Health professionals' experiences of behavioural family therapy for adults with intellectual disabilities: a thematic analysis.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Behavioural Family Therapy (BFT) has been shown to help people with some severe mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia, by reducing relapse rates and stress within families. It can be difficult to put family interventions, like BFT, into clinical practice. Families where someone has an intellectual disability can experience more stress compared to those who do not, but we know very little about using BFT with families where a member has an intellectual disability. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: We interviewed nine Community Lear

Understanding the mental health consequences of family separation for refugees: Implications for policy and practice.

Consistent evidence documents the negative impacts of family separation on refugee mental health and concerns for the welfare of distant family members and desire to reunite with family members as priorities for refugees postmigration. Less is known about refugees' emic perspectives on their experiences of family separation. Using mixed methods data from a community-based mental health intervention study, we found that family separation was a major source of distress for refugees and that it was experienced in a range of ways: as fear for family still in harm's way, as a feeling of helplessnes

Residential Proximity to Roadways and Ischemic Placental Disease in a Cape Cod Family Health Study.

Exposure to air pollution may adversely impact placental function through a variety of mechanisms; however, epidemiologic studies have found mixed results. We examined the association between traffic exposure and placental-related obstetric conditions in a retrospective cohort study on Cape Cod, MA, USA. We assessed exposure to traffic using proximity metrics (distance of residence to major roadways and length of major roadways within a buffer around the residence). The outcomes included self-reported ischemic placental disease (the presence of at least one of the following conditions: preecla

How family carers engage with technical health procedures in the home: a grounded theory study.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the experiences of family carers who manage technical health procedures at home and describe their learning process. DESIGN: A qualitative study using grounded theory. California Family Planning Health Care Providers' Challenges to Same-Day Long-Acting Reversible Contraception Provision.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent to which practices offering family planning services are able to offer intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants in one visit and to identify the reasons why multiple visits may be required. METHODS: In the fall of 2011, 1,000 California family planning providers were asked about their long-acting reversible contraception delivery practices in a probability survey. We used multivariable logistic regression to examine practice characteristics associated with same-day provision of IUDs and implants. RESULTS: Among the 636 responding practices, 67% offered an IUD

Effects of infant health on family food insecurity: evidence from two U.S. birth cohort studies.

Extremely little is known about the effects of health on food insecurity despite strong associations between the two and a theoretical basis for this avenue of inquiry. This study uses data from two national birth cohort studies in the U.S., the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (N = ∼9400) from 2001 to 2003 and the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 2458) from 1998 to 2003, to estimate the effects of poor infant health on child and household food insecurity and explore the potential buffering effects of public programs that provide food, healthcare, and cash assista

Mental health, suicide, and self-centered behavior: focus on the japanese family and the elderly.

My mother-in-law is very selfish because she has been living alone for a long time. She is so used to living alone that she thinks nothing of doing things like vacuuming at midnight. My mother-in-law only talks about herself and doesn't seem very interested in her son or what other people say or are doing. This makes it difficult to interact and communicate with her. I do not want to take care of my mother-in-law should she become ill and this is something I think about, since my husband is the eldest son.

Risk factors for HIV-1 infection in India: evidence from the National Family Health Survey.

To study demographic, social, behavioural and biological variables as risk factors for HIV infection among men and women in India, we used data from the cross-sectional, population-based National Family Health Survery (NFHS)-3 2005-06. During the survey, 52,853 women aged 15-49 years and 50,093 men aged 15-54 years gave consent to anonymous HIV testing. HIV serostatus data for men and women were analysed for their relationships to key characteristics using bivariate and multivariate techniques. In the analysis of the study sample, in both men and women the ages of highest risk for HIV were bet

Risk factors for premature termination of treatment at a child and family mental health clinic.

OBJECTIVE: Premature termination of treatment amongst children and families attending mental health services is a significant problem for both outcomes research and clinical practice in South Africa and elsewhere. This study investigated factors that are associated with premature termination of treatment at a public service child and family clinic in Cape Town. METHOD: A retrospective archival analysis of clinic files from 2002-2009 was conducted. Administrative, child and family factors, and type of treatment were explored as risk factors for premature termination. RESULTS: A single-parent

Sexual and drug use behavior in perinatally HIV-infected youth: mental health and family influences.

OBJECTIVE: As perinatally human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected (PHIV+) youths enter adolescence, they are at high risk for poor behavioral and health outcomes. This study examines relations between youth mental health problems and sexual and substance use risk behavior, the impact of caregiver mental health and family functioning on youth mental health and risk behavior outcomes, and the role of youth HIV status in this process. METHOD: Participants were recruited from four medical centers. Individual interviews were administered to 193 PHIV+ and 127 perinatally HIV exposed but uninfec

Family history of cancer and risk of breast cancer in the Black Women's Health Study.

INTRODUCTION: Relatively little research has been conducted on familial breast cancer in African American women. METHODS: Data from the Black Women's Health Study, a prospective cohort study of African American women, were used to assess breast cancer risk in relation to family history of cancer. Since 1995, participants have completed biennial postal questionnaires on health status, risk factors, and family history of cancer. Cox proportional hazards analyses were used to calculate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for family history of breast and other types of

Changing screening strategies for genital chlamydia in family planning clinics: a good public health strategy?

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence and factors associated with genital chlamydia in 1996 and to evaluate the introduction of restricted screening criteria based on diagnostic testing and prevention of iatrogenic pelvic inflammatory disease in 1997. PATIENTS: Women attending Liverpool family planning clinics. METHOD: Clinical and demographic data were recorded at routine clinic consultations. Data were analyzed using logistic regression. RESULTS: In 1996, a 5.7% (123/2165) chlamydial prevalence was detected. A significantly lower prevalence was observed in the over-25-year-old age group c

Health and well-being of women family carers: a comparative study with a generic focus.

OBJECTIVE: To examine differences between women family carers of people with chronic illnesses or disabilities and a group of women 'non-carers' in self-reported physical health, psychological well-being, life satisfaction, social support and feelings of overload. METHOD: Using a computer-assisted telephone interviewing system, a random survey of more than 26,000 households was conducted in Victoria to identify and then interview a representative sample of family carers of people with disabilities or chronic illnesses. The women in the sample (n = 857) were then compared with a sample of wome

Relationship between AIDS and family planning programmes: a rationale for developing integrated reproductive health services.

This paper examines the potential links between family planning and maternal and child health programmes and the emerging needs of the global AIDS epidemic; and assesses the feasibility of organizing comprehensive reproductive health programmes in developing countries to include the prevention and control of reproductive tract infections including sexually transmitted infections as well as HIV/AIDS. The paper discusses arguments opposing the integration of programmes against sexually transmitted infections within family planning and MCH programmes, as well as the programmatic and epidemiologic
