Congenital and hereditary ocular abnormalities in cats.

Congenital and inherited ocular diseases are reported less frequently in the cat than the dog. The 2 species also differ in their array of disorders, with familiar canine abnormalities like cataracts overshadowed by unique feline diseases such as eyelid agenesis and corneal sequestration. Organized according to the primary ocular structure affected and commingling congenital and inherited disorders in each section, the review begins with multiple ocular anomalies and their impact on globe-orbit relationship. Adnexal disorders include eyelid agenesis, entropion, dermoid, and nictitans gland pro

Predicting surgical compliance in a cohort of women with trichiasis.

Trichiasis/Entropion are the severe consequences of chronic trachoma during early life. Blindness and vision loss is preventable with timely lid surgery to correct trichiasis. In a trachoma hyperendemic region of Central Tanzania, a two year follow-up survey was conducted among 205 women with trichiasis to determine the proportion who had had surgery and the barriers to having surgery. Only 18% of the women had undergone surgery by the 2 year follow-up. Those who had surgery tended to report more eye problems at baseline and have more corneal opacities at baseline. Barriers preventing women fr

Trachoma and blindness in the Nile Delta: current patterns and projections for the future in the rural Egyptian population.

A population based survey of trachoma and blindness was conducted in a rural Nile Delta hamlet. Trachoma remains hyperendemic in this region. Active trachoma was common among preschool children; over half had moderate to severe disease. Of residents 25 years old 90% had substantial conjunctival scarring. Severe conjunctival scarring was commoner among women (84%) than men (58%), and three-quarters of older women had trichiasis/entropion compared with 57% of older men. Males and females had equivalent age specific rates of inflammatory disease. Blindness was associated with old age; 17% of resi

Cornea and iris changes in congenital ectropion uvea after trabeculotomy.

This article details a previously undescribed complication of trabeculotomy occurring in a patient with congenital ectropion uvea and discusses its possible association with an anterior chamber membrane. A 6-year-old boy with congenital ectropion uvea underwent trabeculotomy. After the trabeculotome was swept into the anterior chamber, multiple ovoid and round endothelial and posterior stromal opacities developed in the cornea, and new areas of iris surface irregularities appeared. This is the first reported case of corneal endothelial and iris changes occurring in a patient with congenital ec

Etiology of tearing in patients seen in an oculoplastic clinic in Saudi Arabia.

AIM: To determine the prevalence of various causes of tearing among patients referred to an oculoplastic clinic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study on all patients seen in an oculoplastic clinic with a chief complaint of tearing. The cause of tearing was determined on the basis of the anatomical location of the primary etiology. RESULTS: This study included 357 patients with a mean age 53.9 years. Punctal stenosis was the most common etiology, affecting 37.8% of the patients. Among patients with punctual stenosis, 63.4% were women over 50-year-old (P = 0.001); 55.6% had tearing for l

The transconjunctival approach to the orbital floor and orbital fat. A prospective study.

The transconjunctival approach to the inferior orbit and orbital fat offers the potential advantage of avoidance of scar creation in the lower eyelid skin and anterior lamellae. Complications of this approach, including conjunctival fornix shortening and eyelid margin malposition, have been occasionally reported. We prospectively observed 25 patients undergoing transconjunctival blepharoplasty and orbital floor surgery. Fornix depth, eyelid margin position, and the presence or absence of eyelid retraction were measured preoperatively and at each postoperative visit. No significant permanent ch

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction after toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis also known as Lyell's syndrome is acute dermatomyositis as an adverse drug reactions. It is characterized by erosions of skin over 30% of total body surface area and is associated with significant mortality of 25%-50% of cases. The conjunctival mucosa involvement could result in cornea erosion and ulceration. Other ocular complications are: purulent conjunctivitis with pseudomembrane formation, entropion, symblefaron and synechiae with nasolacrimal duct obstruction or punctual stenosis. The authors present a very rare complication of nasolacrimal duct obstruction aft

Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid.

CP is a systemic disease of presumed autoimmune etiology that may involve the skin, conjunctiva, or any mucosal surface. As many patients present with ocular symptoms, ophthalmologists must inquire about signs of potential life-threatening esophageal and laryngeal involvement. Ocular involvement is a bilateral chronic cicatricial conjunctivitis that may result in fornix foreshortening, symblepharon formation, trichiasis, and entropion and keratinization of the eyelids and conjunctiva. These mechanical factors are responsible for progressive scarring and vascularization of the ocular surface. S

Orbito-palpebral reconstruction in anophthalmos and severe congenital microphthalmos.

In patients with congenital anophthalmos and severe microphthalmos, a tiny orbit and socket exist with little eyelids, frequently preventing retention of a standard conformer or prosthesis. Socket expansion is sometimes impossible with microorbitism; the retention of a prosthesis is also difficult when malformations of the eyelids exist. The treatment of these difficult cases includes three stages. The first stage is orbital expansion that depends on the cephalometric studies of the patient: transverse osteotomy on the maxilla and the zygomatic bone with lateral bar by extracranial route, vert

Meshed conjunctival incision technique: an efficient technique for contracted eye socket.

OBJECTIVE: To present a surgical technique for socket reconstruction in cases in which forniceal shortening by scar has made it difficult to successfully wear an ocular prosthesis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 19 contracted eye sockets that underwent forniceal reconstruction with meshed conjunctival incision technique from 2009 to 2012. The technique included three steps: meshed conjunctival incision, lower forniceal reconstruction and upper fornix incision. RESULTS: There were 17 male and two female patients, with an age range between 6 and 67 years. Duration of forniceal shortening

Clinical manifestations of mucous membrane pemphigoid in a tertiary center.

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is a progressive inflammatory disease of autoimmune etiology. We performed a retrospective analysis of clinical signs and treatment on 16 patients. Conjunctival biopsies were performed in all patients and showed typical immuno-deposits at the basement membrane zone. The mean age at presentation was 69 years, 60 % were female.12 patients demonstrated ocular involvement (11 bilaterally). At the time of referral to our hospital, 92 % had reached an advanced stage III or IV. All patients presented conjunctival fibrosis with resultant fornix foreshortening. Trichias

Noncosmetic periocular therapeutic applications of botulinum toxin.

Botulinum toxin blocks acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction. The drug which was initially found to be useful in the treatment of strabismus has been extremely effective in the treatment of variety of conditions, both cosmetic and noncosmetic. Some of the noncosmetic uses of botulinum toxin applications include treatment of spastic facial dystonias, temporary treatment of idiopathic or thyroid dysfunction-induced upper eyelid retraction, suppression of undesired hyperlacrimation, induction of temporary ptosis by chemodenervation in facial paralysis, and correction of lower eyelid

Bilateral simultaneous primary orbital lymphoma presenting with unilateral enophthalmos.

A 73-year-old woman was examined for palpable orbital masses behind the right upper eyelid and left lower eyelid leading to entropion. Hertel exophthalmometry readings were 6.0 mm in the right eye and 11.0 mm in the left eye with a base of 102 mm. MRI revealed bilateral hypointense orbital soft-tissue masses. Pathologic evaluation of incisional biopsy specimens revealed malignant tissue composed of diffuse, mitotically active, atypical large lymphoid cells positive for CD-20 with immunohistochemical staining, confirming the diagnosis of malignant diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Systemic survey
