VIDHOP, viral host prediction with deep learning.

MOTIVATION: Zoonosis, the natural transmission of infections from animals to humans, is a far-reaching global problem. The recent outbreaks of Zikavirus, Ebolavirus and Coronavirus are examples of viral zoonosis, which occur more frequently due to globalization. In case of a virus outbreak, it is helpful to know which host organism was the original carrier of the virus to prevent further spreading of viral infection. Recent approaches aim to predict a viral host based on the viral genome, often in combination with the potential host genome and arbitrarily selected features. These methods are l

Data-Driven Management-A Dynamic Occupancy Approach to Enhanced Rabies Surveillance Prioritization.

Rabies lyssavirus (RABV) is enzootic in raccoons across the eastern United States. Intensive management of RABV by oral rabies vaccination (ORV) has prevented its spread westward and shown evidence of local elimination in raccoon populations of the northeastern US. The USDA, Wildlife Services, National Rabies Management Program (NRMP) collaborates with other agencies to implement broad-scale ORV and conducts extensive monitoring to measure the effectiveness of the management. Enhanced Rabies Surveillance (ERS) was initiated during 2005 and updated in 2016 to direct surveillance efforts toward

A comparative review of serological assays for the detection of rabies virus-specific antibodies.

Rabies is a major public health problem with a fatality rate close to 100%, caused by a virus of the Lyssavirus genus, of which rabies virus (RABV) is the prototype. Nonetheless, the complete prevention can be achieved by the induction of neutralizing antibodies by pre- or post-exposure prophylaxis. According to the world health organization (WHO) and World Organization for animal health (OIE), serum titers of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies (RVNA) that are higher or equal to 0.5 international units (IU)/ml indicate adequate immune response after vaccination against rabies. Currently, RFF

The anti-rabies activity of Caspian cobra venom.

Rabies is acute encephalitis that continuously kills thousands of people annually. There is no clinical cure for rabies so far and its prevention is limited to sero-vaccinations based on standard WHO protocols. Certain compounds such as snake venoms contain active biological components with tendency toward acetylcholine receptors and ion channels at the cell surface. These compounds then are able to reduce aggregation of the virus in neuromuscular junction that may lead to inhibit the virus activity. In this study we worked on cytotoxicity and antiviral activity effects of Naja naja oxiana (Ir

Using host traits to predict reservoir host species of rabies virus.

Wildlife are important reservoirs for many pathogens, yet the role that different species play in pathogen maintenance frequently remains unknown. This is the case for rabies, a viral disease of mammals. While Carnivora (carnivores) and Chiroptera (bats) are the canonical mammalian orders known to be responsible for the maintenance and onward transmission of rabies Lyssavirus (RABV), the role of most species within these orders remains unknown and is continually changing as a result of contemporary host shifting. We combined a trait-based analytical approach with gradient boosting machine lear

Novel and Diverse Non-Rabies Rhabdoviruses Identified in Bats with Human Exposure, South Dakota, USA.

Bats are a host and reservoir for a large number of viruses, many of which are zoonotic. In North America, the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) is widely distributed and common. Big brown bats are a known reservoir for rabies virus, which, combined with their propensity to roost in human structures, necessitates testing for rabies virus following human exposure. The current pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, likely of bat origin, illustrates the need for continued surveillance of wildlife and bats for potentially emerging zoonotic viruses. Viral metagenomic seq

Novel mass spectrometry based detection and identification of variants of rabies virus nucleoprotein in infected brain tissues.

Human rabies is an encephalitic disease transmitted by animals infected with lyssaviruses. The most common lyssavirus that causes human infection is rabies virus (RABV), the prototypic member of the genus. The incubation period of RABV in humans varies from few weeks to several months in some instances. During this prodromal period, neither antibodies nor virus is detected. Antibodies, antigen and nucleic acids are detectable only after the onset of encephalitic symptoms, at which point the outcome of the disease is nearly 100% fatal. Hence, the primary intervention for human RABV exposure and

Rabies - epidemiology, pathogenesis, public health concerns and advances in diagnosis and control: a comprehensive review.

Rabies is a zoonotic, fatal and progressive neurological infection caused by rabies virus of the genus Lyssavirus and family Rhabdoviridae. It affects all warm-blooded animals and the disease is prevalent throughout the world and endemic in many countries except in Islands like Australia and Antarctica. Over 60,000 peoples die every year due to rabies, while approximately 15 million people receive rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) annually. Bite of rabid animals and saliva of infected host are mainly responsible for transmission and wildlife like raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes are main

Natural Rabies Infection in a Domestic Fowl (Gallus domesticus): A Report from India.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a fatal encephalitis caused by viruses belonging to the genus Lyssavirus of the family Rhabdoviridae. It is a viral disease primarily affecting mammals, though all warm blooded animals are susceptible. Experimental rabies virus infection in birds has been reported, but naturally occurring infection of birds has been documented very rarely. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The carcass of a domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus), which had been bitten by a stray dog one month back, was brought to the rabies diagnostic laboratory. A necropsy was performed and the brain tissue obtained was su

Comparative assay of fluorescent antibody test results among twelve European National Reference Laboratories using various anti-rabies conjugates.

Twelve National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) for rabies have undertaken a comparative assay to assess the comparison of fluorescent antibody test (FAT) results using five coded commercial anti-rabies conjugates (Biorad, Bioveta, Fujirebio, Millipore, and SIFIN conjugates). Homogenized positive brain tissues infected with various lyssavirus species as well as negative samples were analyzed blindly using a standardized FAT procedure. Conjugates B, C, D, and E were found to be significantly more effective than conjugate A for GS7 (French RABV) diluted samples (1/8 and 1/100) while the frequency

Phylogenetic relationships of seven previously unclassified viruses within the family Rhabdoviridae using partial nucleoprotein gene sequences.

Partial nucleoprotein (N) gene sequences of the rhabdoviruses Obodhiang (OBOV), Kotonkon (KOTV), Rochambeau (RBUV), Kern canyon (KCV), Mount Elgon bat (MEBV), Kolongo (KOLV) and Sandjimba (SJAV) were generated and their phylogenetic positions within the family Rhabdoviridae were determined. Both OBOV and KOTV were placed within the genus Ephemerovirus. RBUV was joined to the same cluster, but more distantly. MEBV and KCV were grouped into a monophyletic cluster (putative genus) with Oita virus (OITAV). These three viruses, originating from different regions of the world, were all isolated from

Australia's notifiable diseases status, 2001: annual report of the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System.

In 2001 there were 104,187 notifications of communicable diseases in Australia reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS). The number of notifications in 2001 was an increase of 16 per cent of those reported in 2000 (89,740) and the largest annual total since the NNDSS commenced in 1991. In 2001, nine new diseases were added to the list of diseases reported to NNDSS and four diseases were removed. The new diseases were cryptosporidiosis, laboratory-confirmed influenza, invasive pneumococcal disease, Japanese encephalitis, Kunjin virus infection, Murray Valley ence

[Construction of a Recombinant Replication-defective Human Adenovirus Type 5 Expressing G Protein of Irkut Virus and the Immune Test in Mouse].

To develop a safe and effective new generation vaccine for IRKV-THChina12 prevention, we constructed a non-replicative recombinant human adenovirus carrying the IRKV-THChina12 G gene, named as rAd5-IRKV-G. The IRKV-THChina12 G protein expressed by the recombinant human adenovirus in 293AD cells was detected by western blot and indirect immunofluorescence test. To evaluate the immunogenicity of the recombinant, mice were immunized with rAd5-IRKV-G by intramuscular (i. m.) or intraperitoneal (i. p.) route and with non-exogenous gene expressing wild type adenovirus wt-rAd5 as a control. Temporal changes in rabies epidemiology in Brazil: an analysis of notifications of suspected and confirmed human rabies cases, 2010-2025.

Human rabies is an invariably fatal encephalitis caused by Lyssavirus species, with near-100% lethality after symptom onset. In Brazil, canine vaccination has markedly reduced urban transmission. However, human deaths continue to occur and are increasingly linked to sylvatic reservoirs, particularly Desmodus rotundus bats. This study describes the epidemiological profile of human rabies in Brazil from 2010 to 2025, focusing on temporal trends, aggressor species, demographics, geographic distribution, and genetic/antigenic variants. This descriptive time-series study used secondary data from th

Comparison of 4 laboratory tests for the detection of bovine rabies viral infection in Paraguay: fluorescent antibody test, rapid detection test, histologic lesions, and RT-PCR.

Rabies virus (RABV; Lyssavirus rabies) is a neurotropic virus that can be transmitted to mammals by the hematophagous bat Desmodus rotundus. An accurate, accessible method for the detection of RABV in cattle is necessary in Paraguay; thus, we evaluated the detection of RABV using 4 techniques: fluorescent antibody test (FAT), immunochromatography rapid detection test (RDT; Anigen Rapid Rabies Ag test kit; Bionote), a reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR) assay, and histologic lesions in different portions of the CNS of 49 Paraguayan cattle to determine the most sensitive and specific technique. Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Rabies Virus-Infected Human and Canine Brains.

Rabies is a fatal encephalitis caused by the Rabies lyssavirus (RABV). The presence of minimal neuropathological changes observed in rabies indicates that neuronal dysfunction, rather than neuronal death contributes to the fatal outcome. The role of mitochondrial changes has been suggested as a possible mechanism for neuronal dysfunction in rabies. However, these findings are mostly based on studies that have employed experimental models and laboratory-adapted virus. Studies on brain tissues from naturally infected human and animal hosts are lacking. The current study investigated the role of

A retrospective longitudinal study of animal and human rabies in Botswana 1989-2006.

A longitudinal study of animal and human rabies covering 18 years from 1989 to 2006 was retrospectively conducted in order to highlight the epidemiological features and trends of the disease in Botswana. Over the 18-year period, a total of 4 306 brain specimens collected from various species of animals including human beings with clinical signs consistent with rabies were submitted to the National Veterinary Laboratory in Gaborone for confirmatory diagnosis. Of the samples submitted, 2419 cases were found to be positive for lyssavirus antigen; this presents an overall prevalence rate of 56.18

A descriptive study on epidemiological profile of patients presenting with animal bites at a rural health facility in Uttarakhand, India.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a viral disease caused by Lyssavirus type 1, primarily affecting warm-blooded animals, especially carnivores like dogs and cats. It is classified as a neglected tropical disease and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. Rabies spreads through saliva, typically via bites or scratches from infected animals, and 95% of global rabies deaths occur in Africa and Asia. In India, around 6-7 million animal bites are reported annually, with dogs responsible for 95% of rabies cases. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to assess the clinical - social profile
