Congenital hemihypertrophy. Tendency to association with other abnormalities and/or tumors.

Nine cases of congenital hemihypertrophy of an entire half of the body ("true" hemihypertrophy) were investigated in relation to literature data. The left side was more often affected (7:2) and the abnormality was more frequent in females (5:4). Associated abnormalities were present in all cases: a single abnormality in 3 cases (mental retardation, iris heterochromia and, respectively, left foot gigantism) and 3 to 13 abnormalities in the other 6 cases. Prominent hemiface, asymmetric macroglossia on the affected side, unequally developed breasts, unilateral gigantism of the foot, iris heteroch

Complementary Fat Graft Retention Rates Are Superior to Initial Rates in Craniofacial Contour Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The purposes of this study were to (1) assess complementary fat graft outcomes, (2) compare initial and complementary fat graft retention rates, and (3) evaluate the influence of different postoperative time points (3, 6, and 12 months after the initial procedure) for performing complementary fat grafting on fat graft outcomes. METHODS: A prospective analysis was conducted on patients with unilateral craniofacial contour deformities (n = 115) who underwent initial and complementary fat grafting. Complementary fat grafting was performed 3, 6, or 12 months after the initial fat graf

Parry-Romberg syndrome in Kuwait. Neurological manifestations in 2 children.

Parry-Romberg syndrome is a rare disorder with progressive hemifacial atrophy of unknown etiology. We reported 2 cases of progressive hemifacial atrophy with different neurological manifestations from Kuwait. The first case was a 14-year-old boy who initially presented with recurrent transient stroke-like episodes followed by focal seizures and hemifacial atrophy. Magnetic resonance imaging showed significant white matter changes and cerebral hemiatrophy. The second case was a 7-year-old girl who presented with complex partial seizures and hemifacial atrophy, her magnetic resonance imaging sca

Three-dimensional visualization of the human face using DICOM data and its application to facial contouring surgery using free anterolateral thigh flap transfer.

One of the main challenges faced by surgeons performing reconstructive surgery in cases of facial asymmetry due to hemifacial atrophy or tumor surgery is the restoration of the natural contour of the face. Soft-tissue augmentation using free-flap transfer is one of the most commonly used methods for facial reconstruction. The most important part of a successful reconstruction is the preoperative assessment of the volume, position, and shape of the flap to be transplanted. This study focuses on three cases of facial deformity due to hemifacial progressive atrophy or tumor excision. For the preo

Clinical application of human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells in progressive hemifacial atrophy (Parry-Romberg disease) with microfat grafting techniques using 3-dimensional computed tomography and 3-dimensional camera.

BACKGROUND: Parry-Romberg disease is a rare condition that results in progressive hemifacial atrophy, involving the skin, dermis, subcutaneous fat, muscle, and, finally, cartilage and bone. Patients have been treated with dermofat or fat grafts or by microvascular free flap transfer. We hypothesized that adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) may improve the results of microfat grafting through enhancing angiogenesis. We evaluated the utility of ASC in microfat grafting of patients with Parry-Romberg disease by measuring the change in the hemifacial volumes after injection of ASCs with microfat gra

Structural fat grafting: facial volumetric restoration in complex reconstructive surgery.

BACKGROUND: The authors overview the application of structural fat grafting (SFG) in the management of volumetric deficit in the maxillofacial area. Structural fat grafting was introduced as a way to improve facial aesthetics and in recent years has evolved into applications in craniomaxillofacial reconstructive surgery. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study population was composed of patients grafted with autologous fat referred to our department from February 2005 to July 2009. Each patient was operated on with SFG technique according to Coleman. Subjects were screened to these possessing a

The history of injectable silicone fluids for soft-tissue augmentation.

BACKGROUND: The debate over the legitimacy of silicone as a safe tool for soft-tissue augmentation has spanned well over half a century. Proponents concede that injections of questionable purity and/or of massive quantities have produced unfavorable outcomes. They assert that in experienced hands with "injectable-grade" silicone, there are very few problems. Despite these claims, the literature is replete with disastrous outcomes following silicone fluid injection, often many years after the initial treatment. METHODS: An extensive review of the English-language literature was conducted using

Spontaneous carotid-jugular fistula and carotid dissection in a patient with multiple intracranial arachnoid cysts and hemifacial atrophy: a generalized connective tissue disorder? Case report.

The authors report a case of a 45-year-old woman with pulsatile tinnitus who was found to have an unusual spontaneous fistula between the petrous internal carotid artery and internal jugular vein. The fistula resolved spontaneously, possibly related to daily manual compression of the ipsilateral common carotid artery. The patient also had a contralateral carotid artery dissection, multiple intracranial arachnoid cysts, and hemifacial atrophy. Her medical history was significant for easy bruisibility, abnormal scarring, and mitral valve prolapse. This association appears unique and may represen

Microvascular reconstruction in the head and neck.

With the advent and refinement of microvascular surgical techniques, the results of reconstruction in the head and neck area have been substantially improved. Free flaps can now be moved in one stage for reconstruction of composite tissue in the head and neck area, whereas multiple procedures were often necessary to accomplish such reconstructions in the past. Skin, fat, muscle, bone, and intraoral lining can all be reestablished by using microvascular techniques. Because of the availability of microvascular surgical procedures, defects caused by cancer, congenital anomalies, or acquired disor

Ocular manifestations and treatment of hemifacial atrophy.

Enophthalmos, flattening of the maxilla that may progress to inferior orbital rim and floor defects, eyelid atrophy, and slight relative hypotony occurred in patients with hemifacial atrophy. Less common manifestations included pupillary and iris abnormalities, vertical muscle imbalances, and retinal changes. The prognosis for vision was good. Fluid silicone injection was the major modality in treatment and the results were generally excellent.

Fat transplantation to the buttocks and legs for aesthetic enhancement or correction of deformities: long-term results of large volumes of fat transplant.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive review of the history of free fat transplantation reveals that since 1893 when Neuber used small pearls of fat taken from the arm to fill out depressed facial scars after trauma and underlying bone loss, free fat graft has been used with success in facial surgery, brain and nervous system surgery, various orthopedic uses, general surgery, craniofacial surgery, and cosmetic surgery. OBJECTIVE: To present the author's hypothesis that a fat graft in cosmetic surgery responds like other kinds of tissue grafts. This article was written as a result of the author's search

Parry-Romberg syndrome: a novel treatment algorithm derived from long-term follow-up and more than 40 years of surgeon's experience.

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS), or progressive hemifacial atrophy, is a rare, heterogeneous disorder characterized by unilateral facial atrophy affecting the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, and sometimes osseocartilaginous structures. Due to its variability in severity and unclear treatment timing, a standardized surgical approach remains controversial. A retrospective review was conducted of patients diagnosed with PRS who were evaluated or treated by the senior author between 1978 and 2018. Inclusion criteria required availability of complete medical records and photographs. Patients were c

Parry-Romberg syndrome vasculopathy and its treatment with botulinum toxin.

Parry-Romberg syndrome is a rare condition characterized by progressive, hemifacial atrophy, hair loss, enophthalmos, retinal vasculopathy occasionally associated with hemicranial pain syndrome (secondary trigeminal neuralgia). The cause of the condition is unknown; however, substantial evidence suggests that vasculopathy plays a significant role in the genesis of the neurologic damage and facial lipodystrophy. Herein describes a case of Parry-Romberg syndrome treated with repetitive botulinum type A toxin injections, with almost complete resolution of severe chronic pain.

A significant proportion of children with morphea en coup de sabre and Parry-Romberg syndrome have neuroimaging findings.

En coup de sabre (ECDS) and Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) are variants of linear morphea on the head and neck that can be associated with neurologic manifestations. Intracranial abnormalities on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are present in a significant proportion of individuals with these conditions. We describe 32 children from our institution with ECDS or PRS; neuroimaging was performed in 21 cases. We also review 51 additional cases from the literature. Nineteen percent of the children at our institution with ECDS or PRS had intracranial abnormalities on MRI,
