Daily expression of two circadian clock genes in compound eyes of Helicoverpa armigera: evidence for peripheral tissue circadian timing.

Circadian clock genes in peripheral tissues usually play an important role in regulating the circadian rhythms. Light is the most important environmental signal for synchronizing endogenous rhythms with the daily light-dark cycle, and compound eyes are known as the principal circadian photoreceptor for photic entrainment in most moths. However, there is little evidence for circadian timing in compound eyes. In the current study, we isolated the timeless gene, designated Ha-tim (GenBank accession number: KM233162), from the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera. Ha-tim and period (Ha-per) showed

Centrally mediated ejaculatory response via sympathetic outflow in rats: role of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptors in paraventricular nucleus.

Ejaculation is mediated by a spinal generator, which integrates inputs related to the sexual activity and coordinates sympathetic, parasympathetic, and motor outflow. Previous clinical studies indicate that primary premature ejaculation is related to the hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. In this study, we explored the roles of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptors in paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) on ejaculatory responses and its potential mechanism in the rats. We found that microinjection of 0.20 nmol NMDA into the PVN reduced the latency of intromission

MALE REPRODUCTIVE PHYSIOLOGY AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION IN THE MAGELLANIC PENGUIN (SPHENISCUS MAGELLANICUS) USING CHILLED-STORED SEMEN.

Research was performed to increase our understanding of male Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) reproductive biology and to develop artificial insemination (AI) technology to assist with maintaining the species' genetic diversity. Seminal traits were characterized from seven males with noncontaminated ejaculates (n = 123) displaying high in vitro motion parameters, membrane integrity, and morphology. Seven females were maintained in nest sites that permitted visual, auditory, and tactile contact with their paired male but not copulation for 18.3 ± 2.4 days before egg lay. After cloac

Evidence of female sex pheromones and characterization of the cuticular lipids of unfed, adult male versus female blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis.

Copulation in Ixodes scapularis involves physical contact between the male and female (on or off the host), male mounting of the female, insertion/maintenance of the male chelicerae in the female genital pore (initiates spermatophore production), and the transfer of the spermatophore by the male into the female genital pore. Bioassays determined that male mounting behavior/chelicerae insertion required direct contact with the female likely requiring non-volatile chemical cues with no evidence of a female volatile sex pheromone to attract males. Unfed virgin adult females and replete mated adul

The antiepileptic primidone impairs male rat sexual behavior.

Many antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) produce sexual impairments. Of commonly prescribed AEDs, primidone produces the greatest impairments. Here we examined the effects of primidone on male rat sexual behavior. Sexually-experienced male rats received administration of either vehicle or primidone. After baseline measures were obtained, the effects of daily primidone treatment on home cage sexual performance were assessed three times over the course of 14 days. Motor activity and sucrose preference were also assessed during this time period. Results indicate that primidone impaired copulation but not

FMRFamide-like neuropeptides and mechanosensory touch receptor neurons regulate male sexual turning behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Caenorhabditis elegans male mating provides a powerful model to study the relationship between the nervous system, genes, and innate sexual behaviors. Male mating is the most complex behavior exhibited by the nematode C. elegans and involves the steps of response, backing, turning, vulva location, spicule insertion, and sperm transfer. Because neuropeptides are important neural regulators of many complex animal behaviors, we explored the function of the FMRFamide-like neuropeptide (flp) gene family in regulating male copulation. We found that peptidergic signaling mediated by FMRF-amide like n

Role of glutamate receptors in the ventromedial hypothalamus in the regulation of female rat sexual behaviors I. Behavioral effects of glutamate and its selective receptor agonists AMPA, NMDA and kainate.

Bilateral infusions of glutamate or kainate to the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) have been shown previously to produce a rapid inhibition of lordosis in estrogen-primed female rats induced by manual flank stimulation. The present study examined whether glutamate or selective ionotrophic glutamate receptor agonists can disrupt appetitive and consummatory sexual behaviors following bilateral infusions to the VMH of females during copulation with male rats. Ovariectomized, sexually experienced female rats were implanted bilaterally with guide cannulae aimed at the ventrolateral VMH. After recov

Behavioural and morphological effects of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone and oestradiol-17 beta in the prepubertally castrated boar.

Three groups of 5 prepubertally castrated boars received twice weekly subcutaneous injections from 16 to 28 weeks of age of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone propionate (1 mg/kg), oestradiol-17 beta dipropionate (0.1 mg/kg), or a combination of the two steroids. The pigs were tested each week for sexual behaviour with an oestrogen-treated ovariectomized gilt. 5 alpha-Dihydrotestosterone did not induce copulatory behaviour whereas oestradiol initiated mounting, although this behaviour was not maintained. However, the combined hormonal treatment induced the full pattern of copulation, including ejacul

Trypanosoma vivax displays a clonal population structure.

African animal trypanosomiasis, or Nagana, is a debilitating and economically costly disease with a major impact on animal health in sub-Saharan Africa. Trypanosoma vivax, one of the principal trypanosome species responsible for the disease, infects a wide host range including cattle, goats, horses and donkeys and is transmitted both cyclically by tsetse flies and mechanically by other biting flies, resulting in a distribution covering large swathes of South America and much of sub-Saharan Africa. While there is evidence for mating in some of the related trypanosome species, Trypanosoma brucei

Ovarian hormones modulate social recognition in female rats.

The effects of estradiol and progesterone on social recognition were evaluated in a habituation-dishabituation procedure. Ovariectomized female rats were either given 18 microg/kg of estradiol benzoate followed by progesterone, 1 mg/rat, 48 h later or oil. The test consisted of 4 consecutive exposures to a juvenile rat and a final exposure to a novel juvenile. Although the time spent investigating the juvenile was reduced after repeated exposure in both groups, the reduction was larger in the group treated with ovarian hormones. When exposed to a novel juvenile, both groups displayed enhanced

Imbalance of predator and prey armament: geographic clines in phenotypic interface and natural selection.

The escalation of defensive/offensive arms is ubiquitous in prey-predator evolutionary interactions. However, there may be a geographically varying imbalance in the armaments of participating species that affects the outcome of local interactions. In a system involving the Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica) and its obligate seed predator, the camellia weevil (Curculio camelliae), we investigated the geographic variation in physical defensive/offensive traits and that in natural selection on the plant's defense among 17 populations over a 700-km-wide area in Japan. The sizes of the plant def

Excitation of oxytocin cells in the hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus by electrical stimulation of the dorsal penile nerve and tactile stimulation of the penis in the rat.

In urethane-anaesthetized male rats, electrical stimulation of the dorsal penile nerve (DPN) excited 29 of 48 (60%) oxytocin cells in the contralateral supraoptic nucleus, whereas only 5 of 28 (18%) vasopressin cells were excited by the stimulation. The stimulus applied to the ipsilateral DPN to the recorded neurone also excited a similar proportion of oxytocin cells (25 of 43; 58%). Tactile stimulation of the glans penis excited 7 of 12 (58%) oxytocin cells, whereas the same stimulation excited only 3 of 16 (19%) vasopressin cells. The results suggest that sensory information arising from the

Inflammation in the bovine female reproductive tract.

Inflammation of the reproductive tract of a cow occurs when the physical and functional barriers to contamination are breached or specific infection occurs. Commonly, contamination occurs at parturition and to a lesser extent at estrus. Uterine contamination following calving is common, but most healthy cows are able to clear the uterus of bacteria in the first 2 to 3 wk after calving. Persistent infections are more likely to be caused by Actinomyces pyogenes. Specific venereal infections tend to be more host-adapted and produce a lower grade inflammation. Nonspecific bacterial contamination o

Analysis of the hormonal control of female sexual behavior and the preovulatory LH surge in the ewe: roles of quantity of estradiol and duration of its presence.

Dose-response relationships have been suggested for the role of estradiol (E2) in the induction of both the LH surge and estrous behavior in the ewe. However, it is not always clear whether it is the amount of E2 or the length of time that E2 is present that is important. Furthermore, in previous studies, the intensity of sexual behavior has rarely been studied quantitatively. Our aims in this work were to analyze in more detail the effects of two injected doses of estradiol benzoate (25 or 50 micrograms) for the induction of both the LH surge and estrous behavior (experiment I) and to dissoci

Effect of Salvia haematodes on sexual behaviour of male rats.

The effect of an ethanolic extract of Salvia haematodes roots was studied on the sexual behaviour of male rats. In the initial experiments, male sexual responses were assessed by recording penile erection, licking and grooming of genitals and copulatory movement in absence of females. In the second set, copulatory behaviour was observed by caging males with a receptive female brought into estrus with s.c. injection of estradiol benzoate and progesterone. The frequencies of mounting and intromission and latency of the ejaculation were recorded. The results show that the extract (500 mg/kg, oral

Role of septum and preoptic area in regulating masculine and feminine sexual behavior in male rats.

The effects of septal or preoptic lesions on both masculine and feminine sexual behaviors were examined in castrated adult male rats. Three weeks after brain surgery, animals were implanted with Silastic tubes containing testosterone (T) and observations of masculine sexual behavior were carried out four times every 5 days. T tubes were removed immediately after the end of the masculine behavioral tests. Two weeks later, animals implanted with Silastic tubes containing estradiol-17 beta(E2) were subjected to three feminine sexual behavioral tests at 5-day intervals. The bilateral lateral septa

Factors associated with reduced fertility and implantation rates in females mated to acrylamide-treated rats.

A series of studies was conducted to examine the role of copulatory dysfunction, spermatotoxicity, and/or impaired fertilization in the reduced rates of fertility and implantation observed in females mated to acrylamide-treated male rats. In initial experiments, males were gavaged with 0, 5, 15, 30, 45, or 60 mg/kg acrylamide (ACR) for 5 days and then mated serially to naive females. ACR treatment reduced fertility and increased pre- and post-implantation loss, primarily over the first 3 weeks post-treatment. The effects at Week 1 appeared to result from an interference in sperm transport as d

The role of the uterus in reproductive behavior.

The uterus plays a major role in reproductive physiology. Numerous studies have shown that estradiol and progesterone exert their effects by binding to receptors within the cytoplasm of uterine cells and translocating these receptors to the nuclei where they presumably alter genomic activity. The extent of the steroid-receptor interaction in the cytoplasm and the nucleus is well correlated with uterine growth. Other physiological changes that take place in the uterus are also correlated with variations in the cytoplasmic and nuclear steroid receptor levels observed during different stages of r
