BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of uterine dysfunction (endometrial hyperplasia) is on the rise. The available treatment is quite expensive and associated with some side effects. The therapeutic potential of natural products is now being explored, as they are easily available with little or no side effects. Drymaraia cordata is folklorically utilized in the treatment of diverse ailments including uterine fibroids.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the potential therapeutic effect of chloroform fraction of methanol extract of Drymaria cordata (CFDC) in estradiol benzoate (EB)-induced endome

BACKGROUND: Urtica simensis has been used for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease in Ethiopian folkloric medicine by drinking its juice after boiling the semicrushed leaf. To our latest understanding, no in vivo study was available regarding its antiulcer activity. The present study was done to appraise the ulcer-protective and ulcer healing activity of hydromethanolic crude extract of leaf of U. simensis in rats.
METHODS: Preliminary qualitative phytochemical screening and oral acute toxicity were carried out using a standard protocol. To validate U. simensis in vivo antiulcer potential py

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Several pathological disorders have been attributed to either oxidative stress or defect in apoptotic signaling pathway. Some bioactive compounds elicit their antiproliferative properties by induction of apoptosis via mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT) pore opening.
AIM OF STUDY: The present study therefore investigated the effects of various fractions of methanol extract of Ageratum conyzoides L. (MEAC) on mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis and the possible protective potential of the most potent against monosodium glutamate (MSG)-induced hepatic damage

Clausena excavata is a natural herb with both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used for decades in folkloric practice for the amelioration of various ailments. In this study, the gastroprotective activity of methanolic extract of C. excavata leaves (MECE) was determined in the Sprague Dawley rat ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model. Rats were pretreated with a single dose of vehicle (5% Tween 20), 20 mg/mL omeprazole, 400 and 200 mg/mL of MECE dissolved in 5% Tween 20. Ulcer was induced with 5 mL/kg of ethanol and stomach tissue was obtained after 1 hour. Histological e

This research established the scientific bases for the folkloric use of the neglected Dialium guineense fruit coat in wound and microbial infection management in Nigeria. The phytochemical analysis of the crude extract, fractions and sub-fractions was performed by standard methods. Agar well diffusion protocol was adopted for the antimicrobial assay while the wound healing properties was determined by full thickness skin excision wound model. Phytochemical analysis showed high relative proportion of alkaloids (6.05 ± 0.98 %), saponins (3.91 ± 0.02 %) and tannins (1.86 ± 0.05 %). The only activ

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an heterogenous, endocrine, metabolic, and multidisciplinary disorder of reproductive-aged females that aggravates insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, obesity, menstrual irregularities, and infertility. Bitter melon is consumed as vegetable in various parts of the world. The purpose of this study was to provide the rationale for the folkloric uses of bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) in reproductive abnormalities. HPLC analysis of standardized aqueous methanolic extract of bitter melon revealed the presence of various phytochemicals such as quercetin

BACKGROUND: Artemisia macrocephala Jacquem (A. macrocephala), locally known as "Tarkha", is a perennial plant found abundantly in northern areas of Pakistan. It is widely used in traditional medicine to treat fever, pain, gastrointestinal disorders and diabetes. Till date, no published studies are available regarding the in-vivo antinociceptive potential of the crude extract and sub-fractions from the aerial parts of A. macrocephala.
METHODS: Antinociceptive effects of the crude methanolic extract and its sub-fractions were assessed using experimental pain models, including chemical nocicepti

The plant Chenopodium opulifolium is traditionally consumed as a food and for treating ailments. Despite its use in Uganda for treating malaria, there are no scientific studies on its phytochemicals and biological potential to ascertain its folkloric claims. In this study, bioassay (antiplasmodial activity) – guided fractionation, isolation and identification of the phytoconstituents of the leaves of C. opulifolium were carried out. The identified compounds were further investigated via in silico docking to propose the mechanism of action of the extracts. The leaves were extracted sequentially

Inflammation, pain, and fever cause discomfort and misery and lower the productivity and quality of life among the victims. The severe effects of synthetic drugs used to treat these conditions necessitate the need for alternative therapeutic agents. Strychnos henningsii is used in folkloric medicine to manage inflammation, pain, and fever, although scientific evidence to validate these claims is lacking. This study aimed to determine the in vivo anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antipyretic potential of the methanol extract of S. henningsii. In the anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and

Cistus parviflorus L. (Cistaceae) is a medicinal plant with several folkloric applications, including being used for urinary tract infections and as a food additive. In this study, the polyphenolic diversity and the antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial activities of the C. parviflorus methanolic extract were evaluated. Spectrophotometric and HPLC-based analyses using standard polyphenolic compounds were conducted to measure the phenolics and flavonoids in the plant extract. The in vitro DPPH, ORAC, FRAP, and α-glucosidase assays were used to evaluate the plant's antioxidant and antidia

BACKGROUND: The root bark of Carissa spinarum Linn. (Apocynaceae) is claimed to be used for the management of depression in Ethiopian folkloric medicine, and the crude extract has been reported to possess antidepressant-like activity in rodents.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the antidepressant-like effect of different fractions of the root bark in rodents and the possible underlying mechanisms in rats.
METHODS: A 70% ethanol extract of the root bark was successively fractionated with n-butanol, ethyl acetate, and water. Animals of both sexes received 2% Tween 80, imipramine (30 mg/

Artemisia jordanica (AJ) is one of the folkloric medicinal plants and grows in the arid condition used by Palestinian Bedouins in the Al-Naqab desert for the treatment of diabetes and gastrointestinal infections. The current investigation aimed, for the first time, to characterize the (AJ) essential oil (EO) components and evaluate EO's antioxidant, anti-obesity, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic activities. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) technique was utilized to characterize the chemical ingredients of (AJ) EO, while validated biochemical approac

INTRODUCTION: Diarrheal diseases are associated with an estimated 1.3 million deaths annually, with most occurring in resource-limited countries; up to 25% of deaths in young children living in Africa and southeast Asia are attributable to acute gastroenteritis. Due to limitations associated with various treatments available, the need for developing newer drugs is imperative.
OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to evaluate the antidiarrheal activity of root extract and fractions of C. abyssinica Jaub. & Spach. (Euphorbiaceae) in mice.
METHODS: After plant extraction and subsequent fractionation
