Parvovirus-B19 has been reported a rare cause of acute laryngitis. Here, we described an 11-month-old girl who had prolonged acute laryngitis and neutropenia associated with parvovirus-B19 infection. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy resulted in resolution of her symptoms, except neutropenia. We concluded that parvovirus-B19 can cause prolonged laryngitis and intravenous immunoglobulin treatment should be considered.

The assessment of the severity and response to therapy of acute upper airway obstruction (UAO) in small children relies on subjective parameters. Using a noncalibrated respiratory inductance plethysmograph (RIP), we quantitated the rib cage (RC) to abdominal (AB) asynchrony and the lag phase in chest wall expansion by the phase angle from the RC versus AB signal curve. The case histories of 150 children admitted to hospital with acute laryngotracheobronchitis (LTB) are reviewed. Relief of severe upper airway obstruction was achieved by nasotracheal intubation in 27 children (18%). There was no mortality in this series. Nasotracheal intubation is therefore a safe and effective means of treating severe LTB. In addition, the importance of meticulous nursing care is stressed.

Information about viral acute respiratory infections (ARIs) is essential for prevention, diagnosis and treatment, but it is limited in tropi … tly in children aged 24 months, respectively. Significant associations were found between PIV1 with croup (P < 0·005) and RSV with bronchiolitis (P < 0·005). HBoV and HRV were associated with hypoxia (P < 0·05) and RSV with retraction (P < 0·05). HRV, RSV, and HBoV were detected most frequently and they may increase the severity of ARIs in children.
