External resilience in the context of drug use and socio-structural vulnerabilities: a qualitative exploration among women who use drugs and sell sex in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Resilience is a commonly used construct in substance use and mental health research. Yet it is often narrowly defined by only its internal qualities (e.g., adaptability, hardiness) and overlooks its external qualities (e.g., supportive relationships, navigating one's environment). Further, substance use is often viewed as antithetical to resilience despite populations like women who use drugs and sell sex (WWUD-SS) surviving significant hardships. This study aims to fill a gap in the literature by characterizing external resilience among WWUD-SS and understanding the ways that soci

Systemic granulomatous and haemorrhagic syndrome in New Zealand dairy cattle.

CASE HISTORY: Cases were obtained through passive surveillance reporting by veterinary pathologists, via the Ministry for Primary Industries Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline. They included ill or dead cows that had evidence of frank haemorrhage, petechial haemorrhages on mucous membranes, wasting or dermatitis of unknown cause, and were reported between 2009-2014. Affected cows (n=16) were from nine seasonally calving dairy farms, aged ≥3 years, and were predominantly in their mid-to-late non-lactating period. A brassica crop was identified in 15/16 cases as part of the current or recent ration

Malaria surveillance--United States, 2012.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Malaria in humans is caused by intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. These parasites are transmitted by the bite of an infective female Anopheles mosquito. The majority of malaria infections in the United States occur among persons who have traveled to regions with ongoing malaria transmission. However, malaria is also occasionally acquired by persons who have not traveled out of the country, through exposure to infected blood products, congenital transmission, laboratory exposure, or local mosquitoborne transmission. Malaria surveillance in the United States i

Gambling behavior and problems among older adults: a systematic review of empirical studies.

OBJECTIVES: With the rapid aging of the population and the increased availability of gambling facilities over the past three decades, older adults may gamble more and may be increasingly at risk for problem gambling (PG) or pathological gambling disorder (PGD). To facilitate a better understanding of gambling behavior among older adults that will inform preventive strategies, this article systematically examined empirical studies on issues related to older adults' gambling. METHOD: This article reviewed 75 empirical studies including data on the distribution and determinants of PG and PGD and

Barriers and facilitators influencing call center nurses' decision support for callers facing values-sensitive decisions: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Call center nurses triage symptoms and provide health information. However, information alone is not adequate for people facing values-sensitive health decisions. For these decisions, effective interventions are evidence-based patient decision aids and in-person nurse coaching using a structured process. Little is known about the quality of decision support provided by call center nurses. AIMS: To identify the barriers and facilitators influencing the provision of decision support by call center nurses to callers facing values-sensitive health decisions at a Canadian province-wide

American Cancer Society's Breast Cancer Detection Awareness Program: the 1988 middle Tennessee experience.

In an effort to augment public awareness of the benefits of screening mammography and to encourage the use of screening mammograms, the Tennessee Division of the American Cancer Society initiated the Breast Cancer Detection Awareness Program in March 1988. As a result of the initiative, 3,473 women telephoned for information, and 3,123 were found to be eligible for a screening mammogram. Of the 2,248 mammograms actually obtained, 1,764 (78%) were interpreted as normal, whereas 484 (22%) were classified as abnormal. Of the 484 women with abnormal mammograms, 277 (57%) were advised to have follo

Psychological symptoms, comorbidities and symptom items associated with self-reported mental health needs in college students.

BACKGROUND: College students are increasingly experiencing psychological distress, which adversely affects their academic performance, social functioning, and overall quality of life. While many studies have investigated the prevalence and correlates of psychological symptoms in this population, fewer have explored how psychological symptoms and their co-occurrence relate to self-reported mental health service needs. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 22,624 college students to explore the complex relationships between various psychological symptoms and their implications

Effects of a Province-wide Triaging System for TIA: The ASPIRE Intervention.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Urgent transient ischemic attack (TIA) management to reduce stroke recurrence is challenging, particularly in rural and remote areas. In Alberta, Canada, despite an organized stroke system, data from 1999 to 2000 suggested that stroke recurrence after TIA was as high as 9.5% at 90 days. Our objective was to determine whether a multifaceted population-based intervention resulted in a reduction in recurrent stroke after TIA. METHODS: In this quasi-experimental health services research intervention study, we implemented a TIA management algorithm across the entire prov

Poisoning due to household products: A ten years retrospective analysis of telephone calls to the National Poisons Information Centre, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India.

Extensive use of different chemicals in various fields and their easy availability has led to an increased incidence of accidental and intentional poisoning in developing countries including India. A diverse range of household products commonly used for domestic purposes comprise pesticides, household cleaners, thermometer mercury, antiseptics, kerosene, paint thinners etc. Any of these products, if misused or mishandled can cause poisoning. In India, the National Poisons Centre (NPIC) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, provides information on management of poisoning to

Chronic infections of West Nile virus detected in California dead birds.

During 2010 and 2011, 933 recently deceased birds, submitted as part of the dead bird surveillance program, tested positive for West Nile virus RNA at necropsy. The relative amount of RNA measured by qRT-PCR cycles ranged from 8.2 to 37.0 cycle threshold (Ct) and formed a bimodal frequency distribution, with maxima at 20 and 36 Ct and minima at 28-30 Ct. On the basis of frequency distributions among different avian species with different responses to infection following experimental inoculation, field serological data indicating survival of infection, and the discovery of persistent RNA in exp

Strategies to help a smoker who is struggling to quit.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. Stopping tobacco use benefits virtually every smoker. Most of the 19% of US residents who smoke want to quit and have tried to do so. Most individual quit attempts fail, but two-thirds of smokers use no treatment when trying to quit. Treating tobacco dependence is one of the most cost-effective actions in health care. With a brief intervention, physicians can prompt smokers to attempt to quit and connect them to evidence-based treatment that includes pharmacotherapy and behavioral support (ie, counseling). Physicians can link smo
