Morphological plasticity of endophytic Chitinophaga pinensis.

Environmental changes, whether due to climate change or human influences, compromise the resilience of plants to biotic and abiotic stresses, such as pathogens, drought and heat. Plant microbiota are known to promote plant resilience. To be able to harness the power of the plant microbiome we need to identify microbiota with health-promoting properties. Recent studies have demonstrated that the bacterium Chitinophaga pinensis enhances plant health and increases resistance to fungal infections. Here, we show that C. pinensis exhibits an unusually high morphological plasticity, switching between

Aridity-related differences in soil elemental ratios reshape microbial functional traits across global biomes.

Aridity alters soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) stoichiometry, yet the implications of these processes for soil microbial functional traits and potentials at the genomic level remain poorly synthesized. Here we combine measurements of soil C, N and P pools and ratios with shotgun metagenomes from 200 natural ecosystems spanning major biomes worldwide. Across sites, increased aridity is associated with lower soil C:N and N:P (and C:P) ratios and with a coordinated shift in microbial functional potential. Genes linked to catabolic resource acquisition-including carbohydrate-activ

Soil microbial responses to multiple global change factors as assessed by metagenomics.

Anthropogenic activities impose multiple concurrent pressures on soils globally, but responses of soil microbes to multiple global change factors are poorly understood. Here, we apply 10 treatments (warming, drought, nitrogen deposition, salinity, heavy metal, microplastics, antibiotics, fungicides, herbicides and insecticides) individually and in combinations of 8 factors to soil samples, and monitor their bacterial and viral composition by metagenomic analysis. We recover 742 mostly unknown bacterial and 1865 viral Metagenome-Assembled Genomes (MAGs), and leverage them to describe microbial

Comparing the Mechanical Properties of Rice Cells and Protoplasts under PEG6000 Drought Stress Using Double Resonator Piezoelectric Cytometry.

Plant cells' ability to withstand abiotic stress is strongly linked to modifications in their mechanical characteristics. Nevertheless, the lack of a workable method for consistently tracking plant cells' mechanical properties severely restricts our comprehension of the mechanical alterations in plant cells under stress. In this study, we used the Double Resonator Piezoelectric Cytometry (DRPC) method to dynamically and non-invasively track changes in the surface stress (ΔS) generated and viscoelasticity (storage modulus G' and loss modulus G″) of protoplasts and suspension cells of rice under

MYC2 regulates stomatal density and water use efficiency via targeting EPF2/EPFL4/EPFL9 in poplar.

Although polyploid plants have lower stomatal density than their diploid counterparts, the molecular mechanisms underlying this difference remain elusive. Here, we constructed a network based on the triploid poplar transcriptome data and triple-gene mutual interaction algorithm and found that PpnMYC2 was related to stomatal development-related genes PpnEPF2, PpnEPFL4, and PpnEPFL9. The interactions between PpnMYC2 and PagJAZs were experimentally validated. PpnMYC2-overexpressing poplar and Arabidopsis thaliana had reduced stomatal density. Poplar overexpressing PpnMYC2 had higher water use eff

Disaster mycology.

Natural and human-made disasters have long played a role in shaping the environment and microbial communities, also affecting non-microbial life on Earth. Disaster microbiology is a new concept based on the notion that a disaster changes the environment causing adaptation or alteration of microbial populations -growth, death, transportation to a new area, development traits, or resistance- that can have downstream effects on the affected ecosystem. Such downstream effects include blooms of microbial populations and the ability to colonize a new niche or host, cause disease, or survive in forme

SlMYB30 relieves high vapor pressure deficit stress by modulating salicylic acid biosynthesis and stomatal morphology in tomato.

High vapor pressure deficit (HVPD) stress presents challenges to global agriculture, impacting crop productivity, water resource management, ecosystem stability, and food security. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is an economically important crop grown extensively around the world; however, the molecular mechanisms that enable its resistance to HVPD stress are not yet fully understood. In this study, V-MYB AVIAN MYELOBLASTOSIS VIRAL ONCOGENE HOMOLOG 30 (SlMYB30), an R2R3-type MYB transcription factor responsive to HVPD stress in tomato, was identified through transcriptomic and metabolomic an

Genome-Wide Analysis of Triticum aestivum Root Meristem Growth Factor (RGF) Gene Family Highlights TaRGF5 as a Putative Component of Root-Associated Signaling.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum), a key global crop, faces rising drought stress that limits root growth and water uptake. Root meristem growth factors (RGFs) are small peptides that regulate root stem cell maintenance, meristem activity, and lateral root formation in model plants, yet the RGF gene family remains unexplored in wheat. Here, we performed a comprehensive genome-wide analysis of the TaRGF gene family, identifying 15 genes distributed across the A, B, and D subgenomes and classified into five homeologous groups (TaRGF1-TaRGF5), predominantly located on chromosomes 2 and 6. All TaRGFs cont

Stress-induced Bacillus subtilis DLD-8 volatiles enhance drought tolerance in mung bean via 2,3-butanediol-MYB interaction.

Drought is major abiotic constraint limiting mung bean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) productivity. Rhizobacterial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are increasingly being recognized for their role in plant-microbe interactions including growth promotion and stress tolerance. This study evaluated the effects of VOCs on biometric and physiological responses of mung bean under osmotic stress and examined interaction of the most efficient VOC with a MYB protein. VOCs from five rhizobacterial cultures, grown under non-stress and osmotic stress conditions, were assessed in vitro and in vivo. VOCs from

Overexpression of cotton GhMKK4 enhances disease susceptibility and affects abscisic acid, gibberellin and hydrogen peroxide signalling in transgenic Nicotiana benthamiana.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades are involved in plant development, stress responses and hormonal signal transduction. MAPK kinases (MAPKKs), as the key nodes in these cascades, link MAPKs and MAPKK kinases (MAPKKKs). In this study, GhMKK4, a novel group C MAPKK gene from cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), was isolated and identified. Its expression can be induced by various stresses and signalling molecules. The overexpression of GhMKK4 in Nicotiana benthamiana enhanced its susceptibility to bacterial and fungal pathogens, but had no significant effects on salt or drought tolerance.

Transcriptome-wide survey and expression analysis of stress-responsive NAC genes in Chrysanthemum lavandulifolium.

The plant-specific NAC (NAM, ATAF, and CUC) transcription factor family plays a vital role in various plant growth and developmental processes as well as in stress resistance. Using RNA sequencing, we found that the ClNAC genes (ClNAC1-44) were the most strongly up-regulated transcription factor family in Chrysanthemum lavandulifolium leaves under salt treatment. We carried out reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction to monitor ClNAC genes response against multiple stresses and hormonal treatments including salt, drought, cold, heat, abscisic acid and salicylic acid treatments. Managing environmental antimicrobial resistance (AMR) under climate change: current gaps and future needs.

Climate change-induced environmental alterations are significantly accelerating the development and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment through multiple interconnected pathways. Rising global temperatures facilitate bacterial adaptation and mutation rates, with studies demonstrating that even small temperature increases can enhance bacterial resistance gene stability and horizontal transfer efficiency. Extreme weather events such as flooding and droughts disrupt sanitation infrastructure, leading to increased pathogen transmission and subsequent antimicrobial use

Determinants of antimicrobial resistance in biosolids: A systematic review, database, and meta-analysis.

Biosolids can provide a nutrient rich soil amendment, particularly for poor soils and semi-arid or drought-prone areas. However, there are concerns that sludge and biosolids could be a source of propagation and exposure to AMR determinants such as antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). To inform risk assessment efforts, a systematic literature review was performed to build a comprehensive spreadsheet database of ARB and ARG concentrations in biosolids (and some sludges specified as intended for land application), along with 69 other quantitative and qualit

Trichoderma crassum WMM-1-7 reshapes the rhizosphere metabolome of Pseudostellaria heterophylla with benefits.

Pseudostellaria heterophylla (Miq.) Pax ex Pax et Hoffm. is a medicinally and economically critical plant cultivated for its tuberous roots, with a documented history in traditional medicine spanning three millennia. Under the escalating pressures of global climate change (e.g., drought and soil salinization), ensuring stable and high-yield production of P. heterophylla is imperative for market sustainability. The beneficial fungus T. crassum has demonstrated potential in enhancing crop abiotic stress resistance through multiple biological processes. Critically, Trichoderma-mediated rhizospher

Bacterial extracellular vesicles as emerging biostimulants in plant microbe signaling and stress tolerance.

Bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) are nanosized membrane-bound nanoparticles naturally secreted by Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. These vesicles mediate intercellular communication through delivery of diverse bioactive cargo, including proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, metabolites, and signaling molecules. Initially recognized as virulence determinants in pathogenic bacteria, BEVs are increasingly recognized as multifunctional platforms with potential applications in sustainable agriculture. This review examines BEV biogenesis, cargo composition, plant uptake, and emerging role

H2S aids osmotic stress resistance by S-sulfhydration of melatonin production-related enzymes in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Hydrogen sulfide closed Arabidopsis thaliana stomata by increasing the transcription of melatonin-producing enzymes and the post-translational modification levels to combat osmotic stress. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and melatonin (MEL) reportedly have similar functions in many aspects of plant growth, development and stress response. They regulate stomatal movement and enhance drought resistance. However, their physiological relationship is not well understood. Here, their crosstalk involved in osmotic stress resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana was studied. Exogenous H2S and MEL closed stomata unde

Differential regulation of 3-aminomethylindole/N-methyl-3-aminomethylindole N-methyltransferase and gramine in barley by both biotic and abiotic stress conditions.

The expression of NMT (3-aminomethylindole/N-methyl-3-aminomethylindole N-methyltransferase; EC 2.1.1.), involved in the biosynthesis of the indole alkaloid gramine, was investigated in aphid-infested barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). NMT is induced by methyl jasmonate and it was hypothesized that the gene would be more strongly upregulated in aphid-resistant barley. We examined the effects of feeding by three aphid species; Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia Mordvilko), rose-grain aphid (Metopolophium dirhodum Walker) and bird cherry-oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi L.) on barley genotypes with var

Dynamic Physiological Phenotyping of Drought-Stressed Pepper Plants Treated With "Productivity-Enhancing" and "Survivability-Enhancing" Biostimulants.

The improvement of crop productivity under abiotic stress is one of the biggest challenges faced by the agricultural scientific community. Despite extensive research, the research-to-commercial transfer rate of abiotic stress-resistant crops remains very low. This is mainly due to the complexity of genotype × environment interactions and in particular, the ability to quantify the dynamic plant physiological response profile to a dynamic environment. Most existing phenotyping facilities collect information using robotics and automated image acquisition and analysis. However, their ability to di

Multiple stresses occurring with boron toxicity and deficiency in plants.

Boron (B), an essential nutrient for plants, participates in many physiological processes, with emphasis its role in the formation of the plant's cell wall. In soil, the range between deficiency and toxicity of B is very narrow as compared to other nutrients, which makes its management in agriculture very difficult, as it depends on the soil and environmental conditions. B stress simultaneously acts with others (extreme temperatures, excess of light, high concentration of CO2, drought, salinity or heavy metal contamination, etc.). The effects of these other stresses could increase the sensitiv

Light-Dependent Regulation of Drought Tolerance in Cucumber Plants by Melatonin.

Water availability, light spectral composition, and phytohormones jointly regulate plant morphogenesis and photosynthesis. Light quality can modify stress responses by altering endogenous regulators such as melatonin. However, it remains unclear whether light spectrum modulates melatonin-mediated protection under osmotic stress. Here, we investigated the effects of 1 μM melatonin on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) subjected to polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG-6000)-induced osmotic stress under three distinct photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) spectral compositions. Our results indicate that
