Spastic co-contraction, rather that spasticity, is associated with impaired active function in adults with acquired brain injury: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the adverse consequences of spasticity and spastic co-contraction of elbow flexors on motor impairment and upper limb functional limitation. DESIGN: A pilot case-controlled prospective observational study. SUBJECTS: Ten brain-injured adults, and 10 healthy controls. METHODS: The co-contraction index was computed from electromyographic recordings of elbow flexors during sub-maximal (25% Maximal Voluntary Contraction) isometric elbow extension. Spasticity was assessed with the Tardieu scale, upper limb limitation using a goniometer during active elbow extension, motor

Neomycin inhibition of hormone-stimulated smooth muscle contractions in myometrial tissue.

These studies sought to determine the effects of neomycin, a phospholipase C inhibitor, on hormone-stimulated myometrial contractions. For these studies, computer digitalized in vitro isometric contraction data were analyzed for changes in contractile activity in response to oxytocin and aluminum fluoride with and without neomycin. Neomycin (1-5 mM) produced dose-related inhibition of oxytocin and aluminum fluoride-stimulated myometrial contractions. This neomycin effect was apparent within 2-3 minutes of addition and was completely reversible, with resolution of its inhibitory effects within

The Effects of Quercetin Supplementation on Eccentric Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage.

The aim of the present investigation was to test the hypothesis that quercetin (Q) may prevent the strength loss and neuromuscular impairment associated with eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage (EEIMD). Twelve young men (26.1 ± 3.1 years) ingested either Q (1000 mg/day) or placebo (PLA) for 14 days using a randomized, double-blind, crossover study design. Participants completed a comprehensive neuromuscular (NM) evaluation before, during and after an eccentric protocol able to induce a severe muscle damage (10 sets of 10 maximal lengthening contractions). The NM evaluation comprised maxim

Immediate exercise hyperemia in humans is contraction intensity dependent: evidence for rapid vasodilation.

We tested the hypothesis that rapid vasodilation proportional to contraction intensity contributes to the immediate (first cardiac cycle after initial contraction) exercise hyperemia. Ten healthy subjects performed single 1-s isometric forearm contractions at 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 50, and 70% maximal voluntary contraction intensity (MVC) in arm above heart (AH) and below heart (BH) positions. Forearm blood flow (FBF; brachial artery mean blood velocity, Doppler ultrasound), mean arterial pressure (arterial tonometry), and heart rate (electrocardiogram) were measured beat by beat. Venous emptying

Comparison of cervical muscle isometric force between migraine subgroups or migraine-associated neck pain: a controlled study.

This study aimed to verify if migraine frequency or migraine-associated neck pain were associated with a reduction of normalized force and altered electromyographic activity during maximal cervical muscle isometric contractions. Additionally, it aimed to assess the correlation of normalized isometric force with years with migraine, headache frequency, headache intensity, migraine-related disability, and severity of cutaneous allodynia. The sample comprises 71 women with migraine (40/31 episodic/chronic, 42/18 with/without neck pain) and 32 women without headache. Cervical muscle isometric forc

The effect of contraction intensity on force fluctuations and motor unit entrainment in individuals with essential tremor.

OBJECTIVES: Quantify the effect of increasing contraction intensity on the amplitude of force fluctuations and neuromuscular and force tremor spectral power. METHODS: Twenty-one subjects with essential tremor (ET) and 22 healthy controls applied isometric wrist extension contractions. Various sub-maximal contraction intensities were evaluated (5%-, 10%-, 20%- and 30%-MVC). Force fluctuations and wrist extensor neuromuscular activity were recorded using a load cell and electromyography (EMG). RESULTS: Higher contraction intensities were associated with larger amplitude force fluctuations and

Defining safe rehabilitation for ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction of the elbow: a biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction of the elbow using a variety of techniques has been successful in enabling overhead athletes with ulnar collateral ligament insufficiency to return to competition. Most current postoperative rehabilitation programs begin with a period of motion restriction, including limiting elbow extension, that is followed by a transition from elbow strengthening to an interval throwing program, to competition. Motion restrictions early in the postoperative period may increase the risk for contractures. There is limited information to support current moti

In vivo hip joint loading during post-operative physiotherapeutic exercises.

INTRODUCTION: After hip surgery, it is the orthopedist's decision to allow full weight bearing to prevent complications or to prescribe partial weight bearing for bone ingrowth or fracture consolidation. While most loading conditions in the hip joint during activities of daily living are known, it remains unclear how demanding physiotherapeutic exercises are. Recommendations for clinical rehabilitation have been established, but these guidelines vary and have not been scientifically confirmed. The aim of this study was to provide a basis for practical recommendations by determining the hip joi

Influence of type of muscle contraction, gender, and lifting experience on postactivation potentiation performance.

Postactivation potentiation (PAP) or enhanced contractile capabilities may be influenced by a number of factors. This study examined the influence of type of muscle contraction (isometric vs. dynamic), gender, and previous weightlifting experience on PAP as demonstrated by changes in jump height and power output. Thirty young men (n = 15) and women (n = 15), classified as either having previous weightlifting experience (n = 20) or not (n = 10), performed 3 different sets of countermovement jumps, with the first set used to determine baseline measures of jump height and power. The second set wa

Pain does not explain reduced teres major co-contraction during abduction in patients with Subacromial Pain Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Subacromial Pain Syndrome show reduced co-contraction of the teres major during abduction. Consequent insufficient humeral depressor function may contribute to painful irritation of subacromial tissues and offers a potential target for therapy. A crucial gap in knowledge is whether the degree of teres major co-contraction in these patients is influenced by pain itself. To gain insight into this matter, we assessed whether relief of subacromial pain with local analgesics leads to increased adductor co-contraction in 34 patients with subacromial pain. METHODS: In a sin

Neural Substrates for Head Movements in Humans: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

The neural systems controlling head movements are not well delineated in humans. It is not clear whether the ipsilateral or contralateral primary motor cortex is involved in turning the head right or left. Furthermore, the exact location of the neck motor area in the somatotopic organization of the motor homunculus is still debated and evidence for contributions from other brain regions in humans is scarce. Because currently available neuroimaging methods are not generally suitable for mapping brain activation patterns during head movements, we conducted fMRI scans during isometric tasks of th

The effects of bumetanide on human umbilical artery contractions.

The authors investigate the effect of bumetan ide, an inhibitor of NKCC1 and a loop diuretic, on the tone of human umbilical artery (HUA). Rings of HUA (n = 35) from vaginal deliveries were suspended for isometric tension recordings in organ baths. Cumulative concentration-response curves to serotonin, histamine, and KCl were performed in the absence (control) or in the presence of bumetanide. The relaxant effect of bumetanide was also evaluated in serotonin- and histamine-induced contractions. Bumetanide inhibited HUA tone in serotonin- and histamine-induced contractions with significant chan

Vasopressin excitatory action on smooth muscle from human renal calyx and pelvis.

The motor response to vasopressin, a neuropeptide promoting the reabsorption of water, was isometrically investigated in vitro in human renal calyces and pelvis in relation to possible modulation of urinary flow by these tubular structures. Kidneys were obtained from nine male patients who underwent nephrectomy for either renal or ureteral cancer. Minor calyces and pelvis were carefully removed. Strips (10 mm x 3 mm) were cut from infundibular region of minor calyces and from renal pelvis and placed in 10 ml organ bath for isometric tension recordings. Calyceal and pelvic smooth muscle strips

The use of an isometric handgrip test to show autonomic damage in people with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Vascular endothelial and autonomic damage are hallmarks of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. However, while much has been published on impairment of the autonomic nervous system, much less has been published on the interrelationship between autonomic damage and exercise. STUDY DESIGN: The present investigation examined the change in heart rate, blood pressure, skin and limb blood flow, and sweat during non-fatiguing (10% and 25% maximum strength [maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)]) and a fatiguing isometric contraction (40% MVC) in people with type 2 diabetes compared to younger and o

Cardiac and vasomotor components of the carotid baroreflex control of arterial blood pressure during isometric exercise in humans.

We sought to examine the importance of the cardiac component of the carotid baroreflex (CBR) in control of blood pressure during isometric exercise. Nine subjects performed 4 min of ischaemic isometric calf exercise at 20% of maximum voluntary contraction. Trials were repeated with beta1-adrenergic blockade (metoprolol, 0.15 +/- 0.003 mg kg(-1)) or parasympathetic blockade (glycopyrrolate, 13.6 +/- 1.5 microg kg(-1)). CBR function was determined using rapid pulses of neck pressure and neck suction from +40 to -80 mmHg, while heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP) and changes in stroke v

Effects of genetic obesity on rat upper airway muscle and diaphragm contractile properties.

The contractile properties of pharyngeal respiratory muscle are altered in sleep apnoea and in conditions associated with sleep apnoea, such as ageing. We hypothesized that the contractile properties of the pharyngeal musculature are also altered by obesity, another factor associated with sleep apnoea. Studies compared a pharyngeal muscle, the sternohyoid, with the diaphragm. These were chosen as representative muscles whose contraction has opposing effects on upper airway patency. Both muscles were removed from nine lean and nine obese male Zucker rats (a genetic model of obesity), and isomet

Quantifying voluntary knee strength deficits and muscular contribution to torque in an anterior cruciate ligament-injured adolescent population using a musculoskeletal model.

BACKGROUND: Surface electromyography is commonly used to elucidate the effect of anterior cruciate ligament injury on neuromuscular function. For comparisons, electromyography is normalized to a known value, such as peak activation during maximum voluntary isometric contractions. However, a knee injury may compromise one's ability to achieve a true maximal effort. A simple musculoskeletal model may provide insight into injury related strength deficits. METHODS: Thirty-nine anterior cruciate ligament injured adolescents (14-16 years; 25 females) and 39 matched controls (25 females) completed m
