INTRODUCTION: Dental pulp can be exposed to hypoxic conditions in case of trauma or inflammation. Dental pulp cells (DPCs) have mineralization potential, which plays a key role in pulp repair and reparative dentinogenesis process. Little information is available about DPC mineralization in hypoxic condition. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of hypoxia on DPC mineralization to pave the way for a better understanding of dental pulp regeneration and reparative dentin formation.
METHODS: Human DPCs were obtained by using tissue explant technique in vitro and cultured in normo

BACKGROUND: Mandibular masses caused by inflammatory processes due to bacterial infections, most common with Actinomyces bovis, are well known in herbivors. This case represents a rare differential diagnosis to common inflammatory processes which cannot be distinguished from neoplasia without detailed histopathological examination.
CASE PRESENTATION: A large unilateral mandibular mass of a free-ranging female adult red deer (Cervus elaphus elaphus) was submitted for pathological examination. The animal had been shot due to its poor body condition. Grossly, the mandibular mass showed gingival

This study was carried out to observe if the status of the root canal might influence the healing process of surgically prepared experimental periodontal lesions. Forty tooth roots from four dogs were divided into four different groups: a) root canals with vital pulps, b) root canals open to the oral environment, c) root canals infected and filled with zinc oxide eugenol cement, and d) root canals infected and filled with calcium hydroxide. By means of a surgical intervention, a cavity was prepared in the medium portion of the roots. Six months later, the specimens were removed and prepared fo

There is a need for dental age estimation methods after completion of the third molar mineralization. Degenerative dental characteristics appear to be suitable for forensic age diagnostics beyond the 18th year of life. In 2012, Olze et al. investigated the criteria studied by Gustafson using orthopantomograms. The objective of this study was to prove the applicability and reliability of this method with a large cohort and a wide age range, including older individuals. For this purpose, 2346 orthopantomograms of 1167 female and 1179 male Germans aged 15 to 70 years were reviewed. The characteri

Results of this study showed no correlation between the thickness or amount of reparative dentin deposited and the type of dental restorative material placed at either 5 or 8 weeks in controlled Class V cavity preparations in monkey teeth. Factors such as preparation trauma from the bur, operator hand instrumentation, and microleakage of bacterial toxins played a greater role in the stimulation of reparative dentin than did material irritation or toxicity. Some differences in the thickness of the reparative dentin deposited were noted when teeth were grouped according to the amount of remainin

The findings from the recent literature on pulpal cell responses to the application of calcium hydroxide to exposed pulps are described. The effect of calcium hydroxide on healthy and inflamed pulp is discussed. The effect of incorporation of calcium hydroxide in various pulp-capping agents is presented. The initial effect of calcium hydroxide applied to exposed pulp is the development of a superficial three-layer necrosis. The beneficial effect of calcium hydroxide is regarded as the result of the chemical injury caused by the hydroxyl ions, limited by a zone of firm necrosis against the vita

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is an inherited metabolic disorder that results in poorly mineralised bones and teeth. Clinical symptoms vary widely from mild dental anomalies to fatal fetal defects. The most common dental symptoms include exfoliation of the primary incisors before the age of three with little or no root resorption, large pulp chambers, alveolar bone loss and thin dentinal walls. There is generally minimal periodontal inflammation associated with the bony destruction and tooth loss. The general dental practitioner is usually the first clinician to spot signs of the milder forms of HPP.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hypophosphatemia can result from a variety of acquired disorders, such as malnutrition, intestinal malabsorption, hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, excess alcohol intake, some drugs, or organ transplantation. Genetic disorders can be a cause of persistent hypophosphatemia, although they are less recognized. We aimed to better understand the prevalence of genetic hypophosphatemia in the population.
METHODS: By combining retrospective and prospective strategies, we searched the laboratory database of 815,828 phosphorus analyses and included patients 17-55 years old
