Role of meteorological factors in duodenal ulcer seasonality: a nation-wide, population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding disease seasonality can provide guidance for future biomedical research. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether meteorological factors and calendar months impact duodenal ulcer (DU) exacerbations. DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective time series analysis of population-based claims data. PARTICIPANTS: DU inpatients (1997-2003; all endoscopy confirmed) from Taiwan, a small island nation, n = 160,510. Inpatient admission was used as a proxy for exacerbation because 98.5% of cases had hemorrhage or perforation or both. MEASUREMENTS: We used multivariate autoregressive integrat

Modeling analysis of secondary inorganic aerosols over China: pollution characteristics, and meteorological and dust impacts.

Secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA) are the predominant components of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and have significant impacts on air quality, human health, and climate change. In this study, the Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system (CMAQ) was modified to incorporate SO2 heterogeneous reactions on the surface of dust particles. The revised model was then used to simulate the spatiotemporal characteristics of SIA over China and analyze the impacts of meteorological factors and dust on SIA formation. Including the effects of dust improved model performance for the simulation of SI

Influence of ambient fungal spores on emergency visits for asthma to a regional children's hospital.

The impact of ambient aeroallergens on morbidity from childhood asthma is largely unknown. To address this issue, we studied the association between daily emergency department visits for asthma to a children's hospital, and daily concentrations of both pollen grains and fungal spores during a 5-yr period between 1993 and 1997. Air pollution and meteorological data accounted for in the analyses included ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, sulfates, temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity. The daily number of asthma visits ranged from 0 to 36 per day with an average of 7.5.

Mosquitoes, leeches and medicine in Charleston, South Carolina (1670-1861).

Charleston, South Carolina, USA has a rich history extending over 300 years. The plantations of the Carolina Low Country produced rice, indigo and cotton. Mosquitoes, which abounded in the wetlands, transmitted diseases such as Yellow Fever and epidemics occurred almost every year. African slaves, however, had a natural immunity to the disease and, together with the climate and the nature of the work, this shaped the economic and social system of the area. Physicians offered all sorts of cures to deal with the medical problems of the area and apothecaries also sold many nostrums including leec

The portfolio effect cushions mosquito populations and malaria transmission against vector control interventions.

BACKGROUND: Portfolio effects were first described as a basis for mitigating against financial risk by diversifying investments. Distributing investment across several different assets can stabilize returns and reduce risks by statistical averaging of individual asset dynamics that often correlate weakly or negatively with each other. The same simple probability theory is equally applicable to complex ecosystems, in which biological and environmental diversity stabilizes ecosystems against natural and human-mediated perturbations. Given the fundamental limitations to how well the full complexi

Application research on surveillance and predictive modeling of respiratory diseases in Baise City based on meteorological big data analysis.

Respiratory diseases are increasingly influenced by meteorological variability, yet few studies have applied high-resolution environmental data and advanced forecasting models to quantify this relationship in climate-sensitive regions such as southern China. This study aims to characterize how climate variability drives respiratory disease dynamics by quantifying the influence of meteorological factors and constructing predictive models for early intervention. It further seeks to advance climate-resilient health surveillance through the application of machine learning and time-series forecasti
