BACKGROUND: The standard treatment for the conservative management of a proximal phalanx fracture of the little finger involves immobilizing the fracture site with a cast. However, cast immobilization presents challenges in maintaining hygiene during treatment and restricts the fine motor movements of the fingers. In this study, we developed a removable orthosis that immobilizes only the ring and little fingers. We examined the splint's effectiveness in joint immobilization and its impact on fine motor movements of the fingers.
METHOD: Twenty healthy adults were included in this study conduct

BACKGROUND: Clinical diagnosis and classification of trigger fingers is traditionally based on physical examinations and certain obvious symptoms. However, it might lack quantitative evidence to describe the different graded trigger digits. This study provides quantitative evidence of kinematics and functional differences among different graded trigger fingers based on Froimson's classification.
METHODS: Forty-seven patients with fifty-five trigger fingers and graded twenty-three, eleven, and twenty-one fingers as grades II, III, and IV, respectively. The QuickDASH questionnaire evaluated the

Many regions of the hand are affected seriously in the patients with complex severe postburn hand contractures. Multiple flap choices should be in count to treat complex severe postburn hand contractures affectively. We preferred dorsal ulnar flap for palmar region, cross-finger flap, side finger flap, and combined use of both for flexion contracture of the fingers, and rhomboid flap for web contractures. Eight patients having complex severe postburn hand contractures were treated between November 2001 and February 2005. The maximum improvements of the joint extensions were 75 degrees for medi

Numerous techniques are available for treating finger joint disorders such as osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis. Joint fusion and arthroplasty have different concepts but can improve hand function. Joint fusion is indicated in patients with painful finger joints with or without poor soft tissue condition. Implant arthroplasty is indicated for degenerative or inflammatory arthritis in elderly patients because implants may require future revision. Arthroplasty with an autologous osteochondral cartilage graft is an option for young patients with posttraumatic metacarpophalangeal or proxim

BACKGROUND: Mucous cyst of the distal interphalangeal joint (DMC) or interphalangeal connection of the thumb is common in middle-aged and elderly people, and it often occurs in the fingers of people with osteoarthritis (OA). Although there are many conservative treatments, DMC is usually treated by surgery. The common complications of surgical treatment are recurrence of DMC and skin necrosis. This article introduces the method and clinical effect of osteophyte excision and joint debridement in the treatment of DMC of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint.
METHODS: In total, 19 cases of affe

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of the free fibular skin flap of the great toe in repairing finger flexion deformity due to scar contracture.
METHODS: The clinical data of 12 patients with finger flexion deformity due to scar contracture treated with scar release and free fibular skin flap of the great toe between March 2022 and December 2024 was retrospectively analyzed. All patients had flexion deformity caused by scar contracture of finger joints after healing of skin defect scar. The duration of scar contracture ranged from 3 months to 2 years, with an average of 7 months. The

Seven cases of primary reconstruction of traumatic amputation of the thumb using the index finger are reported. In six cases, the reconstruction was done using an injured index finger, while in one case where the amputation of the thumb was through the carpometacarpal joint, an intact index finger was primarily pollicised. This reduces cost of treatment, hospitalisation period and allows earlier rehabilitation without a period of a 'no thumb experience'. We have followed all the patients for a minimum period of 2 years and all of them have excellent functional results. We believe that pollicis

UNLABELLED: Finger flexor tendinopathies and carpal tunnel syndrome are histologically characterised by non-inflammatory fibrosis of the subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT) in the carpal tunnel, which is indicative of excessive and repetitive shear forces between the finger flexor tendons and SSCT. We assessed flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) tendon and adjacent SSCT displacements with colour Doppler ultrasound as 16 healthy participants completed long finger flexion/extension movements captured by a motion capture system. FDS tendon displacements fit a second-order regression model based

The joints of the fingers play an important role in prehension. They must accomplish both great mobility in the sagittal plane to allow the fingers to roll up and great stability to ensure the grip is both precise and firm. The collateral ligaments and palmar plates are the main passive stabilizing structures between the interphalangeal (IP) and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. Sprains with or without dislocation of the proximal IP joints of the fingers are common injuries in sports pathology and may involve not only the ligaments but also their bony insertion on the phalanges or extensor ten

Adequate soft-tissue coverage is a cornerstone for successful hand reconstruction in burn patients allowing for hand mobilization and rehabilitation. Multiple finger injuries that involve separate soft-tissue defects with complex wounds challenge the reconstruction dilemma. In this case report, a modified application of reverse radial forearm flap for the simultaneous reconstruction of multiple separate finger defects for burn cases is presented. A 23-year-old heavy industry worker is presented with a history of third-degree electrical burn of left index and middle fingers. The proximal interp

BACKGROUND: An adequate range of motion (ROM) of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint is indispensable for fine motor skills of the hand. Reconstruction of extended skin and tendon loss of the distal phalanx is often challenging for surgeons and may lead to functional impairment of the injured finger. This article presents an option for a one-step functional and esthetical reconstruction of dorsal digital defects using combined island flaps.
METHODS: Vascularized tendons were harvested incorporated in reverse homodigital and heterodigital island flaps to treat skin and extensor tendon loss

Extensor tendon rupture of the finger is a very rare complication of Kienböck's disease. However, advanced Kienböck's disease can cause an attritional rupture of extensor tendons due to displaced lunate fragment. An extensor tendon of the thumb is frequently damaged in the distal radial fracture, and an extensor tendon of the fifth finger is mainly ruptured in arthritis of distal radio-ulnar joint. On the other hand, the extensor tendons of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers are usually ruptured in advanced Kienböck's disease. We report two elderly patients diagnosed with advanced Kienböck's disease

For obvious reasons, the use of flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) from the ring finger, for correction of finger-clawing, is usually not recommended in leprosy. Hence, one has to choose either index or middle finger FDS for correction of finger-clawing. No significant differences could be made out when follow-up data of claw-finger correction by modified lasso procedure, using FDS either from index or middle finger, were compared. In some hands post-operative problems, such as stiffness, superficialis minus deformities of proximal interphalangeal joints (PIPJ) and distal interphalangeal joi

Osteoarthritis of the fingers is an especially common condition in postmenopausal women. Many consider it a normal part of aging or a relatively minor disease. Osteoarthritis of the fingers is a disease process that destroys interphalangeal cartilage and results in pain, swelling, decreased finger motion, joint deformities, and difficulty performing activities that require grip or pinch. Medication, rest, and supportive splinting alternated with mobility and strengthening exercises, patient education, and incorporation of joint protection techniques may alleviate symptoms and improve functiona

The regional first web flap is a distally-based flap that is raised from the radiodorsal aspect of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the index finger towards the dorsal first web, and used to cover a thumb amputation. The advantage of this flap over the conventional cross-finger flap is that is gives a thicker and hairless flap with no skin graft to the donor site. Mobilisation of the joints, including the metacarpophalangeal joint of the index finger, can also be maintained during the immobilisation period between two stages.

We report our management of a 53-year-old female who suffered a wood planer hand-mutilating injury with significant dorsal soft tissue loss and partial metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) amputations of the thumb, index, and middle fingers. The middle finger was deconstructed for "spare parts" and a vascularized osteochondral graft was utilized to reconstruct the metacarpal articular surface of the index finger proximal phalanx, allowing the pedicled transposition of the index finger to the third metacarpal. The middle finger's distal interphalangeal joint was transplanted non-vascularly to recre

Surgical release of the A1 pulley for treatment of trigger finger normally produces excellent results. However, in patients with long-standing disease, there may be a persistent fixed flexion deformity of the proximal interphalangeal joint. This is sometimes due to a degenerative thickening of the flexor tendons and may be treated by resection of the ulnar slip of flexor digitorum superficialis tendon. One hundred seventy-two patients (228 fingers) who had undergone this procedure were reviewed at a mean follow-up of 66 months. Mean pre-operative fixed flexion deformity of the proximal interph
