Long-term mandibular skeletal and dental effects of standard edgewise treatment.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effect of Tweed edgewise treatment on the expression of mandibular growth in the horizontal direction through maintenance of vertical control. METHODS: We studied 36 patients who had 4 premolars extracted during treatment. Pretreatment, posttreatment, and postretention records of these patients were matched by age (± 6 months), sex, malocclusion, and treatment interval (± 6 months) to untreated controls from the Bolton-Brush Growth Study Center, Cleveland, Ohio. The cephalograms of the 2 samples were traced, digitized, and ana

Canine substitution of congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors in Class I and Class III malocclusions by using skeletal anchorage.

INTRODUCTION: This prospective cohort study aimed to evaluate canine substitution supported by skeletal anchorage as a viable treatment protocol for patients with maxillary lateral incisor agenesis (MLIA) and skeletal Class I or Class III. METHODS: Patients (n = 30) who met the following criteria were recruited: (1) bilateral MLIA or unilateral MLIA with a riziform contralateral incisor with a planned extraction; (2) skeletal Class I or Class III; and (3) dentoalveolar discrepancy in the mandible <5 mm. The archwire sequence routine was administered, combined with a rapid palatal expander, te

Three-dimensional dental model analysis of treatment outcomes for protrusive maxillary dentition: comparison of headgear, miniscrew, and miniplate skeletal anchorage.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this retrospective study on dental models was to compare the orthodontic outcomes of maxillary dentoalveolar protrusion treated with headgear, miniscrews, or miniplates for maximum anchorage. METHODS: The 40 subjects were diagnosed as having either Angle Class II malocclusion or Class I bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion. All patients were treated to retract the maxillary dentoalveolar process by using the extraction space of the bilateral maxillary first premolars. They were divided into 3 groups according to the type of anchorage used. Group 1 (n = 16) received tr

Management of Klippel-Feil syndrome combined with Turner syndrome: a case report.

A 12-year-old female with Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) combined with Turner syndrome (TS) and a submucous cleft palate (CP) was presented. The patient reportedly had TS and had received growth hormone (GH) therapy. Because of her skeletal Class III pattern with a steep mandibular plane angle, facial asymmetry, and fused cervical vertebrae, the effects of the GH on her craniofacial complex needed to be considered at the start of orthopedic/orthodontic treatment. To manage submucous CP with severe maxillary deficiency, a rigid external distraction (RED) device was used. The total active treatment

The correction of maxillary defciency with internal distraction devices: a multidisciplinary approach.

AIM: The purpose of this case report is to present the orthodontic, surgical and restorative treatments in the case of an operated cleft lip and palate and severe maxillary defciency in a 14-year-old female patient. BACKGROUND: Only orthodontic treatment could be ineffcient for cleft lip and palate patients characterized with maxillary hypoplasia. Orthodontic and surgical treatment shows suffcient results, especially with severe skeletal defciency. CASE REPORT: A cleft lip and palate patient required complex multidisciplinary treatment to preserve health and restore esthetics. Dental levelin

Long-term stability of LeFort III distraction osteogenesis with a rigid external distraction device in a patient with Crouzon syndrome.

A 6-year-old boy, diagnosed with Crouzon syndrome, had moderate exorbitism, a concave profile, an anterior crossbite of -4.0 mm, and a skeletal Class III jaw-base relationship caused by midfacial hypoplasia. At age 8 years 9 months, a LeFort III osteotomy was performed, and distraction osteogenesis was immediately started with the rigid external distractor system. The midface was advanced approximately 10.0 mm for 6 days, including overcorrection. After the distraction, a reverse headgear was used for 6 years to prevent relapse and to accelerate expected growth. At age 16 years 5 months, after

Dentoskeletal effects of facemask therapy in skeletal Class III cleft patients with or without bone graft.

INTRODUCTION: The association between maxillary protraction and bone graft in patients with cleft lip and palate remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a secondary alveolar bone graft influences dentoskeletal effects of facemask therapy in unilateral cleft lip and palate patients with a skeletal Class III relationship. METHODS: In this prospective nonrandomized clinical trial, 61 consecutive boys with unilateral cleft lip and palate and skeletal Class III malocclusion were divided into 3 groups: grafted facemask group (n = 21), ungrafted facemask group (n = 20),

Long-term orthodontic and surgical treatment and stability of a patient with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a congenital growth disorder. Children born with BWS develop enlarged organs, including the tongue, a large body, and other signs. A woman with BWS was treated and followed for 30 years. Treatment consisted of tongue reduction, orthopedic and orthodontic treatment, orthognathic surgery, and retention. The patient was first treated when she was 5 years old. Her original orthodontic problems included macroglossia, anterior open bite, anterior crossbite, and a skeletal Class III jaw relationship caused by significant mandibular protrusion. The jaw-base relatio

Open bite: diagnosis, treatment and stability.

Open bite has fascinated Orthodontics due to the difficulties regarding its treatment and maintenance of results. This anomaly has distinct characteristics that, in addition to the complexity of multiple etiological factors, have aesthetic and functional consequences. Within this etiological context, several types of mechanics have been used in open bite treatment, such as palatal crib, orthopedic forces, occlusal adjustment, orthodontic camouflage with or without extraction, orthodontic intervention using mini-implants or mini-plates, and even orthognathic surgery. An accurate diagnosis and e

Periodontal status of mandibular incisors after pronounced orthodontic advancement during adolescence: a follow-up evaluation.

The purpose of this study was to analyze whether pronounced orthodontic advancement of the mandibular incisors during Class II correction in the mixed dentition results in gingival recession. Through mandibular superimposition of the pretreatment and posttreatment cephalograms of 67 Class II patients who were treated with reverse headgear to the mandibular dentition, 45 patients with a minimum of a 1-mm advancement of the cementoenamel junction (CEJ; mean, 2.18 +/- 0.87) and a minimum of a 2-mm advancement of the incisal edge (mean, 3.87 +/- 1.34) were identified. Using the same protocol in Cl

Effects of intrusion combined with anterior retraction on apical root resorption.

This study evaluated the influence of intrusion mechanics combined with anterior retraction on root resorption of the maxillary incisors. A sample of 56 patients was divided into two groups: group 1 comprised 28 patients (12 females and 16 males), presenting with an increased overjet and deep overbite (6.48 and 4.78 mm, respectively) treated with reverse curve of Spee intrusion mechanics and group 2 comprised 28 patients (12 females and 16 males) with an increased overjet of 5.67 mm and a normal overbite of 1.12 mm. The initial mean ages for groups 1 and 2 were 13.41 and 13.27 years, respectiv
