An in situ reactive zone approach using calcium peroxide for the remediation of benzene and chlorobenzene in groundwater: A field study.

There is a gap in understanding the different contributions of biodegradation and free radical oxidation using calcium peroxide (CaO2) for the remediation of mixed contaminants of benzene and chlorobenzene in groundwater. In this study, the remedial efficiency and mechanisms of benzene and chlorobenzene co-contaminants using CaO2 were explored by an integrated approach of field study and laboratory validation. It was found that in the field demonstration program, the radius of influence for each injection point using Geoprobe direct-push was larger than the designed value of 0.75 m in the reac

Efficacy and safety of cenobamate-based combination therapy in drug-resistant epilepsy: Secondary analysis by mechanisms of action of concomitant antiseizure medications.

INTRODUCTION: In a secondary analysis of a cohort of 475 adults with drug-resistant epilepsy treated with adjunctive cenobamate, we assessed whether treatment outcomes were influenced by concomitant antiseizure medication class and cenobamate dose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Concomitant antiseizure medications (ASMs) were grouped as sodium channel blockers (SCBs), SV2A ligands, valproate, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, or GABA analogs. Efficacy and safety outcomes were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression, adjusting for confounders. RESULTS: Baseline use of valproate was associated wi

The Nitrite Transporter Facilitates Biofilm Formation via Suppression of Nitrite Reductase and Is a New Antibiofilm Target in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Biofilm-forming bacteria, including the Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa, cause multiple types of chronic infections and are responsible for serious health burdens in humans, animals, and plants. Nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to induce biofilm dispersal via triggering a reduction in cyclic-di-GMP levels in a variety of bacteria. However, how NO, at homeostatic levels, also facilitates biofilm formation is unknown. Here, we found that complestatin, a structural analog of vancomycin isolated from Streptomyces, inhibits P. aeruginosa biofilm formation by upregulating NO production via nitr

QSAR models based on quantum topological molecular similarity.

A new method called quantum topological molecular similarity (QTMS) was fairly recently proposed [J. Chem. Inf. Comp. Sc., 41, 2001, 764] to construct a variety of medicinal, ecological and physical organic QSAR/QSPRs. QTMS method uses quantum chemical topology (QCT) to define electronic descriptors drawn from modern ab initio wave functions of geometry-optimised molecules. It was shown that the current abundance of computing power can be utilised to inject realistic descriptors into QSAR/QSPRs. In this article we study seven datasets of medicinal interest : the dissociation constants (pK(a))

Seizure-free days as a clinical outcome measure of reduced epilepsy burden: 5-year outcomes with cenobamate treatment.

BACKGROUND: Sustained seizure freedom without intolerable adverse events is the main goal of epilepsy treatment, but may be challenging to achieve for some patients, particularly following the failure of multiple anti-seizure medications (ASMs). A majority of days without seizures is another important clinical outcome that can lead to meaningful improvement in quality of life. The objective of this post-hoc analysis was to evaluate the percentage of seizure-free days by responder groups during the open-label extension (OLE) of study C017 with a focus on patients who achieved near-seizure freed

[Detection of biohazardous materials in water upon the characteristics of fluorescent sensor Frex].

Luminescent bacteria have attracted more and more attention in recent years as an effective mean for biological toxicity of water environment monitoring. First of all, fluorescent protein Frex was correctly expressed in Escherichia coli, and then the effect of toxic substances on microbial metabolism in the water was monitored through the determination of the changes in the fluorescence intensity in bacteria caused by the change of NADH level in the bacteria. Then the effects of culture temperature, inducing time and the final concentration of inductor isopropyl beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside (I

Fabrication and photoelectrocatalytic properties of nanocrystalline monoclinic BiVO4 thin-film electrode.

Monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) thin film was fabricated on indium-tin oxide glass from an amorphous heteronuclear complex via dip-coating. After annealation at 400, 500, and 600 degrees C, the thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The BiVO4 particles on the ITO glass surface had a monoclinic structure. The UV-Visible diffuse reflection spectra showed the BiVO4 thin film had photoabsorption properties, with a band gap around 2.5 eV. In addition, the thin film showed hi

A previously unrecognized step in pentachlorophenol degradation in Sphingobium chlorophenolicum is catalyzed by tetrachlorobenzoquinone reductase (PcpD).

The first step in the pentachlorophenol (PCP) degradation pathway in Sphingobium chlorophenolicum has been believed for more than a decade to be conversion of PCP to tetrachlorohydroquinone. We show here that PCP is actually converted to tetrachlorobenzoquinone, which is subsequently reduced to tetrachlorohydroquinone by PcpD, a protein that had previously been suggested to be a PCP hydroxylase reductase. pcpD is immediately downstream of pcpB, the gene encoding PCP hydroxylase (PCP monooxygenase). Expression of PcpD is induced in the presence of PCP. A mutant strain lacking functional PcpD ha

Early sedation-related adverse events with the cenobamate-clobazam combination in drug-resistant epilepsy: real-world preliminary observations.

BACKGROUND: Cenobamate is increasingly used as adjunctive treatment in adults with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. In clinical practice, the combination with clobazam is common and sedation-related adverse events (SRAEs) have been reported. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-centre analysis of adult patients with drug-resistant epilepsy treated with cenobamate between January and September 2025. Clinical data, concomitant antiseizure medications, and adverse events were collected during routine follow-up. SRAEs occurring within three months of cenobamate initiation were classified as

The aquaporin-4 inhibitor AER-271 blocks acute cerebral edema and improves early outcome in a pediatric model of asphyxial cardiac arrest.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral edema after cardiac arrest (CA) is associated with increased mortality and unfavorable outcome in children and adults. Aquaporin-4 mediates cerebral water movement and its absence in models of ischemia improves outcome. We investigated early and selective pharmacologic inhibition of aquaporin-4 in a clinically relevant asphyxial CA model in immature rats in a threshold CA insult that produces primarily cytotoxic edema in the absence of blood-brain barrier permeability. METHODS: Postnatal day 16-18 Sprague-Dawley rats were studied in our established 9-min asphyxial CA mode
