This study examines to what extent personality and existential constructs predict the frequency of reminiscence, in general, and its various functions, in particular. Eighty-nine older adults completed the NEO-Five Factor Inventory, the Life Attitude Profile--Revised, and the Reminiscence Functions Scale. Neuroticism predicted total reminiscence frequency, as well as reminiscence for self-understanding and ruminating about a negative past. Extraversion predicted total reminiscence frequency, as well as reminiscence for generating stimulation, conversation, and maintaining memories of departed

Mania is the core criterion for bipolar disorder, a chronic and severe psychiatric illness centrally associated with positive affective disturbance. Many self-report measures have been created to assess symptoms of, and risk for, mania but there are notable disparities in their length, scope, and content. Thus, the goal of this study was to determine the structure and correlates of a number of widely used "bipolar-relevant" (BR) measures (e.g., Hypomanic Personality Scale, Altman Self-Rating Mania Scale, General Behavior Inventory, Mood Disorder Questionnaire). Data from a community sample (St

BACKGROUND: This study compared a dimensional, trait domain approach to characterizing personality pathology with the traditional polythetic approach with respect to their associations with interpersonal functioning and personality traits from the five factor model.
METHODS: Psychiatric inpatients (N=1476) were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II personality disorders. Dimensional representations of trait domains were derived from reorganizing DSM-IV criteria into personality trait domains from DSM-5 Alternative Model. Dimensional scores and personality disorder

BACKGROUND: The authors conducted a prospective investigation into the relation between personality traits and the risk for cancer.
METHODS: The study cohort consisted of 29,595 Swedish twins from the national Swedish Twin Registry who were ages 15-48 years at time of entry. In 1973, the twins completed a questionnaire eliciting information on personality traits and health behavior. The Eysenck Personality Inventory was used to measure neuroticism and extroversion as two personality dimensions. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals fo

BACKGROUND: Pain and aches are part of subjective experience. Caring for chronically ill children and adolescents not only objective results but also the children s subjective perception of their illness should be taken into consideration. We have tried to record the extent of subjective suffering of a group of pediatric rheumatic patients and to correlate our findings with personality traits.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: We interviewed thirty-one 8 to 18 years old children and adolescents (average age 12 years) by means of a standardized questionnaire (Giessener Beschwerdefragebogen) and of a standa

OBJECT: Intensive Naikan therapy (INT) is used to treat irrational recognition, and to develop awareness of others and self-reflection. Several reports have also shown that INT is effective for treating anxiety disorders. The purpose of the present systematic study was to investigate the factors contributing to the efficacy and clinical outcomes of INT by assessing the background, psychological evolution, and treatment required after such therapy.
METHOD: Twenty-eight anxiety disorder inpatients at Tottori University Hospital, 15 with general anxiety disorders (GAD) and 13 with panic disorder

BACKGROUND: Although drug trafficking is one of the most prevalent crimes around the world, drug dealers used to be a hard-to-reach population far away from attention by public health programmes. Decisions to participate in such instrumental crimes, however, are based on external and internal factors that could be investigated and perhaps modified.
AIM: To identify drug use problems and personality factors consistently related to the drug trafficking recidivism among incarcerated drug dealers.
METHOD: Data were from 179 men serving a sentence for drug trafficking in two Brazilian penitentiar

Social anxiety is a neurobehavioral trait characterized by fear and reticence in social situations. Twin studies have shown that social anxiety has a heritable basis, shared with neuroticism and extraversion, but genetic studies have yet to demonstrate robust risk variants. We conducted genomewide association analysis (GWAS) of subjects within the Army Study To Assess Risk and Resilience in Servicemembers (Army STARRS) to (i) determine SNP-based heritability of social anxiety; (ii) discern genetic risk loci for social anxiety; and (iii) determine shared genetic risk with neuroticism and extrav

BACKGROUND: Whether antidepressants influence personality is a major clinical and societal issue due to their widespread use. In an observational study, we investigated whether depressive patients' neuroticism and extraversion scores covary with antidepressant pharmacotherapy, and if so, whether this remains significant after accounting for depressive or anxiety symptoms.
METHODS: Major depressive disorder patients (N=237) were interviewed at up to four time-points in a five-year prospective longitudinal study. Changes in neuroticism plus extraversion scores were compared with changes in anti

Panic disorder (PD) is often correlated with high neuroticism and low extraversion. This study aims to ascertain whether PD patients differ from healthy controls in regard to personality traits and determine if these traits are correlated with comorbid disorders, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Personality traits of 69 PD patients and 42 controls were compared using the Maudsley Personality Inventory. In PD patients, comorbidities, anxiety, and depression symptoms were also evaluated. PD patients showed higher neuroticism and lower extraversion compared with healthy controls. Patients withou

The amygdala plays a key role in emotion processing. Its functional connectivity with other brain regions has been extensively demonstrated to be associated with extraversion and neuroticism. However, how the amygdala affects other regions and is affected by others within these connectivity patterns associated with extraversion and neuroticism remains unclear. To address this issue, we investigated the effective connectivity of the amygdala using Granger causality analysis on the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data of 70 participants. Results showed that extraversion was p

The present study tests the relationships between the three frequently used personality models evaluated by the Temperament Character Inventory-Revised (TCI-R), Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five Factor Inventory - Revised (NEO-FFI-R) and Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire-50- Cross-Cultural (ZKPQ-50-CC). The results were obtained with a sample of 928 volunteer subjects from the general population aged between 17 and 28 years old. Frequency distributions and alpha reliabilities with the three instruments were acceptable. Correlational and factorial analyses showed that several sca

BACKGROUND: Whether levels of neuroticism or extraversion differ between patients with bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and subjects from the general population, or between BD I and BD II patients, remains unclear.
METHODS: BD patients (n=191) from the Jorvi Bipolar Study, and MDD patients (n=358) from both the Vantaa Depression Study and the Vantaa Primary Care Depression Study cohorts, were interviewed at baseline and at 18 months. A general population comparison group (n=347) was surveyed by mail. BD patients' neuroticism and extraversion scores, measured by Eysenck P

High-altitude hypoxia is associated with sleep disruption, affective fluctuation, and changes in cognitive performance, yet prior findings remain markedly heterogeneous in both direction and magnitude. To clarify this variability, this structured narrative review synthesizes evidence from systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and key empirical studies on psychological and cognitive adaptation to high-altitude hypoxia, with a particular focus on personality and related traits. The review is organized along three axes: exposure context and characterization (real-altitude field/residential exposure,

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mood disorder occurring within the first year after childbirth, characterized by persistent sadness, fatigue, and bonding difficulties. This study focuses on mothers in Aurangabad, Bihar-a region with limited health-care facilities, high poverty, low education, and strong cultural beliefs about motherhood and mental health. We hypothesized that positive Big Five personality traits correlate with lower PPD levels, and that social support enhances this protective effect.
METHODS: This cross-sectional survey involved 300 mothers of child

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety (SA) disorder is a common psychological condition; however, its boundaries with autism spectrum disorder remain a subject of debate. This study examines the contribution of personality, cognitive, and autistic traits to manifestations of SA in adults. To assess how personality, cognitive, and autistic traits affect SA and to define the impact of autistic features on its development.
METHODS: The study included 72 adults (42 women, 30 men) over 18, with different levels of SA and autistic traits. Participants completed several questionnaires: Social Anxiety and Socia

This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to assess the relationship between personality factors and the DC/TMD Axis II scores of psychosocial impairment among patients with pain related temporomandibular disorders (TMD). 120 participants (60 females and 60 males) who were diagnosed with pain related TMD according to the Axis I DC/TMD protocol were recruited. The participants were requested to complete four tests including the NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) to assess personality factors and three Axis II DC/TMD tools; the Graded Chronic Pain Scale (GCPS) Version 2.0 to assess TMD pain i

OBJECTIVE: Recent evidence suggests that naturally occurring low cholesterol concentrations (<4.14 mmol/liter) are associated with depression as well as poor psychological health. For the most part, these associations have been observed in men. The current study assessed the relation of naturally occurring low lipid and lipoprotein concentrations to trait measures of depression and anxiety in 121 healthy young adult women.
METHODS: Fasting lipid samples were collected at the same time as health history. Trait depression and anxiety were assessed using the Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness-P

BACKGROUND: The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine has profoundly disrupted maternal care systems, exposing pregnant women and new mothers to extreme contextual adversity. While many relocated abroad, others remained to give birth in a war zone. The psychosocial and health-related factors shaping these decisions remain poorly understood. The purpose of the study is to identify the psychological, contextual, and dispositional factors associated with women's wartime decisions to remain in Ukraine or relocate abroad.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data were collected online between December 2022 a
