Neural fingerprint of the dark triad: Resting state BOLD power (fALFF) alterations in executive and default mode networks.

The neural foundations of the Dark Triad (DT) personality traits-narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy-remain largely unexplored despite their profound impact on social behavior. Previous research has indicated potential structural and functional alterations in the default mode network (DMN) and reward-related regions in individuals exhibiting high levels of DT traits. However, these studies have often been limited by univariate analytical methods and small, unbalanced sample sizes. To address these gaps, we analyzed brain scans from a robust sample of 200 participants (mean age 32.43

Effects of the anomia therapy on the default mode and the language networks of the brain: An functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study.

Elucidating the mechanisms of successful word retrieval by anomia therapy could improve our knowledge about language processing and also help design effective treatments. The two main subcomponents of resting-state networks related to language processing are the default mode network (DMN) and the language network (LN). To study how changes in brain activation occur due to anomia therapy, we investigated pre-and-post changes in the DMN and LN activation nodes in a deficit-based treatment of 15 persons with aphasia (PWAs). In this method, seven participants (mean age 46.71 ± 8.99) with predomina

Individualized precision targeting of dorsal attention and default mode networks with rTMS in traumatic brain injury-associated depression.

At the group level, antidepressant efficacy of rTMS targets is inversely related to their normative connectivity with subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC). Individualized connectivity may yield better targets, particularly in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders who may have aberrant connectivity. However, sgACC connectivity shows poor test-retest reliability at the individual level. Individualized resting-state network mapping (RSNM) can reliably map inter-individual variability in brain network organization. Thus, we sought to identify individualized RSNM-based rTMS targets that r

Repetitive negative thinking in daily life and functional connectivity among default mode, fronto-parietal, and salience networks.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a maladaptive response to sadness and a transdiagnostic risk-factor. A critical challenge hampering attempts to promote more adaptive responses to sadness is that the between-person characteristics associated with the tendency for RNT remain uncharacterized. From the perspective of the impaired disengagement hypothesis, we examine between-person differences in blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) functional networks underlying cognitive conflict signaling, self-referential thought, and cognitive flexibility, and the association between sadness and RNT in da

Individual variation in intentionality in the mind-wandering state is reflected in the integration of the default-mode, fronto-parietal, and limbic networks.

Mind-wandering has a controversial relationship with cognitive control. Existing psychological evidence supports the hypothesis that episodes of mind-wandering reflect a failure to constrain thinking to task-relevant material, as well the apparently alternative view that control can facilitate the expression of self-generated mental content. We assessed whether this apparent contradiction arises because of a failure to consider differences in the types of thoughts that occur during mind-wandering, and in particular, the associated level of intentionality. Using multi-modal magnetic resonance i

A method for safely resecting anterior butterfly gliomas: the surgical anatomy of the default mode network and the relevance of its preservation.

OBJECTIVE Gliomas invading the anterior corpus callosum are commonly deemed unresectable due to an unacceptable risk/benefit ratio, including the risk of abulia. In this study, the authors investigated the anatomy of the cingulum and its connectivity within the default mode network (DMN). A technique is described involving awake subcortical mapping with higher attention tasks to preserve the cingulum and reduce the incidence of postoperative abulia for patients with so-called butterfly gliomas. METHODS The authors reviewed clinical data on all patients undergoing glioma surgery performed by th

Functional MRI assessment of task-induced deactivation of the default mode network in Alzheimer's disease and at-risk older individuals.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in old age, and is characterized by prominent impairment of episodic memory. Recent functional imaging studies in AD have demonstrated alterations in a distributed network of brain regions supporting memory function, including regions of the default mode network. Previous positron emission tomography studies of older individuals at risk for AD have revealed hypometabolism of association cortical regions similar to the metabolic abnormalities seen in AD patients. In recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of AD, co

Recollection of verbal materials engages the default mode network more strongly than recollection of visual materials: An fMRI meta-analysis.

Functional neuroimaging studies consistently show that episodic recollection engages the default mode network (DMN), yet the extent to which this engagement varies with the representational content of retrieved information remains unclear. The present meta-analysis examined whether recollection of verbal and visual materials differentially recruits the DMN. Twenty-four verbal and 19 visual studies were included; recollection was operationalized using subjective measures, and network correspondence was assessed using the Yeo 17-network parcellation. Both forms of recollection engaged the DMN, b

Altered default mode network homogeneity in chronic insomnia disorder: modulation by modified suanzaoren decoction and estazolam, and machine learning classification.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic Insomnia Disorder (CID) is characterized by maladaptive self-referential thinking linked to default mode network (DMN) dysfunction. Network Homogeneity (NH), a measure of local functional integration within networks, may capture this dysregulation but remains underexplored in CID and its response to treatment, particularly herbal medicine. METHODS: This study employed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate DMN NH in 82 patients with CID (52 treated with Modified Suanzaoren Decoction [MSZRD], 30 with Estazolam) and 65 matched healthy contro

Abnormal effective connectivity of default mode network subsystems affects depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances in adolescents with internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND: Studies have demonstrated that Internet gaming disorder (IGD) was associated with sleep and psychological disorders. The default mode network (DMN) is not a unitary system, but rather is composed of smaller and distinct functional subsystems that interact with each other. We aimed to assess the functional relevance of these subsystems and the neural underpinnings of clinical symptoms in IGD. METHOD: We recruited 47 IGD adolescents and 56 healthy controls, and examined their effective connectivity (EC) from three DMN subsystems by using dynamic causal modelling (DCM), including mid

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Specific Alternations in the Default Mode Network in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Voxel-Based Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common and debilitating mental disorder. Neuroimaging studies have highlighted that a dysfunctional default mode network (DMN) plays a key role in the pathophysiological mechanisms of OCD. However, findings of impaired DMN regions in OCD have been inconsistent. We used meta-analysis to identify functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-specific abnormalities of the DMN in OCD. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were searched to screen resting-state fMRI studies of the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation/fractional amplitude o

Different posterior hippocampus and default mode network modulation in young APOE ε4 carriers: a functional connectome-informed phenotype longitudinal study.

To determine the functional connectome change pattern based on subregions of the hippocampus in young APOEε4 carriers during a 3-year follow-up. All the participants (n = 213) were tested for resting-state functional MRI, neuropsychological scales, and APOE genotype. The age- and sex-matched APOE ε4/ε3 (23.9 ± 3.2 years old, 6 female/7 male) carriers and APOE ε3/ε3 (22.9 ± 1.6 years old, 7 female/12 male) carriers were finally followed up. The hippocampus and its anterior/middle/posterior subregion-based functional connectivity (FC) patterns were compared between APOEε4 and APOEε3 groups by a

Polarity-specific high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation of the anterior and posterior default mode network improves remote memory retrieval.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies show that activity in the posterior default mode network (pDMN), including the posterior cingulate cortex and the precuneus, is correlated with the success of long-term episodic memory retrieval. However, the role of the anterior DMN (aDMN) including the medial prefrontal cortex is still unclear. Some studies show that activating the medial prefrontal cortex improves memory retrieval while other studies show deactivation of the medial prefrontal cortex in successful retrieval of episodic memories, suggesting a possible functional dissociation between the aDMN and p

Complexity Analysis of the Default Mode Network Using Resting-State fMRI in Down Syndrome: Relationships Highlighted by a Neuropsychological Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Studies on complexity indicators in the field of functional connectivity derived from resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) in Down syndrome (DS) samples and their possible relationship with cognitive functioning variables are rare. We analyze how some complexity indicators estimated in the subareas that constitute the default mode network (DMN) might be predictors of the neuropsychological outcomes evaluating Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and cognitive performance in persons with DS. METHODS: Twenty-two DS people were assessed with the Kaufman Brief Test of Intelligence (KBIT) and Frontal As

Enhanced functional connectivity of the default mode network (DMN) in patients with spleen deficiency syndrome: A resting-state fMRI study.

Numerous studies had investigated the biological basis of spleen deficiency syndrome on gastrointestinal dysfunctions. However, little was known about neuropsychological mechanism of spleen deficiency syndrome. The default model network (DMN) plays an important role in cognitive processing. Our aim is to investigate the change of neuropsychological tests and DMN in patients with spleen deficiency syndrome.Sixteen patients and 12 healthy subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging examination, and 15 patients with spleen deficiency syndrome and 6 healthy subjects take part in the t

Aberrant Resting-State Functional Connectivity in the Default Mode Network in Pediatric Bipolar Disorder Patients with and without Psychotic Symptoms.

Mood disorders/psychosis have been associated with dysfunctions in the default mode network (DMN). However, the relative contributions of DMN regions to state and trait disturbances in pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible mechanisms of PBD through brain imaging and explore the influence of psychotic symptoms on functional alterations in PBD patients. Twenty-nine psychotic and 26 non-psychotic PBD patients, as well as 19 age- and sex-matched healthy controls underwent a resting-state functional MRI scan and the data were analyzed

Resting-State Default Mode Network Related Functional Connectivity Is Associated With Sustained Attention Deficits in Schizophrenia and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Background: Previous studies have indicated the resting-state default mode network (DMN) related connectivity serving as predictor of sustained attention performance in healthy people. Interestingly, sustained attention deficits as well as DMN-involved functional connectivity (FC) alterations are common in both patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Thus, the present study was designed to investigate whether the DMN related resting-state connectivity alterations in these two psychiatric disorders were neural correlates of their sustained attention impai

Stronger default mode network connectivity is associated with poorer clinical insight in youth at ultra high-risk for psychotic disorders.

Impaired clinical insight (CI) is a common symptom of psychotic disorders and a promising treatment target. However, to date, our understanding of how variability in CI is tied to underlying brain dysfunction in the clinical high-risk period is limited. Developing a stronger conception of this link will be a vital first step for efforts to determine if CI can serve as a useful prognostic indicator. The current study investigated whether variability in CI is related to major brain networks in adolescents and young adults at ultra high-risk (UHR) of developing psychosis. Thirty-five UHR youth we
