Otoneurological expert system for vertigo.

We have developed an otoneurological expert system (ONE) to aid the diagnostics of vertigo, to assist teaching and to implement a database for research. The ONE database is set to harvest data on patient history, signs and test results necessary for diagnostic work with vertiginous patients. A method based on pattern recognition was used in the reasoning process. Questions about symptoms, signs and test results are weighted and scored for each disease and the most likely disease is recognized from defined disease profiles. Missing information and uncertainties are solved with a method resembli

A semi-supervised deep neuro-fuzzy iterative learning system for automatic segmentation of hippocampus brain MRI.

The hippocampus is a small, yet intricate seahorse-shaped tiny structure located deep within the brain's medial temporal lobe. It is a crucial component of the limbic system, which is responsible for regulating emotions, memory, and spatial navigation. This research focuses on automatic hippocampus segmentation from Magnetic Resonance (MR) images of a human head with high accuracy and fewer false positive and false negative rates. This segmentation technique is significantly faster than the manual segmentation methods used in clinics. Unlike the existing approaches such as UNet and Convolution

A novel lightweight deep learning approach for simultaneous optic cup and optic disc segmentation in glaucoma detection.

Glaucoma is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that can result in irreversible vision loss if not treated in its early stages. The cup-to-disc ratio is a key criterion for glaucoma screening and diagnosis, and it is determined by dividing the area of the optic cup (OC) by that of the optic disc (OD) in fundus images. Consequently, the automatic and accurate segmentation of the OC and OD is a pivotal step in glaucoma detection. In recent years, numerous methods have resulted in great success on this task. However, most existing methods either have unsatisfactory segmentation accuracy or high t

Predicting Post-Concussion Symptom Recovery in Adolescents Using a Novel Artificial Intelligence.

This pilot study explores the possibility of predicting post-concussion symptom recovery at one week post-injury using only objective diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data inputs to a novel artificial intelligence (AI) system composed of Genetic Fuzzy Trees (GFT). Forty-three adolescents age 11 to 16 years with either mild traumatic brain injury or traumatic orthopedic injury were enrolled on presentation to the emergency department. Participants received a DTI scan three days post-injury, and their symptoms were assessed by the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS) at 6 h and one week post-injur

A Segmentation Algorithm for Quantitative Analysis of Heterogeneous Tumors of the Cervix With ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT.

As positron-emission tomography (PET) images have low spatial resolution and much noise, accurate image segmentation is one of the most challenging issues in tumor quantification. Tumors of the uterine cervix present a particular challenge because of urine activity in the adjacent bladder. Here, we propose and validate an automatic segmentation method adapted to cervical tumors. Our proposed methodology combined the gradient field information of both the filtered PET image and the level set function into a level set framework by constructing a new evolution equation. Furthermore, we also const

Advanced biofeedback from surface electromyography signals using fuzzy system.

The aims of this study were to develop a fuzzy inference-based biofeedback system and investigate its effects when inducing active (shoulder elevation) and passive (relax) pauses on the trapezius muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity during computer work. Surface EMG signals were recorded from clavicular, descending (bilateral) and ascending parts of the trapezius muscles during computer work. The fuzzy system readjusted itself based on the history of previous inputs. The effect of feedback was assessed in terms of muscle activation regularity and amplitude. Active pause resulted in non-unif

Application of nonlinear methods to discriminate fractionated electrograms in paroxysmal versus persistent atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Complex fractionated atrial electrograms (CFAE) may contain information concerning the electrophysiological substrate of atrial fibrillation (AF); therefore they are of interest to guide catheter ablation treatment of AF. Electrogram signals are shaped by activation events, which are dynamical in nature. This makes it difficult to establish those signal properties that can provide insight into the ablation site location. Nonlinear measures may improve information. To test this hypothesis, we used nonlinear measures to analyze CFAE. METHODS: CFAE from several atrial s

Mammogram Enhancement Using Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional mammogram enhancement methods use transform-domain filtering, which possibly produce some artifacts or not well highlight all local details in images. This paper presents a new enhancement method based on intuitionistic fuzzy sets. METHODS: The presented algorithm initially separates a mammogram via a global threshold and then fuzzifies the image utilizing the intuitionistic fuzzy membership function that adopts restricted equivalence functions. After that, the presented scheme hyperbolizes membership degrees of foreground and background areas, defuzzifies the fuzzy pl

A similarity function to evaluate the orthodontic condition in patients with cleft lip and palate.

The objective of this work is the modeling of a similarity function adapted to the medical environment using the logical-combinatorial approach of pattern recognition theory, and its application to compare the orthodontic conditions of patients with cleft-primary palate and/or cleft-secondary palate congenital malformations. The variables in domains with no a priori algebraic or topological structure are objects whose similarity or difference is evaluated by comparison criteria functions. The range of these functions is an ordered set normalized into the unit interval, and they are designed to

Semi-supervised learning towards automated segmentation of PET images with limited annotations: application to lymphoma patients.

Manual segmentation poses a time-consuming challenge for disease quantification, therapy evaluation, treatment planning, and outcome prediction. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) hold promise in accurately identifying tumor locations and boundaries in PET scans. However, a major hurdle is the extensive amount of supervised and annotated data necessary for training. To overcome this limitation, this study explores semi-supervised approaches utilizing unlabeled data, specifically focusing on PET images of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (PMB

A fuzzy rule-based approach for characterization of mammogram masses into BI-RADS shape categories.

We present new geometric shape and margin features for classifying mammogram mass lesions into BI-RADS shape categories: round, oval, lobular and irregular. According to Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BIRADS), masses can be differentiated using its shape, size and density, which is how radiologist visualizes the mammograms. Measuring regular and irregular shapes mathematically is found to be a difficult task, since there is no single measure available to differentiate various shapes. It is known that for mammograms, shape features are superior to Haralick and wavelet based features.
