Retrospective Analysis of the Akin Osteotomy.

Hallux abductovalgus is one of the most common deformities addressed by foot and ankle surgeons. Surgically, it can be approached using a wide variety of procedures. After performing the first metatarsal osteotomy, the final step is often to realign the great toe in a rectus position. This is performed with an osteotomy of the proximal phalanx. The Akin osteotomy is a medially based closing wedge osteotomy of the proximal phalanx. When executing the osteotomy, the goal is not only to correct abduction, but also to keep the lateral cortex intact, which allows it to act as an additional point of

Minimally Invasive Chevron Akin Osteotomy for Hallux Valgus Correction.

BACKGROUND: The minimally invasive chevron Akin osteotomy technique is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic mild to moderate hallux valgus deformities. The aim of the procedure is to restore alignment of the first ray while minimizing soft-tissue disruption. DESCRIPTION: Prior to the procedure, radiographs are utilized to characterize the patient's hallux valgus deformity by determining the hallux valgus angle and intermetatarsal angle. The metatarsal rotation is also assessed via the lateral round sign and sesamoid view. To begin, a stab incision is made over the lateral aspect of the

Correction method for moderate and severe degrees of hallux valgus associated with transfer metatarsalgia.

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV) is a common foot deformity that manifests with increasing age, especially in women. The associated foot pain causes impaired gait and decreases quality of life. Moderate and severe HV is a deformity that is characterized by the involvement of lesser rays and requires complex surgical treatment. In this study, we attempted to develop a procedure for this condition. AIM: To analyse the treatment results of patients who underwent simultaneous surgical correction of all parts of a static forefoot deformity. METHODS: We conducted a prospective clinical trial between

The Lapidus procedure: a prospective cohort outcome study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple reports are found in the literature about the surgical treatment of hallux valgus deformities. Few, however, are prospective outcome studies. The purpose of this study was to prospectively look at the functional outcome of patients with moderate and severe hallux valgus deformities (intermetatarsal angle of more than 14 degrees and a hallux valgus angle of more than 30 degrees) after the Lapidus procedure. METHODS: Indication for surgery and inclusion into the study was failure of nonoperative management for metatarsus primus varus and painful hallux valgus deformities. D

Hallux valgus in males--part 1: demographics, etiology, and comparative radiology.

BACKGROUND: The high frequency of hallux valgus deformities in females is well known and has been widely reported in the literature. This finding tends to obscure the importance and the characteristic details of hallux valgus deformities in males. The severity of the deformity, its onset at an earlier age, and its inheritability seem to be more frequent in males, but there are no reports in the literature to substantiate these concepts. The purpose of this study was to analyze these questions in regard to males with hallux valgus. METHODS: The records and plain radiographs of 31 males (53 fee

Hypermobility of the first ray.

Hypermobility of the first ray is one of the causative components in common foot problems (such as hallux valgus) with a large intermetatarsal angle and metatarsus primus varus. Although not always associated with hallux valgus, hypermobility is a predisposing factor for this deformity, especially in conjunction with extrinsic factors, such as disruption of the plantar first metatarsal cuneiform ligament and tendon-muscle imbalance. Hypermobility is also frequently found in adolescents with hallux valgus, especially when associated with a large intermetatarsal angle. Motion at the first metata

[Correlation between fourth brachymetatarsia and hallux valgus].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between fourth brachymetatarsia and hallux valgus, and to provide evidence-based support for clinical decision-making. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 68 patients (89 feet) with congenital fourth brachymetatarsia treated between August 2021 and November 2025. All patients were female, aged 18-44 years (mean, 28.1 years). The hallux valgus angle (HVA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA), and shortening length of the fourth metatarsal were measured on standardized weight-bearing anteroposterior foot X-ray films. Hallux valgus-related complic

Functional Outcomes of Talectomy in Pediatric Feet.

BACKGROUND: Historically, talectomy has been predominantly performed to operatively treat severely rigid equinovarus feet. A limited number of investigators have studied functional outcomes in pediatric patients posttalectomy. We aimed to assess the outcomes of pediatric patients undergoing talectomy using the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) score and a subjective survey of patients' and their caregivers' satisfaction. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study that included 31 patients with nonidiopathic severely rigid talipes equinovarus, in a single center, using

VEXAS Syndrome in a Patient with Myeloproliferative Neoplasia.

VEXAS syndrome stands for vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic syndrome. The syndrome is a combined hematological and rheumatological condition caused by a somatic mutation in the UBA1. There is an association between VEXAS and hematological conditions such as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), monoclonal gammopathies of uncertain conditions (MGUS), multiple myeloma (MM), and monoclonal B-cell lymphoproliferative conditions. There are not many descriptions of patients having VEXAS in combination with myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN). With this article, we want to present a ca

Social conditions impact functional outcome in patients with hand osteoarthritis: the low-income hand osteoarthritis (LIHOA) cohort.

BACKGROUND: Hand osteoarthritis (HOA) is a highly prevalent disease that may be impacted by social inequalities. Few studies in HOA are from underdeveloped regions. We intend to contribute to fill this gap presenting clinical characteristics of our low-income HOA cohort (LIHOA). METHODS: Data from 119 patients with a HOA diagnosis fulfilling ACR criteria seen between August 2019 and May 2023 in Fortaleza/Brazil. Evaluations included pain (VAS, visual analogue scale), X-ray (KL, Kellgren-Lawrence), grip and pinch strength (KgF), Cochin hand functional scale (CHFS), FIHOA, and SF-12 scores. Soc

Surgical options for salvage of end-stage hallux rigidus.

When approaching patients with a painful first MTP joint that has failed conservative therapy and first-line surgical treatments (cheilectomy or minor bunion procedures), the surgeon should stratify these patients based upon diagnosis, age, and activity level (Fig. 13). For the young, active patient, an arthrodesis is the gold standard, and the primary predictors of clinical and radiographic success are proper fusion angle alignment and maintenance or restoration of length. The method of fusion site preparation and the choice of fixation have not been found to be significant factors in achievi

[Scarf osteotomy for the treatment of forefoot deformity].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The outcome of surgical treatment in hallux valgus is sometimes unsatisfactory for both the patient and the surgeon. The valgus position of the big toe in the metatarsophalangeal joint is associated with a deviation to varus of the first metatarsal, resulting in the space between the first and second metatarsals called the intermetatarsal (IMT) angle. In most patients the angle is between 10 and 20 degrees. These patients were indicated for scarf osteotomy as this method has been reported to achieve good outcomes. The results are compared with the relevant literature data

How does academia respond to the burden of infectious and parasitic disease?

BackgroundAcademic research is one of the main avenues through which humans can fight the threat of infectious diseases. However, there have been concerns regarding whether the academic system has provided sufficient efforts to fight infectious diseases we potentially face. Answering these questions could contribute to evidence-based recommendations for setting research priorities and third-mission policies.MethodsWith a focus on one of the most common categories of communicable diseases, infectious and parasitic diseases (IPDs), we searched Web of Science for articles and reviews relevant to
