The Effect of Some Wild Grown Plant Extracts and Essential Oils on Pectobacterium betavasculorum: The Causative Agent of Bacterial Soft Rot and Vascular Wilt of Sugar Beet.

The bacterial soft rot and vascular wilt of sugar beet are the major diseases of sugar crops globally induced by Pectobacterium betavasculorum and P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc). The control of this bacterial disease is a severe problem, and only a few copper-based chemical bactericides are available for this disease. Because of the limitations of chemicals to control plant bacterial pathogens, the essential oils and extracts have been considered one of the best alternative strategies for their control. In this study, twenty-seven essential oils and twenty-nine plant extracts were ext

R(+)-pulegone impairs Ca²+ homeostasis and causes negative inotropism in mammalian myocardium.

The present study aimed to investigate the inotropic effects of R(+)-pulegone, a monoterpene found in plant species belonging to the genus Mentha, on the mammalian heart. In electrically stimulated guinea pig atria, R(+)-pulegone reduced the contractile force (~83%) and decreased the contraction time measured at 50% of the maximum force amplitude (CT(50)) from 45.8 ± 6.2 ms to 36.9 ± 6.2 ms, suggesting that R(+)-pulegone may have an effect on Ca(2+) homeostasis. Nifedipine (40 μM), taken as a positive control, showed a very similar profile. To explore the hypothesis that R(+)-pulegone is someh

Effects of mint, thyme, and curcumin extract nanoformulations on the sperm quality, apoptosis, chromatin decondensation, enzyme activity, and oxidative status of cryopreserved goat semen.

Goat semen cryopreservation is a challenging process as it results in reduced motility, vitality, and fertility of spermatozoa after freezing. In this study, we evaluated the effects of different herbal extract nanoformulations (NFs) [mint (MENFs), thyme (TENFs), and curcumin (CENFs)], supplemented at either 50 or 100 μg into Tris-extender on the cryopreserved goat semen quality. The hydrothermal squeezing method was used for the preparation of the NFs extracts. The morphological evaluation of the NFs extracts was conducted by transmission electron microscopy. All NFs supplements improved (p <

Stress Response and Virulence Potential Modulating Effect of Peppermint Essential Oil in Campylobacter jejuni.

Campylobacter jejuni is one of the most common food-borne bacteria that causes gastrointestinal symptoms. In the present study we have investigated the molecular basis of the anti-Campylobacter effect of peppermint essential oil (PEO), one of the oldest EO used to treat gastrointestinal diseases. Transcriptomic, quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and proteomic, two-dimensional polyacryl amid gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) methods have revealed that, in the presence of a sublethal concentration of PEO, the expression of several virulence-associated genes was d
