Intelligent Monitoring System of Migratory Pests Based on Searchlight Trap and Machine Vision.

Three species of rice migratory pests (Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, Sogatella furcifera, and Nilaparvata lugens) cause severe yield and economic losses to rice food every year. It is important that these pests are timely and accurately monitored for controlling them and ensuring food security. Insect radar is effective monitoring equipment for migratory pests flying at high altitude. But insect radar is costly and has not been widely used in fields. Searchlight trap is an economical device, which uses light to trap migratory pests at high altitude. But the trapped pests need to be manually identi

Hindgut microbiota in laboratory-reared and wild Triatoma infestans.

Triatomine vectors transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease in humans. Transmission to humans typically occurs when contaminated triatomine feces come in contact with the bite site or mucosal membranes. In the Southern Cone of South America, where the highest burden of disease exists, Triatoma infestans is the principal vector for T. cruzi. Recent studies of other vector-borne illnesses have shown that arthropod microbiota influences the ability of infectious agents to colonize the insect vector and transmit to the human host. This has garnered attention as a potenti

Co-Toxicity Factor Analysis Reveals Numerous Plant Essential Oils Are Synergists of Natural Pyrethrins against Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes.

With insecticide-resistant mosquito populations becoming an ever-growing concern, new vector control technologies are needed. With the lack of new chemical classes of insecticides to control mosquito populations, the development of novel synergists may improve the performance of available insecticides. We screened a set of 20 plant essential oils alone and in combination with natural pyrethrins against Aedes aegypti (Orlando) female adult mosquitoes to assess their ability to synergize this natural insecticide. A co-toxicity factor analysis was used to identify whether plant oils modulated the

Optimization of Slash and Clear Community-Directed Control of Simulium damnosum Sensu Stricto in Northern Uganda.

Onchocerciasis, caused by infection with Onchocerca volvulus, has been targeted for elimination by 2030. Currently, onchocerciasis elimination programs rely primarily on mass distribution of ivermectin. However, ivermectin alone may not be sufficient to achieve elimination in some circumstances, and additional tools may be needed. Vector control has been used as a tool to control onchocerciasis, but vector control using insecticides is expensive and ecologically detrimental. Community-directed removal of the trailing vegetation black fly larval attachment sites (slash and clear) has been shown

Controlling phlebotomine sand flies to prevent canine Leishmania infantum infection: A case of knowing your enemy.

Leishmaniosis caused by Leishmania infantum is a widespread zoonotic disease that can be transmitted to animals and humans by their vectors, blood-sucking phlebotomine sand flies. To prevent canine leishmaniosis across the whole Mediterranean region, vector control is essential. Because of phlebotomine breeding sites are diverse, environmental larval controls have limited practical value. Control methods of adults are being evaluated, such as selective baits based on sugar feeding of males and females or Attractive Toxic Sugar Baits (ATSB), and the indoor use of Long-Lasting-Insecticidal Nets

Kissing bugs. The vectors of Chagas.

A complete picture of Chagas disease requires an appreciation of the many species of kissing bugs and their role in transmitting this disease to humans and other mammals. This chapter provides an overview of the taxonomy of the major species of kissing bugs and their evolution. Knowledge of systematics and biological kinship of these insects may contribute to novel and useful measures to control the bugs. The biology of kissing bugs, their life cycle, method of feeding and other behaviours contributing to the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi are explained. We close with a discussion of vector

Entomological aspects of the first five years of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in the Volta River Basin.

The history and structure of the WHO Onchocerciasis Control Programme in the Volta River Basin are described. An outline of the vector control operations is given, and the techniques and organisation of the entomological evaluation network are described in detail. During the course of the evaluation and related studies undertaken between November 1974 and October 1978 almost 1.2 million S. damnosum females have been taken in over 52,000 man days of catching, and 674,000 flies were dissected. An assessment based on this effort using Annual Biting Rates and Annual Transmission Potentials shows t

Decomposition of partially submerged remains: a study on the reliability of insect colonisation for PMI/PMSI estimation.

The terrestrial decomposition of remains and associated insect colonisation have been highly researched, and recently studies have expanded to investigate the aquatic decomposition of remains. However, there are instances where remains may experience both terrestrial and aquatic conditions simultaneously due to partial submersion in tidal areas, or influx or efflux of water caused by flood or drought. Decomposition and post-mortem interval (PMI) research to date has focused on remains wholly exposed to either terrestrial or aquatic environments, with limited consideration of dual simultaneous

RNAi assay in the 28-spotted ladybeetle Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata suggests nuclear receptor HR3 as a potential molecular target for pest control.

BACKGROUND: Nuclear hormone receptors play crucial roles in embryonic development, neural regulation, metabolism, and organogenesis in insects. This study aimed to investigate the expression and function of the nuclear hormone receptor 3 (HR3) in the 28-spotted ladybeetle, Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata. RESULTS: Our findings revealed that HvHR3 was expressed at all developmental stages, with the highest expression levels in the 1st instar larvae, 3rd instar larvae, and pupa. HvHR3 silencing in both the 1st and 3rd instar larvae resulted in high mortality rates. Reduced HvHR3 expression i

Community-based surveillance of Chagas Disease: Characterization and use of Triatomine Information Posts (TIPs) in a high-risk area for triatomine reinfestation in Latin America.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, vector surveillance with public participation is a prioritized action in the primary prevention of Chagas Disease (CD). It is anchored in the implementation of Triatomine Information Posts (TIPs), spaces recognized by health surveillance for receiving insects suspected of being triatomines. For the first time in the scientific literature, a study is dedicated to characterizing TIPs operationally, structurally, and functionally, as well as understanding the factors that hinder their sustainability. METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted in one of the most vulnerable region

The "Gredouno" Cross Target: a new tool adapted to control Glossina palpalis gambiensis in the mangrove forests of Guinea.

BACKGROUND: In the mangroves of Guinea, where the most active foci of human African trypanosomiasis in West Africa are located, vector control against tsetse flies using insecticide-impregnated Tiny Targets was first introduced in 2012. While annual deployments of Tiny Targets have resulted in an overall 90% reduction in tsetse fly densities in control areas, managing tsetse densities in specific biotopes such as mangrove channels, which are susceptible to significant climatic disturbances, presents greater challenges. Thus, a new three-dimensional model called the Cross Target was designed to

Odor masking to decrease the attraction of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae, Triatominae), a Chagas disease vector, towards a host.

Chagas disease, vectored by kissing bugs, poses a public health problem across the Americas. The best way for reducing disease transmission is through vector control, which is currently based on the use of insecticides. However, insecticide resistance, and environmental and health issues, stress the need for new, environmentally-friendly methods for reducing vector-host contacts. Kissing bugs use the odor blend emitted by hosts to locate them. The proportions of the constituents of that blend are important to determine the attraction evoked by it. We aimed at assessing whether artificial alter

Emerging tick-borne pathogens of public health importance: a mini-review.

Ticks are the most important vectors of human pathogens, leading to increased public health burdens worldwide. Tick-borne pathogens include viruses (e.g. tick-borne encephalitis and Powassan); bacteria, such as the causative agents of Lyme disease, spotted fever rickettsiosis and human anaplasmosis; and malaria-like protozoan parasites causing babesiosis. Tick-borne diseases are emerging due to the geographical expansion of their tick vectors, especially in the northern hemisphere. Two examples of this phenomenon are Ixodes scapularis and Amblyomma americanum, which have expanded their ranges

After 70 years of fighting an age-old scourge, onchocerciasis in Uganda, the end is in sight.

Onchocerciasis causes severe itching, serious skin disease and ocular damage leading to visual impairment or permanent blindness. It is associated with hanging groin, epilepsy, Nakalanga dwarfism and, most recently, nodding disease. This disease affected communities in 17 transmission foci in 37 districts of Uganda, where about 6.7 million people are once at risk. The efforts against onchocerciasis in Uganda commenced in the late 1940s, when vector control was launched using dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane; by 1973, Simulium damnosum had been eliminated in the Victoria focus. Success outside o

Effectiveness of Fipronil as a Systemic Control Agent Against Xenopsylla cheopis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) in Madagascar.

Fipronil was evaluated as a systemic control agent for the rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis (Rothschild), the main vector of Yersinia pestis (Yersin), the causative agent of plague, in Madagascar. The effectiveness of fipronil as a systemic control agent against X. cheopis was assessed by determining the toxicity values of the "Lethal Dose 50" (LD50). Two techniques were used to evaluate the systemic action of the insecticide on the vector: 1) an artificial feeding device filled with blood-fipronil mixture from which X. cheopis was fed and 2) rodent hosts, Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout) and Rattus

[The beginning of Chagas disease control (homage to Dr. Emmanuel Dias, the pioneer of Chagas disease control, in the year of his birth centenary)].

Very soon Carlos Chagas took into account the need of trypanosomiasis control, considering its great social impact and geographical dispersion The vector was considered the more vulnerable target and housing improvement the basic strategy to face the disease. In parallel, it was required a more clinical visibility for the disease, as an argument for its control. The first concrete tentative occurred in 1918 when Souza Araújo dedicating his efforts in Paraná, trying housing improvement. He was followed by Ezequiel Dias et al, in 1921, employing chemical compounds against the vector, The chemica
