Natural Antioxidant Compounds as Potential Pharmaceutical Tools against Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Natural antioxidants are a very large diversified family of molecules classified by activity (enzymatic or nonenzymatic), chemical-physical properties (e.g., hydrophilic or lipophilic), and chemical structure (e.g., vitamins, polyphenols, etc.). Research on natural antioxidants in various fields, such as pharmaceutics, nutraceutics, and cosmetics, is among the biggest challenges for industry and science. From a biomedical point of view, the scavenging activity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) makes them a potential tool for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's dise

[Determination of ginkgolic acids in Ginkgo biloba leaves by gas chromatography with on-line pyrolytic methylation].

A method to determine ginkgolic acids in Ginkgo biloba leaves was developed on the basis of pyrolytic methylation-gas chromatography. Pyrolytic methylation of G. biloba leaves in the injector at 300 degrees C in the presence of an organic alkali, tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH, 25% methanol), allowed quantitative analysis of ginkgolic acids as their corresponding methyl derivatives. On the basis of the relative areas of these peaks, chemical composition of the ginkgolic acids in G. biloba leaves was determined with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 3.4% (n = 3). The calibr

Role of nutraceuticals on neurodegenerative diseases: neuroprotective and immunomodulant activity.

Neurodegeneration is a degenerative process characterized by the progressive loss of the structure and function of neurons that involves several immune cells. It is the primary cause of dementia and other several syndromes, known as neurodegenerative diseases. These disorders are age-related and it is estimated that by 2040 there will be approximately 81.1 million people suffering from these diseases. In addition to the traditional pharmacological therapy, in recent years nutraceuticals, naturally based compounds with a broad spectrum of biological effects: anti-aging, antioxidants, hypoglycae

Combinative effect of pulsed-light irradiation and solid-state fermentation on ginkgolic acids, ginkgols, ginkgolides, bilobalide, flavonoids, product quality and sensory assessment of Ginkgo biloba dark tea.

Pulsed light (PL) is a prospective non-thermal technology that can improve the degradation of ginkgolic acid (GA) and retain the main bioactive compounds in Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBL). However, only using PL hasn't yet achieved the ideal effect of reducing GA. Fermentation of GBL to make ginkgo dark tea (GDT) could decrease GA. Because different microbial strains are used for fermentation, their metabolites and product quality might differ. However, there is no research on the combinative effect of PL irradiation fixation and microbial strain fermentation on main bioactive compounds and sensor

In vitro susceptibility of Helicobacter pylori to botanical extracts used traditionally for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.

The gram-negative bacterium Helicobacter pylori (HP), identified in 1982, is now recognized as the primary etiological factor associated with the development of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. In addition, HP infections are also associated with chronic gastritis, gastric carcinoma and primary gastric B-cell lymphoma. For centuries, herbals have been used in traditional medicine to treat a wide range of ailments, including gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as dyspepsia, gastritis and peptic ulcer disease (PUD). However, the mechanism of action by which these botanicals exert their therap

Reversed-phase argentation high-performance liquid chromatography in phytochemical analysis of ginkgolic acids in leaves from Ginkgo biloba L.

A reversed-phase argentation high-performance liquid chromatographic method has been achieved for the determination of ginkgolic acids. Liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry in the negative ion mode is applied to identify ginkgolic acids from ginkgo leaves. The leaves are extracted with ethanol and then cleaned-up by extraction of analytes with hexane after addition of an acidified saturated solution of sodium sulfate and siliceous earth to the matrix solution. Ginkgolic acids are determined within 30 min on a C18 column with methanol-5% aqueous ace

Thermal fixation technologies affect phenolic profile, ginkgolides, bilobalide, product quality, and ginkgolic acids in Ginkgo biloba leaf tea.

Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBLs) contain high phytoconstituents, but ginkgolic acids (GAs, the main toxic compound in GBLs) have limited its applications. Processing Ginkgo biloba dark tea (GBDT) using fixation technology could decrease the toxic compounds; retain flavonoids, ginkgolides, and bilobalide; and improve the product quality. For the first time, various thermal fixations (hot air fixation [HAF], iron pot fixation [IPF], and boiled water fixation [BWF]) followed by rolling, fermentation, and drying were applied to produce GBDT. A comprehensive analysis of the toxicants (GAs), main bioacti

Hypoxia-induced apoptosis of cardiomyocytes is restricted by ginkgolide B-downregulated microRNA-29.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Ginkgolide B exerts a cardioprotective function against ischemia-caused apoptosis in myocardial infarction. Here we sought out to address a functional mechanism associated with microRNA-29 (miR-29). Rat cardiomyocytes (H9c2 cells) were cultured in ginkgolide B-conditioned medium prior to hypoxic induction. To construct miR-29-overexpressed cells, miR-29 mimic was transfected into H9c2 cells. The cells were harvested for assaying survivability and apoptosis by CCK-8 and FITC-Annexin V staining methods. Western blot was applied to identify apoptotic hallmarks and signaling transducers. Medicinal plants in mitigating electromagnetic radiation-induced neuronal damage: a concise review.

Although the evidence is inconclusive, epidemiological studies strongly suggest that increased exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) increases the risk of brain tumors, parotid gland tumors, and seminoma. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified mobile phone radiofrequency radiation as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). Humans being are inadvertently being exposed to EMR as its prevalence increases, mainly through mobile phones. Radiation exposure is unavoidable in the current context, with mobile phones being an inevitable necessity. Prudent usage o

Enzymatic degradation of ginkgolic acids by laccase immobilized on core/shell Fe3O4/nylon composite nanoparticles using novel coaxial electrospraying process.

Enzyme immobilization can increase enzyme reusability to reduce cost of industrial production. Ginkgo biloba leaf extract is commonly used for medical purposes, but it contains ginkgolic acid, which has negative effects on human health. Here, we report a novel approach to solve the problem by degrading the ginkgolic acid with immobilized-laccase, where core/shell composite nanoparticles prepared by coaxial electrospraying might be first applied to enzyme immobilization. The core/shell Fe3O4/nylon 6,6 composite nanoparticles (FNCNs) were prepared using one-step coaxial electrospraying and can b

Metals analysis of botanical products in various matrices using a single microwave digestion and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) method.

Presented here is the development and validation of a simple and singular sample preparation method for the detection of heavy metals (i.e. arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury) and other elements (i.e. iron, sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and zinc) in botanical products by microwave digestion and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). This one methodology is successfully applied to botanical samples existing in three very different forms; powdered raw material, liquid phyto-caps (i.e. glycerin-based matrices) and ethanolic tinctures. Method validation results were ob

Pharmacological Mechanisms of Active Constituents from Traditional Chinese Medicine for Vitiligo Treatment.

Vitiligo is a chronic acquired depigmenting disorder characterized by progressive melanocyte loss. Its pathogenesis involves a multifactorial interplay among oxidative stress, impaired melanocyte regeneration, immune-mediated cytotoxicity, and neuroendocrine dysregulation. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)-derived active ingredients have attracted increasing research interest as potential interventions for vitiligo, although most isolated compounds remain at the preclinical stage. This review summarizes pharmacological and natural compounds applied in vitiligo treatment and h

Cellulose-lignin wound patch on Janus textile support for dual tissue regeneration and antibacterial action in cutaneous leishmaniasis wounds.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by Leishmania parasites and the most common form is known as cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) causing non-healing lesions and ulcers and making the already immunocompromised patients more vulnerable to other infections. Secondary bacterial infections and excess inflammation within the wound area are two critical factors that negatively impact CL wound healing. An optimal wound dressing should address these issues and contribute to the acceleration of wound closure even in a limited clinical setting. Sugar-cane bagasse derived cellulose:lig
