometals in the same extract, which is especially interesting for situations where only a limited amount of sample is

Calcium oxide nanoparticles ameliorate cadmium toxicity in alfalfa seedlings by depriving its bioaccumulation, enhancing photosystem II functionality and antioxidant gene expression.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic and carcinogenic pollutant that poses significant risks to living organisms and the environment, as it is absorbed by the plant roots and accumulates in different parts of crop during its production. A promising sustainable strategy to counteract these threats to use calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaO-NPs) as soil supplements in fodder crops. This approach has shown notable morpho-physiological and biochemical improvements under metal toxicity conditions. However, the specific mechanisms driving Cd tolerance, particularly at physio-biochemical level and antioxidant

Passive samplers provide a better prediction of PAH bioaccumulation in earthworms and plant roots than exhaustive, mild solvent, and cyclodextrin extractions.

A number of extraction methods have been developed to assess polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) bioavailability in soils. As these methods are rarely tested in a comparative manner, against different test organisms, and using field-contaminated soils, it is unclear which method gives the most accurate measure of the actual soil ecosystem exposure. In this study, PAH bioavailability was assessed in ten field-contaminated soils by using exhaustive acetone/hexane extractions, mild solvent (butanol) extractions, cyclodextrin extractions, and two passive sampling methods; solid phase micro extra

Dietary exposure to inorganic mercury and methylmercury in Dreissena polymorpha: tissue- and form-specific bioaccumulation, multi-omics and oxidative stress responses.

Methylmercury (MeHg), despite its low aqueous concentration, poses significant ecotoxicological risks in aquatic food webs. However, its dietary impacts on freshwater biota at environmentally relevant concentrations remain poorly understood. This study investigated bioaccumulation and molecular toxicity pathways in Dreissena polymorpha using transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and oxidative stress biomarkers following dietary exposure to inorganic Hg (IHg) and MeHg. Data revealed tissue-specific bioaccumulation patterns: the digestive gland, primary site of metal detoxification, accumul

Bioaccumulation of Total Mercury (THg) in Freshwater Fish-Perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) and rudd (Scardinius erythrophtalmus L.)-Human Health Risk Assessment.

Fish have the capacity to bioaccumulate metals such as mercury through the food web, posing potential health risks to aquatic ecosystems and humans. This study aimed to assess total mercury (THg) concentrations in different tissues of freshwater fish and evaluate the potential risk for consumers. Perch (Perca fluviatilis) and rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus), representing different trophic levels, were collected from Koronowo Reservoir and Lake Wierzchucińskie Duże in summer and autumn. THg accumulation followed the order: muscle > liver > gills, with significant differences observed between

Long-Term Exposure to Neonicotinoid Insecticide Acetamiprid at Environmentally Relevant Concentrations Impairs Endocrine Functions in Zebrafish: Bioaccumulation, Feminization, and Transgenerational Effects.

Neonicotinoid insecticides have attracted worldwide attention due to their ubiquitous occurrence and detrimental effects on aquatic organisms, yet their impacts on fish reproduction during long-term exposure remain unknown. Here, zebrafish (F0) were exposed to a neonicotinoid, acetamiprid, at 0.19-1637 μg/L for 154 d. Accumulation and biotransformation of acetamiprid were observed in adult fish, and the parent compound and its metabolite (acetamiprid-N-desmethyl) were transferred to their offspring. Acetamiprid caused slight survival reduction and significant feminization in F0 fish even at th

Bioaccumulation of mercury along continuous fauna trophic levels in the Yellow River Estuary and adjacent sea indicated by nitrogen stable isotopes.

Mercury (Hg), and its organic forms, are some of the most hazardous elements, with strong toxicity, persistence, and biological accumulation in marine organisms. Hg accumulation in continuous trophic levels (TL) in marine food chains remains unclear. In this study, individual invertebrate and fish samples collected from the Yellow River Estuary adjacent sea were grouped into continuous TL ranges, and the bioaccumulations of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were analyzed. The trophic magnification factor in invertebrates and fish was 1.40 and 1.72 for THg, and 2.56 and 2.17 for MeHg, ind

Renal bioaccumulation of trace elements in urban and rural Sri Lankan populations: A preliminary study based on post mortem tissue analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental pollution, especially by toxic trace elements, is a global health concern. Heavy metals such as Cadmium (Cd), Arsenic (As) and Lead (Pb) are associated with numerous disorders and are considered by some as an aetiological factor for the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKDu1) epidemic in Sri Lanka. This study explores patterns of bioaccumulation of six trace elements in kidneys obtained during forensic autopsies from urban and rural regions in Sri Lanka. METHODS: Kidney samples obtained from one urban district (n = 13) and three rural districts (n = 18) were lyophilized, mi

Relative comparison of tissue specific bioaccumulation and radiation dose estimation in marine and freshwater bivalve molluscs following exposure to phosphorus-32.

With respect to environmental protection, understanding radionuclide bioconcentration is necessary to relate exposure to radiation dose and hence to biological responses. Few studies are available on tissue specific accumulation of short-lived radionuclides in aquatic invertebrates. Short-lived radionuclides such as 32Phosphorus (32P), although occurring in small quantities in the environment, are capable of concentrating in the biota, especially if they are chronically exposed. In this study, we firstly compared tissue specific bioaccumulation and release (depuration) of 32P in adult marine (

Biokinetic Modeling of Cd Bioaccumulation from Water, Diet and Sediment in a Marine Benthic Goby: A Triple Stable Isotope Tracing Technique.

Aquatic animals are often simultaneously exposed to metals through multiple routes in the natural environment. This study explored a triple stable isotope tracing method to quantify simultaneous cadmium (Cd) uptake biokinetics by yellow stripe goby from water (traced by 110Cd), sediment (traced by 111Cd), and diet (traced by 113Cd) when the fish were exposed to Cd for 24 h. The simultaneous uptake of Cd from multiple routes during 4 weeks was then predicted by the modified biokinetic model. The results demonstrated that the uptake rate constant of waterborne 110Cd, sediment-associated 111Cd, a

A novel β-cyclodextrin-based chiral stationary phase for enantioseparation and evaluation of paclobutrazol enantioselective degradation and bioaccumulation in a soil-earthworm system.

A novel cyclodextrin-derived chiral stationary phase (CMHDC) was synthesized by coupling 3-chloro-4-methylphenylcarbamate-mono-6-hexamethylenediamine-β-cyclodextrin to the surface of silica gel via a urea linkage, and was then packed into a column. The chiral separation capability of the CMHDC column was evaluated, and molecular docking was used to explore the chiral recognition mechanism. The column showed good chiral recognition ability for various drugs. The separation mechanism likely depended on differences in hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions, and host-guest inclusion effects. B

Bioaccumulation of trace elements by Leach's storm-petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous) in the North and South Atlantic Ocean during the non-breeding period.

Trace elements occur naturally in the environment, but anthropogenic activities can amplify their release, increasing exposure and bioaccumulation in marine predators such as seabirds. Mercury (Hg) in liver, blood, and eggs of Leach's storm-petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous), has been investigated as a short-term exposure indicator of hatching and fledging success. However, chronic Hg intake and exposure to other trace elements during the non-breeding period remain poorly understood. This study assessed geographic variation in trace element exposure and relative trophic position in Leach's storm-
