Mixed mating system and intraspecific variation in lizard pollination of Withania frutescens (L.) Pauquy.

Plant reproductive strategies are particularly relevant on islands, where environmental constraints usually shape ecological dynamics. In this sense, the role of lizards (Lacertilia) as flower visitors and potential pollinators has been increasingly recognized. However, lizards may also consume plant reproductive tissues, potentially influenced by lizard intraspecific traits such as age and sex. This study aims to investigate, for the first time, the reproductive biology of the rare Mediterranean shrub Withania frutescens (L.) Pauquy (Solanaceae), and to assess the role of the Balearic lizard

A field test of the dilution effect hypothesis in four avian multi-host pathogens.

The Dilution Effect Hypothesis (DEH) argues that greater biodiversity lowers the risk of disease and reduces the rates of pathogen transmission since more diverse communities harbour fewer competent hosts for any given pathogen, thereby reducing host exposure to the pathogen. DEH is expected to operate most intensely in vector-borne pathogens and when species-rich communities are not associated with increased host density. Overall, dilution will occur if greater species diversity leads to a lower contact rate between infected vectors and susceptible hosts, and between infected hosts and suscep

Male responsibility and maternal morbidity: a cross-sectional study in two Nigerian states.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria continues to have high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality. This is partly associated with lack of adequate obstetric care, partly with high risks in pregnancy, including heavy work. We examined actionable risk factors and underlying determinants at community level in Bauchi and Cross River States of Nigeria, including several related to male responsibility in pregnancy. METHOD: In 2009, field teams visited a stratified (urban/rural) last stage random sample of 180 enumeration areas drawn from the most recent censuses in each of Bauchi and Cross River states. A struc

Deafblindness in Aotearoa, New Zealand: Prevalence and Equity Challenges From a Cross-Sectional Census Analysis.

Deafblindness or difficulty seeing and hearing even with correction or hearing aids affects an estimated 7.4% (about 295 000) of New Zealanders, with prevalence rising sharply among older adults. Analysis of 2023 Census data using the Washington Group Short Set (WGSS) highlights not only the scale of this issue but also its inequitable distribution: gender-diverse people, Māori, Pacific peoples, and rural communities experience higher rates and earlier onset of sensory difficulties. However, the WGSS's Western, individualistic framing often undercounts deafblindness in Indigenous and collectiv

Health, Disability, and Economic Inactivity Following a Diagnosis of a Severe Mental Illness: Cohort Study of Electronic Health Records Linked at the Individual-Level, to Census from England.

BACKGROUND: The association of social and clinical indicators with employment, disability, and health outcomes among individuals with severe mental illnesses (SMI) remains unclear. Existing evidence primarily comes from smaller cohort studies limited by shorter follow-up and high attrition, or registry-based research, which lacks information on important social determinants. STUDY DESIGN: We utilized a novel data linkage consisting of clinical records of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia-spectrum or bipolar disorders from the South London and Maudsley Mental Health Trust, linked at the

U.S. Federal and State Medicaid Spending: Health Policy Patterns by Political Party Leadership and Census Demographics.

Medicaid is a vital public health program, serving over 70 million Americans from many backgrounds. Understanding how Medicaid spending varies by political leadership and demographic factors can inform policy discussions and advocacy efforts. We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive analysis of state Medicaid spending using publicly available data. Our findings show that individuals identifying as White comprise the largest single racial group of Medicaid beneficiaries both nationally and in most states. While the 2020 Census Diversity Index correlated strongly with total Medicaid spending,

Measuring birth outcomes in New York State using a multidimensional approach.

OBJECTIVE: Poorer birth outcomes in the United States and New York State (NYS) remain a significant public health concern. The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of common and unique demographic, socioeconomic, and health services predictors on low birth weight (LBW), moderately LBW, very low birth weight (VLBW), and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) in NYS counties and to recommend policies that address unique differences at the county level. METHODS: Secondary data were collected for each of the 62 counties in NYS. Using a multidimensional approach, common and unique factors

Trends in pneumococcal meningitis hospitalizations following the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) was introduced in 2010 in the U.S. and its impact on pneumococcal meningitis (PM) is unknown. We assessed the impact of PCV13 on PM hospitalization rates 4years after the vaccine was introduced. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of the National Inpatient Sample from 2008-2014. Patients with an ICD-9-CM code for PM (320.1) were identified and rates calculated using US Census data as the denominator. Data weights were used to derive national estimates. We examined three time periods: 2008-2009 (late post-PCV7), 2010 (tran

Examining sociodemographic risk factors for Chlamydia trachomatis infection: a population-based cohort study.

AIM: Chlamydia trachomatis is the most prevalent bacterial sexually transmitted infection in developed nations and is an important public health concern. We aimed to assess the factors associated with testing and positivity of C. trachomatis in a large population. METHODS: A retrospective study of a large Canadian health region was undertaken using 2011 census and laboratory data. Demographic and socioeconomic data from the national household survey were linked to microbiologic data for C. trachomatis. Multivariable generalized estimating equation models were constructed to examine relative r

Methods for retrospective geocoding in population studies: the Jackson Heart Study.

The increasing use of geographic information systems (GIS) in epidemiological population studies requires careful attention to the methods employed in accomplishing geocoding and creating a GIS. Studies have provided limited details, hampering the ability to assess validity of spatial data. The purpose of this paper is to describe the multiphase geocoding methods used to retrospectively create a GIS in the Jackson Heart Study (JHS). We used baseline data from 5,302 participants enrolled in the JHS between 2000 and 2004 in a multiphase process to accomplish geocoding2 years after participant enr

Socioeconomic risk factors for breast cancer: distinguishing individual- and community-level effects.

BACKGROUND: Women are at higher risk of breast cancer if they have higher socioeconomic status (SES) or live in higher SES or urban communities. We examined whether women living in such communities remained at greater risk of breast cancer after controlling for individual education and other known individual-level risk factors. METHODS: Data were from a population-based, breast cancer case-control study conducted in Wisconsin from 1988 to 1995 (n = 14,667). Data on community SES and urbanicity come from the 1990 census, measured at the census tract and zip code levels. We evaluated relationsh

Are air quality perception and PM2.5 exposure differently associated with cardiovascular and respiratory disease mortality in Brussels? Findings from a census-based study.

BACKGROUND: There is ample evidence that air pollution increases mortality risk, but most studies are based on modelled estimates of air pollution, while the subjective perception of air quality is scarcely assessed. We aimed to compare the effects of objective and subjective exposure to air pollution on cardiorespiratory mortality in Brussels, Belgium. METHODS: Data consisted of the 2001 Belgian census linked to registry-based mortality data for the follow-up period 2001-2014. We included individuals aged >30 years of age residing in Brussels at baseline (2001). Air pollution exposure was as

Mortality differences according to living arrangements.

BACKGROUND: Research has revealed mortality differences between marital status groups in different societies and different periods of time. Due to the increase in consensual unions, living alone and other changes in living arrangements, it is necessary to apply a more detailed classification of living arrangements that incorporates partnership situation and household composition. METHODS: We analyse mortality by cause-of-death in the total Finnish population aged 30 or over in 1996-2000. The linked register dataset includes 15.7 million person-years and 210,139 deaths. RESULTS: In the workin

Estimating micro area behavioural risk factor prevalence from large population-based surveys: a full Bayesian approach.

BACKGROUND: An important public health goal is to decrease the prevalence of key behavioural risk factors, such as tobacco use and obesity. Survey information is often available at the regional level, but heterogeneity within large geographic regions cannot be assessed. Advanced spatial analysis techniques are demonstrated to produce sensible micro area estimates of behavioural risk factors that enable identification of areas with high prevalence. METHODS: A spatial Bayesian hierarchical model was used to estimate the micro area prevalence of current smoking and excess bodyweight for the Erie
