Microglia regulate sleep and thermoregulatory stability.

Sleep fragmentation disrupts physiological homeostasis, including thermoregulation, metabolism, and immune signaling; however, cellular mechanisms that stabilize core body temperature and sleep architecture during disrupted sleep remain poorly understood. Microglia are the resident immune cells of the central nervous system and play a central role in integrating neuroimmune signaling with hypothalamic regulation of thermoregulation and sleep-wake control. We tested the hypothesis that microglia are required to maintain both thermoregulatory and sleep stability during physiological sleep and wh

[Design and application of heating device and temperature control system for dialysis fluid bag in continuous renal replacement therapy].

In the process of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), various factors such as the temperature of replacement fluid, the flow of fluid and the circulation of blood in cardiopulmonary bypass, lead to the temperature of the blood injected back into the body is often lower than normal. It leads to the decrease of body temperature and the occurrence of hypothermia, which can be life-threatening in severe cases. In clinical practice, medical staff mostly reduces the occurrence of hypothermia in patients with CRRT by means of the heating device of the machine, the heating of the liquid tempe

Core-Temperature Responses at the 3-km World Aquatics Open-Water Swimming Masters Championships in Doha 2024.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize core-temperature (Tc) responses of swimmers competing at the 2024 3-km World Aquatics Masters Open Water Swimming Championships. METHODS: Within a cross-sectional observational study design, swimmers (n = 48 [23 male, 25 female]) ingested a telemetric Tc pill 4 hours before their race. Water temperatures were 20.9 °C (male; mean wet-bulb-globe temperature 25.9 °C) and 20.5 °C (female; mean wet-bulb-globe temperature: 25.4 °C). Linear mixed models determined differences between males and females for race-start, mean in-race, and peak Tc. Random coeffic

Cooling the neck region during exercise in the heat.

CONTEXT: Cooling the neck region can improve the ability to exercise in a hot environment. It might improve performance by dampening the perceived level of thermal strain, allowing individuals to override inhibitory signals. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the enhanced ability to exercise in a hot environment observed when cooling the neck region occurs because of dampening the perceived level of thermal strain experienced and the subsequent overriding of inhibitory signals. DESIGN: Crossover study. SETTING: Walk-in environmental chamber. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Eight endurance-t

The effect of pre-cooling intensity on cooling efficiency and exercise performance.

Although pre-cooling is known to enhance exercise performance, the optimal cooling intensity is unknown. We hypothesized that mild cooling opposed to strong cooling circumvents skin vasoconstriction and thermogenesis, and thus improves cooling efficiency reflected in improved time to exhaustion. Eight males undertook three randomized trials, consisting of a pre-cooling and an exercise session. During the pre-cooling, performed in a room of 24.6 +/- 0.4 degrees C and 24 +/- 6% relative humidity, participants received either 45 min of mild cooling using an evaporative cooling shirt or strong coo

The poikilothermic hypothesis of sepsis.

Accumulating evidence suggests that fever and hypothermia in sepsis may result from a state of minimally regulated body temperature, resembling the thermoregulatory patterns observed in cold-blooded animals (poikilothermia). Increasing data indicate that pharmacological agents capable of inducing poikilothermia, could offer therapeutic benefits, including enhanced survival and faster recovery in septic patients. This narrative review examines both experimental and clinical evidence supporting the poikilothermic hypothesis of sepsis and explores its potential clinical implications. We propose t

Enhanced thermoregulation abilities of shortfin mako sharks as the key adaptive significance of regional endothermy in fishes.

Some large, wide-ranging teleosts and elasmobranchs are converged to have regional endothermy, retaining metabolic heat via vascular countercurrent heat exchangers. Yet, their adaptive significance remains debated. While previous studies proposed potential benefits of elevated body temperature, enhanced controllability of body temperature enabled by heat exchangers may also be important. Some endothermic teleosts (e.g. bigeye tuna) alter rates of body temperature change depending on dive phases to maximize foraging time in deep, cold waters while minimizing recovery time in shallow, warm water

Revisiting concepts of thermal physiology: understanding negative feedback and set-point in mammals, birds, and lizards.

The thermoregulatory system of homeothermic endotherms operates to attain thermal equilibrium, that is no net loss or gain of heat, where possible, under a thermal challenge, and not to attain a set-point or any other target body temperature. The concept of a set-point in homeothermic temperature regulation has been widely misinterpreted, resulting in such confusion that some thermoregulation specialists have recommended that it be abandoned. But the set-point concept has enjoyed a resurgence in a different domain, lizard microclimate selection. We review the principles of thermoregulation in

Impact of bioclimatic factors on physio-biochemical and molecular response of slow-growing poultry reared in tropics.

Most of the climatic studies projected on heat stress have considered heat extremes, but not the humidity. Hence, this work was carried out to evaluate thermotolerance, production performance, physio-biochemical and immunological response of slow-growing poultry towards various temperature-humidity levels in coastal climate. A total of 240 straight run CARI-Debendra birds were reared in three groups based on temperature-humidity indices (THI > 80, = 75-80 and < 75). Significant difference (P < 0.01) in rectal and body surface temperatures was observed among treatment groups. Lowest body weight

Thermoregulation and age.

The thermoregulatory functions may vary with age. Thermosensitivity is active in neonates and children; both heat production and heat loss effector mechanisms are functional but easily exhaustable. Proportional and lasting defense against thermal challenges is difficult, and both hypothermia and hyperthermia may easily develop. Febrile or hypothermic responses to infections or endotoxin can also develop, together with confusion. In small children febrile convulsions may be dangerous. In old age the resting body temperature may be lower than in young adults. Further, thermosensitivity decreases

Thermoregulation. Base mechanisms and hyperthermia.

Metabolic HP is extremely high during exercise in horses. Thermoregulation in horses is primarily dependent on evaporative heat loss from sweating in particular. Under thermoneutral conditions, these mechanisms are sufficient to allow horses to perform high-intensity exercise for long periods. Under thermally stressful conditions, particularly in high ambient humidity, the efficiency of evaporative heat loss mechanisms is compromised and may result in horses developing hyperthermia. Early recognition and vigorous treatment are essential to limit the consequences of heat stress in horses. Metic

Central control of body temperature. A review.

The control of body temperature takes place in the central nervous system at different levels, from the spinal cord to the upper parts of the brain. Experimental studies have shown that heat-producing muscular shivering is stimulated only when the spinal cord becomes cooler. The regulation of other components participating in the control of thermoregulation proceeds in hierarchical order so that the coordination takes place ultimately in the hypothalamus, mainly in the preoptic region, and at the same time temperature regulation is coupled with other autonomic functions such as control of food

Metabolic heat production of neonatal calves during hypothermia and recovery.

Metabolic heat production and rectal temperature were measured in 19 newborn calves (41.8 +/- 3.7 kg) during hypothermia and recovery when four different means of assistance were provided. Hypothermia of 30 degrees C rectal temperature was induced by immersion in 18 degrees C water. Calves were rewarmed in a 20 to 25 degree C air environment where thermal assistance was provided by added thermal insulation or by supplemental heat from infrared lamps. Other calves were rewarmed by immersion in warm water (38 degrees C), with or without a 40-ml drench of 20% ethanol in water. Resting (prehypothe

Body temperatures of selected amphibian and reptile species.

Ectothermic vertebrates are a diverse group of animals that rely on external sources to maintain a preferred body temperature. Amphibians and reptiles have a preferred optimal temperature zone that allows for optimal biological function. Physiologic processes in ectotherms are influenced by temperature; these animals have capabilities in which they make use of behavioral and physiologic mechanisms to thermoregulate. Core body, ambient air, body surface, and surface/water temperatures were obtained from six ectothermic species including one anuran, two snakes, two turtles, and one alligator. Cl

Aerobic performance in rats subjected to incremental-speed running exercise: A multiple regression analysis study emphasizing thermoregulation-related variables.

Single-variable analyses have limited ability to explain complex phenomena such as the regulation of prolonged physical (aerobic) performance. Our study aimed to identify predictors of performance in rats subjected to incremental-speed running exercise. Notably, most variables assessed were associated with rats' thermoregulation. We extracted data from 355 records obtained in 216 adult Wistar rats. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to identify the predictive power of eight variables. The distance traveled, a performance index, was the dependent variable. The indep

The effect of forced-air warming in the cesarean section on maternal hypothermia, shivering, and thermal comfort: A randomized controlled trial.

This trial was carried out to investigate the effect of forced air warming in various body areas of women on hypothermia during cesarean delivery. The patients in the study groups (n = 76) were assigned to the full-body warming group, upper-extremity warming group, lower-extremity warming group, and control groups. The intervention groups received forced-air warming 30 min before the surgery and continued until 30 min after surgery. The incidence of hypothermia was significantly higher in the control group than in the other groups at the 60th minute of the operation (p < 0.01). The interventio

Influence of passive lower-body heating on muscle metabolic perturbation and high-intensity exercise tolerance in humans.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of heat stress on the dynamics of muscle metabolic perturbation during high-intensity exercise. Seven healthy males completed single-legged knee-extensor exercise until the limit of tolerance on two separate occasions. In a randomized order the subjects underwent 40 min of lower-body immersion in warm water at 42°C prior to exercise (HOT) or received no prior thermal manipulation (CON). Following the intervention, muscle metabolism was measured at rest and throughout exercise using (31)P-MRS. The tolerable duration of high-intens

Effect of mild hypothermia on the coefficient of oxygen delivery in hypoxemic dogs.

Hypothermia is one of therapeutic options in patients with severe acute respiratory failure. This study was designed to determine the optimum core temperature during hypoxemia by analyzing oxygen delivery (DO2) and consumption (VO2). Six dogs were ventilated using a mixed gas of N2 and air (fractional concn of O2 in inspired gas = 0.12) with total muscle relaxation under general anesthesia. Hypoxia (arterial PO2 approximately 35 Torr) was maintained during the experimental period. The core temperature was reduced progressively from 37 to 30 degrees C by surface cooling.
