Bacteria-bacteriophage cycles facilitate Cholera outbreak cycles: an indirect Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Bacteria- Phage (iSIRBP) model-based mathematical study.

Cholera is an acute enteric infectious disease caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Despite a huge body of research, the precise nature of its transmission dynamics has yet to be fully elucidated. Mathematical models can be useful to better understand how an infectious agent can spread and be properly controlled. We develop a compartmental model describing a human population, a bacterial population as well as a phage population. We show that there might be eight equilibrium points, one of which is a disease free equilibrium point. We carry out numerical simulations and sensit

Exposure Measurement Error in Air Pollution Studies: The Impact of Shared, Multiplicative Measurement Error on Epidemiological Health Risk Estimates.

Spatiotemporal air pollution models are increasingly being used to estimate health effects in epidemiological studies. Although such exposure prediction models typically result in improved spatial and temporal resolution of air pollution predictions, they remain subject to shared measurement error, a type of measurement error common in spatiotemporal exposure models which occurs when measurement error is not independent of exposures. A fundamental challenge of exposure measurement error in air pollution assessment is the strong correlation and sometimes identical (shared) error of exposure est

Mechanistic analysis of COVID-19 cases in Chile during the second half of 2020: an SIR model with dynamic transmission rate.

INTRODUCTION: This article analyzes the prolonged trough phase in the epidemic curve associated with COVID-19 dynamics in Chile during the period July-December 2020, characterized by a relatively stable daily record of 1 000-2500 cases. METHODS: Unlike traditional (, )-SIR models, with constant parameters and associated respectively with the transmission and removal rates in the infectious process, which predict unimodal behavior, we propose an approach based on Contagion Mechanics that incorporates a dynamic law for the transmission rate . RESULTS: Using official data from the Department of

Gaussian process emulation for exploring complex infectious disease models.

Epidemiological models that aim for a high degree of biological realism by simulating every individual in a population are unavoidably complex, with many free parameters, which makes systematic explorations of their dynamics computationally challenging. In this study, we demonstrate how Gaussian Process emulation can overcome this challenge. To simulate disease dynamics, we developed an abstract individual-based model that is loosely inspired by dengue, incorporating some key features shaping dengue epidemics such as social structure, human movement, and seasonality. We focused on three epidem

Deployment, Calibration, and Cross-Validation of Low-Cost Electrochemical Sensors for Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, and Ozone for an Epidemiological Study.

We designed and built a network of monitors for ambient air pollution equipped with low-cost gas sensors to be used to supplement regulatory agency monitoring for exposure assessment within a large epidemiological study. This paper describes the development of a series of hourly and daily field calibration models for Alphasense sensors for carbon monoxide (CO; CO-B4), nitric oxide (NO; NO-B4), nitrogen dioxide (NO2; NO2-B43F), and oxidizing gases (OX-B431)-which refers to ozone (O3) and NO2. The monitor network was deployed in the Puget Sound region of Washington, USA, from May 2017 to March 2

Disentangling the effects of exposure and susceptibility on transmission of the zoonotic parasite Schistosoma mansoni.

For all parasites, transmission is composed of two processes: host contact with parasites ('exposure') and risk of infection given such contact ('susceptibility'). Classic models, such as mass action (density-dependent) transmission, lump these processes together. However, separating these processes could enhance predictions for disease dynamics, especially for free-living parasites. Here, we outline three transmission models that partition exposure and susceptibility. Using data from a study of Schistosoma mansoni (trematode) infections in Biomphalaria glabrata snails, we competed these three

Genuine and spurious bistability in a simple epidemic model with waning immunity.

We study an infection-age structured epidemic model in which both the infectivity and the rate of loss of immunity depend on the time-since-infection. The model can be equivalently viewed as a nonlinear renewal equation for the incidence of infection or as a partial differential equation for the density of infected individuals. We explicitly consider gamma, rather than Erlang, distributed durations of infection using a combination of ODE approximations and numerical bifurcation methods. We show that the shape of this distribution strongly influences stability of the endemic equilibrium, even w

VIBES: A multiscale modeling approach integrating within-host and between-hosts dynamics in epidemics.

Infectious disease spread is a multiscale process composed of within-host (biological) and between-host (social) drivers and disentangling them from each other is a central challenge in epidemiology. Here, we introduce VIBES, a multiscale modeling framework that explicitly integrates viral dynamics based on patient-level data with population-level transmission on a data-driven network of social contacts. Using SARS-CoV-2 as a case study, we analyze three emergent epidemic properties, namely the generation time, serial interval, and presymptomatic transmission. First, we established a purely bi

Modeling the behavior of a generalized Cholera epidemic model with asymptomatic measures for early detection.

To understand how a disease spreads through a society, mathematical formulations are a crucial tool for comprehending the complete dynamics of cholera. Model formulations are essential for thoroughly understanding the propagation of cholera throughout a population. For an assessment of the stable state of a newly established SEIRB system, both qualitative and quantitative evaluations are conducted. The reproductive number is derived to observe the infection spread rate among patients. Additionally, sensitivity analyses are performed to assess the impact of each parameter and to determine the r

Parasitic contamination cycles and mathematical epidemiology.

Mathematics plays an essential role in epidemiology. Whether simple questions are asked about simple relations, or complicated questions about complicated relations, the best fitting mathematical figures are always searched for. In a holistic approach, it may often be necessary to assess complicated relations by using (real) mathematical models (simulation models). Examples are presented of parasitic contamination cycles which require more or less complicated mathematics to answer epidemiological questions regarding prevalence and incidence of infection in the human population: Trichinella, To

Associations of neonicotinoid exposure with renal function: A cross-sectional study with long-term toxicological validation.

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) continuously exert chronic effects on human health, yet their impacts on renal function remain understudied. This study investigates the association between NEOs and renal function utilizing an integrated epidemiological and toxicological approach. Urinary NEOs and their characteristic metabolites were quantified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in 847 individuals from a Yinchuan community-dwelling elderly cohort. Multiple epidemiological models were employed to systematically evaluate both single and mixed exposure associations with

Fixed effects analysis of repeated measures data.

The analysis of repeated measures or panel data allows control of some of the biases which plague other observational studies, particularly unmeasured confounding. When this bias is suspected, and the research question is: 'Does a change in an exposure cause a change in the outcome?', a fixed effects approach can reduce the impact of confounding by time-invariant factors, such as the unmeasured characteristics of individuals. Epidemiologists familiar with using mixed models may initially presume that specifying a random effect (intercept) for every individual in the study is an appropriate met

Understanding the interplay between epidemiological and social cognitve drivers of behaviour change during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there is growing evidence that the social epidemiological context may play a crucial role in the adoption of health protective behaviours in response to emerging infectious diseases. Yet, our understanding of how and why these behaviours are influenced by the epidemiological forces remains relatively limited. This repeated, cross-sectional investigation examines the extent to which the association between the socio-epidemiological context and protective behaviour was mediated by a series of common social cognitive factors from leading models of health behaviour dur

Evaluation of stochastic trajectory-based epidemic models using the energy score.

Scoring rules are critical for evaluating the predictive performance of epidemic models by quantifying how well their projections and forecasts align with observed data. In this study, we introduce the energy score as a performance metric for stochastic trajectory-based epidemic models. As a multivariate extension of the continuous ranked probability score (CRPS), the energy score provides a single, unified measure for time-series predictions. It evaluates both calibration and sharpness by considering the distances between individual trajectories and observed data, as well as the inter-traject

Optimal strategies for fair vaccine allocation: integrating non-pharmaceutical interventions, regional quarantine, and social challenges in epidemic control.

It is essential to control epidemic diseases and adopt an optimal strategy when an epidemic occurs. In this research, a myopic model is presented. In this regard, an epidemic model is presented considering social challenges such as vaccine acceptance, quarantine of infected individuals, and regional quarantine. The vaccine allocation model was constructed to incorporate specific outputs from the epidemiological model, including (i) the weight of each cluster within each region, (ii) the vaccine demand of each cluster in each region, (iii) the relative infectiousness of region g, and (iv) the r

Understanding zoonotic disease spread with a fractional order epidemic model.

Zoonotic diseases, which are transmitted between animals and humans, pose significant public health challenges, especially in regions with high human-wildlife interactions. This study presents a novel fractional-order mathematical model to analyze the transmission dynamics of zoonotic diseases between baboons and humans in the Al-Baha region. The model incorporates the Atangana-Baleanu fractional derivative to account for memory effects and spatial heterogeneity, offering a more realistic representation of disease spread. The fractional Euler method is employed for numerical simulations, enabl

Effect of cross-immunity in a two-strain cholera model with aquatic component.

The bacteria Vibrio cholerae relies heavily upon an aquatic reservoir as a transmission route with two distinct serotypes observed in many recent outbreaks. In this paper, we extend previously studied ordinary differential equation epidemiological models to create a two-strain SIRP (susceptible-infectious-recovered-pathogen) system which incorporates both partial cross-immunity between disease strains and environmental pathogen transmission. Of particular interest are undamped anti-phase periodic solutions, as these display a type of coexistence where strains routinely switch dominance, and un

Can supervised deep learning architecture outperform autoencoders in building propensity score models for matching?

PURPOSE: Propensity score matching is vital in epidemiological studies using observational data, yet its estimates relies on correct model-specification. This study assesses supervised deep learning models and unsupervised autoencoders for propensity score estimation, comparing them with traditional methods for bias and variance accuracy in treatment effect estimations. METHODS: Utilizing a plasmode simulation based on the Right Heart Catheterization dataset, under a variety of settings, we evaluated (1) a supervised deep learning architecture and (2) an unsupervised autoencoder, alongside tw

EPIsembleVis: A geo-visual analysis and comparison of the prediction ensembles of multiple COVID-19 models.

We present EPIsembleVis, a web-based comparative visual analysis tool for evaluating the consistency of multiple COVID-19 prediction models. Our approach analyzes a collection of COVID-19 predictions from different epidemiological models as an ensemble and utilizes two metrics to quantify model performance. These metrics include (a) prediction uncertainty (represented as the dispersion of predictions in each ensemble) and (b) prediction error (calculated by comparing individual model predictions with the recorded data). Through an interactive visual interface, our approach provides a data-driv
