Evidence of antibiotic resistance in Enterobacteriales isolated from green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas on the Great Barrier Reef.

This study investigated Enterobacteriales and their antimicrobial resistance in green sea turtles captured adjacent to the central Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and proximate to urban development. Cloacal swabs were taken from 73 green turtles between 2015 and 2016. A total of 154 out of 341 Gram-negative bacterial isolates were identified as Enterobacteriales that represent 16 different species from 9 different genera. The dominant isolates were Citrobacter (30.52%), Edwardsiella (21.43%) and Escherichia (12.34%). The resistance against 12 antibiotics belonging to 6 different classes was determine

Another possible risk for the Mediterranean Sea? Aspergillus sydowii discovered in the Port of Genoa (Ligurian Sea, Italy).

Aspergillus sydowii is a cosmopolitan fungus that has been responsible for the mass destruction of coral in the Caribbean Sea over the last 15years. To our knowledge, this study has found the first case of A. sydowii in the Mediterranean Sea, in marine-bottom sediments, water and calcareous shells of bivalve molluscs sampled during a campaign to characterise the mycobiota in the Port of Genoa (Italy). The area is characterised by adverse environmental conditions (high turbidity, organic pollution and high concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds). These parameters, in combination wi

Ciguatera fish poisoning in the Pacific Islands (1998 to 2008).

BACKGROUND: Ciguatera is a type of fish poisoning that occurs throughout the tropics, particularly in vulnerable island communities such as the developing Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs). After consuming ciguatoxin-contaminated fish, people report a range of acute neurologic, gastrointestinal, and cardiac symptoms, with some experiencing chronic neurologic symptoms lasting weeks to months. Unfortunately, the true extent of illness and its impact on human communities and ecosystem health are still poorly understood. METHODS: A questionnaire was emailed to the Health and Fisher

Crystal nucleation and growth of spherulites demonstrated by coral skeletons and phase-field simulations.

Spherulites are radial distributions of acicular crystals, common in biogenic, geologic, and synthetic systems, yet exactly how spherulitic crystals nucleate and grow is still poorly understood. To investigate these processes in more detail, we chose scleractinian corals as a model system, because they are well known to form their skeletons from aragonite (CaCO3) spherulites, and because a comparative study of crystal structures across coral species has not been performed previously. We observed that all 12 diverse coral species analyzed here exhibit plumose spherulites in their skeletons, wit

Population Genomics Highlight the Vulnerability of Coral-Dwelling Gobies to Ecological Losses due to Climatic Disturbances.

Predicting species resilience to climate change generally focuses on species life history and ecology, overlooking genomic changes following disturbances. After consecutive cyclones and heatwaves, coral-dwelling Gobiodon gobies have experienced extreme population and group size reductions, and slower recovery rates than their coral hosts. To assess genomic contributions to this vulnerability, we analysed multiple Gobiodon species for population structure (1) among three locations in western Oceania and (2) pre- and post-disturbances at the central location that underwent the same cyclones and

Self-serving punishment of a common enemy creates a public good in reef fishes.

A key challenge for evolutionary biologists is to determine conditions under which individuals benefit from a contribution to public goods [1, 2]. For humans, it has been observed that punishment of free riders may promote contributions [3, 4], but the conditions that lead to stable cooperation based on punishment remain hotly debated [5-8]. Here we present empirical evidence that public goods may emerge as a by-product of self-serving punishment in interactions between coral reef fishes and parasitic saber-tooth blennies that stealthily attack their fish victims from behind to take a bite [9]

Nutrient enrichment caused by in situ fish farms at Eilat, Red Sea is detrimental to coral reproduction.

Recent studies report conflicting results concerning the effects of eutrophication on coral reproduction. The present study examines reproductive effort in the brooding coral Stylophora pistillata exposed to chronic eutrophication caused by in situ fish cages (FC) in the northern Gulf of Eilat (Aqaba). Histological studies of 20 S. pistillata colonies transplanted to each of two study sites, one close to the nutrient enriched FC site and the other at a reference site (IUI), 8 km southwest of the FC site, show that, overall, corals from the FC site have a significantly higher percentage of poly

Metagenomic insights into sex-specific taxonomic and functional differentiation of epidermal mucus microbiota in the humphead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus).

The humphead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) is a large coral reef fish of high ecological and economic importance, whose epidermal mucus microbiota plays a critical role in host defense, immune regulation, and environmental adaptation. However, the influence of host sex on the structure and functional potential of epidermal mucus microbiota remains poorly understood. In this study, epidermal mucus samples were collected from sexually mature female and male humphead wrasse, and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed to systematically compare microbial community composition, diversity, and f

Habitat Suitability and Glacial Refugia of the Turbid-Water Coral Turbinaria peltata Across the Indo-West Pacific Ocean Based on MaxEnt Modeling.

As a typical turbid-water reef coral, Turbinaria peltata shows strong tolerance to high temperature and sediment disturbance, yet its basin-scale niche drivers and glacial distribution dynamics across the Indo-West Pacific remain unclear. Here we constructed optimized MaxEnt models using 322 independent distribution points and 21 non-collinear marine environmental variables for modern and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) scenarios. The model average test AUC reached 0.9874, showing excellent predictive performance. Water depth acted as the most influential predictor in the model (contribution = 44.7

The prevalence of benthic dinoflagellates associated with ciguatera fish poisoning in the central Red Sea.

This study confirms the presence of the toxigenic benthic dinoflagellates Gambierdiscus belizeanus and Ostreopsis spp. in the central Red Sea. To our knowledge, this is also the first report of these taxa in coastal waters of Saudi Arabia, indicating the potential occurrence of ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) in that region. During field investigations carried out in 2012 and 2013, a total of 100 Turbinaria and Halimeda macroalgae samples were collected from coral reefs off the Saudi Arabian coast and examined for the presence of Gambierdiscus and Ostreopsis, two toxigenic dinoflagellate genera

Refuge-seeking impairments mirror metabolic recovery following fisheries-related stressors in the Spanish flag snapper (Lutjanus carponotatus) on the Great Barrier Reef.

Fisheries and marine park management strategies for large predatory reef fish can mean that a large proportion of captured fish are released. Despite being released, these fish may experience high mortality while they traverse the water column to locate suitable refuge to avoid predators, all the while recovering from the stress of capture. The predatory reef fish Spanish flag snapper (Lutjanus carponotatus) is frequently released because of a minimum-size or bag limit or by fishers targeting more desirable species. Using L. carponotatus as a model, we tested whether simulated fishing stress (

Movement, residency, and behavioral plasticity of reef manta rays in the Samarai Islands of Papua New Guinea.

The reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) is a highly mobile pelagic marine ray found throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, but investigation into their behavior and ecology within Papua New Guinea has not been previously undertaken. Furthermore, the home range, dispersal characteristics, and inter-seasonal fine-scale habitat use of this species is limited. To address these data gaps and investigate the vertical and horizontal habitat use of a previously unstudied population, SPLASH10-F-321A pop-off archival satellite tags were used to track ten adult individuals from 4

Ferrihydrite-biochar augments ecological restoration in reclaimed coral islands via dual pathways: Antioxidant system stimulation and microbial metabolic mediated C/N cycling.

Reclaimed coral islands are facing serious challenges of vegetation restoration and ecological function reconstruction due to the salinity stress and nutrient scarcity. Ferrihydrite-, goethite-, magnetite-, and hematite-loaded biochars (FBC, GBC, MBC, HBC) were synthesized to enhance ecological restoration. Pot experiments with Ipomoea pes-caprae showed FBC outperformed controls and raw biochar, boosting plant fresh weight (63.9 %), height (18.1 %), and chlorophyll (111.3 %) while elevating SOD (407 %) and POD (143 %) activities, reducing MDA (41.2 %). FBC increased soil organic matter, enrich

Factors constraining natural recovery of Diadema antillarum following a mass die-off: a case study near the island of Saba, Caribbean Netherlands.

After the mass mortality of 1983-1984, recovery of the keystone herbivore Diadema antillarum has been limited. Persistently low population densities reduced grazing pressure, leading to algal dominance on many Caribbean reefs. To understand recovery dynamics and support restoration, greater insight into factors constraining sea urchin population recovery is essential. We assessed D. antillarum settlement, predator density, shelter availability, and post-die-off recovery at four locations near Saba, Caribbean Netherlands, following the 2022 D. antillarum die-off. One location, an artificial roc

Variability of the trophic state in a coastal reef system associated with submarine groundwater discharge in the Mexican Caribbean.

Submarine groundwater discharges (SGD) have been associated with important sources of nutrients between the land and oceans that can generate eutrophication conditions. This study aims to analyze the behavior of nitrogen and phosphorus using the mixing curve method, to examine the variation of the trophic state using the Karydis Index, and to evaluate the δ15N in benthic organisms to trace the origin of nitrogen in neap tide (November) and spring tide (January) in the Manatí Cenote, and Nohoch-Teek reef lagoon in the Mexican Caribbean. Nitrogen and phosphate enrichment was in the Manatí Cenote

Can excreted thiocyanate be used to detect cyanide exposure in live reef fish?

Cyanide fishing, where a solution of sodium or potassium cyanide is used to stun reef fish for easy capture for the marine aquarium and live fish food trades, continues to be pervasive despite being illegal in many countries and destructive to coral reef ecosystems. Currently, there is no easy, reliable and universally accepted method to detect if a fish has been exposed to cyanide during the capture process. A promising non-invasive technique for detecting thiocyanate ions, the metabolic byproduct excreted by exposed fish, has been reported in the literature. In an effort to validate this met

Genome resource banking for wildlife conservation: promises and caveats.

The value of cryopreserved germplasm in agriculture, aquaculture and medicine was recognized in the mid-twentieth century following the discovery in the late 1940s of a method for recovering viable spermatozoa after freeze-thawing. Sir Alan Parkes (a founder of cryobiology as a discipline) remarked that "time and space has been abolished for cattle breeding", a phrase that continues to summarise the potential value of the Genetic Resource Bank (GRB) concept for all species. The underlying principle behind these remarks was based on the recognition that spermatozoa could remain viable for many

New evidence indicates the presence of barracuda (Sphyraenidae) and supports a tropical marine environment in the Miocene of Madagascar.

Recent exploration of Miocene-age deposits at Nosy Makamby, a small island ~50 km southwest of Mahajanga city in northwestern Madagascar, has led to the recovery of a large sample [82] of isolated barracuda teeth (Sphyraena sp.). in a tropical marine fauna that also includes diverse marine invertebrates, chondrichthyans, bony fishes, turtles, crocodylians, and sirenians. Characteristically for barracudas, the teeth are labiolingually flattened and fang-like with a broadly triangular and blade-like acuminate outline and sharply edged but unserrated cutting margins. These barracudas inhabited an

Crinoid biology and ecology.

Crinoids (Class Crinoidea) are the oldest extant echinoderm lineage and possess one of the most complete fossil records of any marine animal group, spanning almost half a billion years. Although they dominated many Paleozoic benthic ecosystems, only approximately 731 species survive today, occupying habitats from shallow reefs to the deepest ocean trenches. This chapter provides a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge on crinoid biology and ecology, integrating evidence from modern and fossil taxa to examine the evolutionary processes that have shaped their remarkable persistence and di

An unusual case of colonic angiodysplasia.

An unusual case of a colonic vascular anomaly resembling angiodysplasia associated with right sided diverticular disease is presented. The patient, a 74 year old man, presented with a four day history of rectal bleeding and subsequently underwent hemicolectomy. The resected specimen was flushed out with heparin-saline solution and injected with a barium-gelatine mixture. Preoperative barium enema revealed right sided diverticula, whereas post-resection angioradiography revealed the "coral reef" vascular anomaly consistent with angiodysplasia. Histology confirmed the presence of both diverticul
