Lead isotopes in silver reveal earliest Phoenician quest for metals in the west Mediterranean.

When and why did the Phoenicians initiate long-term connections between the Levant and western Europe? This is one of the most hotly debated questions in ancient Mediterranean history and cultural research. In this study, we use silver to answer this question, presenting the largest dataset of chemical and isotopic analyses of silver items from silver hoards found in Phoenician homeland sites. Intertwining lead isotope analysis of silver items with precise archaeological context and chronology, we provide analytical evidence for the onset of Phoenician westward expansion. We suggest that the q

Homeostasis in anorexia nervosa.

Brainstem and hypothalamic "orexigenic/anorexigenic" networks are thought to maintain body weight homeostasis in response to hormonal and metabolic feedback from peripheral sites. This approach has not been successful in managing over- and underweight patients. It is suggested that concept of homeostasis has been misinterpreted; rather than exerting control, the brain permits eating in proportion to the amount of physical activity necessary to obtain food. In support, animal experiments have shown that while a hypothalamic "orexigen" excites eating when food is abundant, it inhibits eating and

Factor analysis of symptom subtypes of obsessive compulsive disorder and their relation to personality and tic disorders.

Despite advances in our understanding of the pathology and genetics of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and in our ability to successfully treat patients with medications and behavioral psychotherapy, the identification of homogeneous subgroups of patients with OCD has remained elusive. Once identified, such subgroups may be found related to treatment response, biological markers, or genetic transmission of OCD. To clarify identification of symptom subtypes, my colleagues and I administered the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) Symptom Checklist to 107 patients with OCD and app

Repetitive behaviors in chronically institutionalized schizophrenic patients.

Repetitive dysfunctional behaviors (e.g., polydipsia, bulimia, hoarding, mannerisms) are frequently observed in chronically institutionalized schizophrenics, cause significant morbidity and are readily reproduced in animal models. The goal of this study was to assess the frequency and severity of these behaviors. Thirty-two chronic schizophrenics on an extended treatment unit were rated on the Elgin Behavioral Rating Scale, which includes eight repetitive behaviors and eight positive and negative symptoms. Forty-seven percent of the patients exhibited at least one severe, or 2 moderate, repeti

Gender differences in obsessive-compulsive disorder: Findings from a multicentric study from India.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is phenotypically heterogeneous. Gender is an important factor mediating this heterogeneity. We examined gender differences in a large sample (n = 945) of OCD patients under a multi-centric study in India. Cross-sectional assessments were done on consecutive adult (>18 years) treatment-seeking patients with a DSM-5 diagnosis of OCD. Subjects were assessed on Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5-Research Version for comorbid psychiatric illnesses, Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale for OCD phenomenology and symptom severity, Brown Assessment of Beliefs

[Cyclothymic obsessive-compulsive disorder. Clinical characteristics of a neglected and under-recognized entity].

OBJECTIVE: Clinical research is largely focused on depressive comorbidity in obsessional compulsive disorder (OCD). However some recent publications have suggested that bipolar comorbidity occurs in authentic OCD and its presence has a differential impact on the clinical picture and course of OCD. METHOD: Recent data from the collaborative survey conducted with AFTOC (French Association of patients suffering from OCD) have revealed a high rate of bipolar comorbidity in OCD: 30% for hypomania and 50% for cyclothymia. RESULTS: The present paper presents further comparative analyses between OCD

Evaluation of cognitive disengagement syndrome in children with obsessive-compulsive disorder: Clinical implications.

Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS) has been found to be associated with internalizing symptoms. Yet, no study thus far has focused on whether there is an association between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and CDS. The purpose of this study is to examine the symptom frequency and clinical implications of CDS in children with OCD. The study included sixty-one children with OCD and sixty-six typically developing children. Children were evaluated by a semi-constructed diagnosis interview, Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory, Barkley Child Attention Scale, and Stroop test. The frequency of elev

The relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder symptom subtypes and social adjustment.

BACKGROUND: Although it has been widely established that poor social functioning is a characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), little research has examined the relationship between OCD symptom subtypes and domains of social functioning. Thus, the present study sought to examine the specific ways in which impairment in social adjustment occurs in each symptom subtype of OCD. METHODS: A total of 325 adult participants with a primary diagnosis of OCD were included in the study. Hierarchical linear regressions were used to compare the extent to which OCD symptom subtypes predicted s

Why Chitosan? From properties to perspective of mucosal drug delivery.

Non-parenteral drug delivery routes primarily remove the local pain at the injection site. The drugs administered through the oral route encounter the process of hepatic first pass metabolism. Among the alternative delivery routes, mucosal route is being investigated as the most preferred route. Different mucosal routes include the gastrointestinal tract (oral), vagina, buccal cavity and nasal cavity. Novel formulations are being developed using natural and synthetic polymers that could increase the residence time of the drug at mucosal surface in order to facilitate permeation and reduce (or

Forced collectionism after orbitofrontal damage.

A collector is a person who collects things on purpose, either as a hobby or business, or for personal satisfaction, e.g., stamp, coin, or art collector. In such instances, the act of collecting things represents voluntary, controlled, goal-directed, selective searching. Pathologic patterns of collecting have been observed following brain damage, particularly frontal lobe damage, ranging from a tendency to grasp (prehension behavior) to an irrepressible need to seize surrounding objects and store them (hoarding behavior). These adnormal behaviors express an excessive adherence to environmental

Multifunctional Immunomodulatory Hydrogel With Bacterial Capture Properties, Intelligently Exhibited Viscous or Elastic Properties and On-Demand Removal Properties for the Treatment of Bacterially Infected Irregular Chronic Wound Healing.

Bacterial infections can trigger disturbances in the wound's internal environment and overstimulate the inflammatory stress response, causing the formation of chronic wounds and even tricky complications. However, irregular wounds with intricate crevices are prone to hoarding tissue exudate and colonising bacteria. This creates unnecessary headaches for patients and the healthcare system. Herein, a multifunctional immunomodulatory hydrogel for the healing of irregular chronic wounds with bacterial infections is developed. The system, based on the reversible fracture-restructuring property of d

Epigenetics in Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 1 in 20,000 individuals worldwide. Symptom progression in PWS is classically characterized by two nutritional stages. Stage 1 is hypotonia characterized by poor muscle tone that leads to poor feeding behavior causing failure to thrive in early neonatal life. Stage 2 is followed by the development of extreme hyperphagia, also known as insatiable eating and fixation on food that often leads to obesity in early childhood. Other major features of PWS include obsessive-compulsive and hoarding behaviors, int

What Have We Learned About the Genetics of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders in Recent Years?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex, multifactorial disorder with onset in either childhood or early adulthood. Lifetime prevalence has been estimated to be around 2%-3%. DSM-5 groups OCD together with closely related disorders-body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder), hoarding disorder, and excoriation disorder (skin-picking disorder)-as obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs). In addition, DSM-5 includes a "tic-related" specifier, recognizing that OCD and Tourette syndrome/chronic tics are frequently comorbid. In recent years, the first large

A novel tool showing that perceptions of adverse social relationships in childhood were linked with mental health problems and suicidal experiences: Validation of the English version of the History of Social Punishment (HoSP) scale.

There is robust evidence for relationships between adverse events experienced in childhood and mental health problems experienced as an adult. However, the measurement of perceptions of different types of adverse relationships in childhood, especially those that are in social contexts, is lacking. Given the absence of an appropriate tool to measure perceptions of adverse social relationships in childhood within English-speaking populations, we endeavored to examine the construct validity of the English version of the History of Social Punishment (HoSP) scale. In total, 557 adults from the exta

In the name of immunity, for the sake of the sacred: An analysis of the Iranian government's response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Iran was heavily affected by COVID-19 and faced a delayed, uneven vaccine rollout. While global vaccine hoarding constrained access, the delay also reflected an immunitarian decision by the Supreme Leader to ban US- and UK-produced vaccines. Using Walt and Gilson's Health Policy Analysis (HPA), I examine Iran's early COVID-19 response, tracing how context, content, process, and actors shaped vaccine governance and outcomes. I compare deaths per 100,000 from the World Health Organization (WHO) with eight peer countries benchmarked by income group and vaccine portfolio. Adjusting for GDP per cap

Limited evidence that reputation-based partner choice facilitates information sharing in humans.

A necessary prerequisite for the accumulation of beneficial knowledge, or 'cumulative cultural evolution', is the sharing of information via social learning. Yet little work in the field of cultural evolution has examined the mechanisms that support information sharing in the face of exploitative information free-riding and information hoarding. We ran a series of online interactive experiments (N = 716) combined with computational reinforcement and social learning models to test whether the mechanism of reputation-based partner choice can effectively support information sharing. Participants

Comparison of eco-directed and health-focused brief awareness-raising interventions for enhancing active participation of community residents in drug take-back program.

Drug take-back system provides a legal, safe and eco-friendly avenue to appropriately dispose of unwanted medicines, contributing to both environmental sustainability and reducing medication misuse. This study designed and implemented a brief educational intervention, which took <1 min on average, to enhance awareness of community residents regarding the dangers of hoarding and improperly disposing of expired and unused medication at home. In a Chinese urban community, 104 eligible households were evenly assigned into 2 groups receiving leaflet-based awareness-raising interventions. Messages a

Universal personality dimensions and dysfunctional obsessional beliefs in the DSM-5's OCD and related disorders (OCRDs).

This study aimed to determine the extent to which personality and cognitive factors contribute to the identification of shared associations between the DSM-5's OCD and Related Disorders (OCRDs). Participants (n = 239) were treatment-seeking outpatients with a principal diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), hoarding disorder (HD), trichotillomania (TTM), or excoriation disorder (EXC), as compared to healthy community controls (n = 100). Analyses examined the relationships between diagnostic group, personality dimensions, and obsessive beliefs. Results

Involvement of fear, incompleteness, and disgust during symptoms of pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Fear has been assigned a central role in models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but empirical investigations into the emotions that underpin OCD symptoms are few, especially in pediatric samples. Using validated, clinician-led structured interviews, 124 youth with OCD reported on the presence and severity of symptoms across the main symptom dimensions of OCD (aggressive, symmetry, contamination) and the degree to which fear, incompleteness, and disgust accompanied these symptoms. For comparison purposes, the degree of fear, incompleteness, and disgust during symptoms was obtained also

Factor analysis of symptom profile in early onset and late onset OCD.

This study aimed to assess the factor structure of early and late onset OCD. Additionally, cluster analysis was conducted in the same sample to assess the applicability of the factors. 345 participants were assessed with Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale symptom checklist. Patients were classified as early onset (onset of symptoms at age ≤ 18 years) and late onset (onset at age > 18 years) OCD depending upon the age of onset of the symptoms. Factor analysis and cluster analysis of early-onset and late-onset OCD was conducted. The study sample comprised of 91 early onset and 245 late onset
