RATIONALE: Characteristic signs of leukemic retinopathy include bilateral intra-retinal hemorrhage, white-centred hemorrhage, macular hemorrhage and cotton-wool spots. Capillary closure, retinal microaneurysms and neovascularization following massive fundus hemorrhage could be involved in few of the above instances. However, single choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in macular has not been observed in acute myelocytic leukemia (AML).
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 22-year-old woman presented with a 7-day history of vision decline in the right eye (OD). The patient was diagnosed as M3 AML one month earli

Events responsible for cerebrovascular disease in diabetes are not fully understood. Pericyte loss is an early event that leads to endothelial cell death, microaneurysms, and cognitive impairment. A biochemical mechanism underlying pericyte loss is rapid respiration (oxidative metabolism of glucose). This escalation in respiration results from free influx of glucose into insulin-insensitive tissues in the face of high glucose levels in the blood. Rapid respiration generates superoxide, the precursor to all reactive oxygen species (ROS), and results in pericyte death. Respiration is regulated b

Coats' disease diagnosed in adulthood is rare; therefore, the treatment options and longer clinical course are not well established. We report on two cases of adult onset Coats' disease, which have been observed for more than 10 years after conventional treatment. In the first case, a 76-year-old man with 9 years of diabetic retinopathy noticed a visual field defect in his left eye. Yellowish subretinal exudation with serous retinal detachment in his superior peripheral retina, and telangiectatic vessels with fluorescein leakage, numerous microaneurysms, and areas of capillary nonperfusion obs

Hyperlipidemia is thought to accelerate the progression of renal diseases, but the mechanisms by which hyperlipidemia exerts its deleterious effect is still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to describe the renal pathology in a hyperlipidemic mouse strain, the apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (apoE-/-). Renal specimens from a total of 34 mice were studied, including 19 apoE-/- females at the age of 36 weeks, 9 apoE-/- females at the age of 24 weeks, and 6 wild-type females (C57BL/6) as controls. Kidneys were evaluated by histologic examination, immunohistochemistry, and electron micr

Galactose-fed rats develop a retinal microvascular disease, but retinopathy has not been found to develop reproducibly in diabetic rats. We sought to determine which retinal lesions can be reproducibly produced by long-term diabetes in rats, the extent to which the capillary lesions in diabetic rats and galactosemic rats are similar, and whether the retinopathy induced by 50% galactose can be reproduced satisfactorily by a lower concentration of galactose. Alloxan-diabetic rats and rats fed either a 50% galactose diet or a 30% galactose diet were killed after comparable durations of study (18

Fibronectin (Fn) regulates cell migration, proliferation, and extracellular matrix formation during embryogenesis, angiogenesis, and wound healing. Fn also promotes mesangial cell migration and proliferation in vitro and contributes to extracellular matrix formation and tissue remodeling during glomerular disease. In this study, we examined, by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, the temporal glomerular localization and cellular sources of Fn in Habu snake venom (HSV)-induced proliferative glomerulonephritis. Early HSV-induced glomerular lesions consisted of microaneurysms devoid o

High blood pressure (BP) is associated with increased risk of vascular disease, including myocardial infarction and stroke. Since drugs that lower BP will reduce the risk of those complications of hypertension that are due to high pressure (strokes due to small-vessel disease, including lacunar infarction and intracerebral hemorrhage due to rupture of microaneurysms, heart failure, and renal failure), it has been assumed that such drugs would also reduce the risk of myocardial infarction due to atherosclerosis. However, in addition to hypertension, many other factors are involved in the athero

Recent advances in multi-view fundus imaging show great promise for automated diabetic retinopathy (DR) grading. However, mainstream end-to-end CNN/Transformer pipelines rely on striding or tokenization that compresses spatial detail, causing small, low-contrast lesions (e.g., microaneurysms) to be under-represented and creating performance ceilings. Prior efforts have mitigated this by incorporating external lesion- or vessel-level annotations into models. However, such labels are costly to acquire, break the end-to-end training, and make performance over-reliant on the annotation quality. To

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Retinal imaging allows non-invasive assessment of the microvasculature. Consequently, retinal imaging is a technology which is garnering increasing attention as a means of assessing cardiovascular health and stroke risk.
METHODS: A biomedical literature search was performed to identify prospective studies that assess the role of retinal imaging derived biomarkers as indicators of stroke risk.
RESULTS: Twenty-four studies were included in this systematic review. The available evidence suggests that wider retinal venules, lower

This study aimed to review the current literature exploring the utility of noninvasive ocular imaging for the diagnosis of peripheral artery disease (PAD). Our search was conducted in early April 2022 and included the databases Medline, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane, and others. Five articles were included in the final review. Of the five studies that used ocular imaging in PAD, two studies used retinal color fundus photography, one used optical coherence tomography (OCT), and two used optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to assess the ocular changes in PAD. PAD was associated with both

Retinal angiopathy associated with hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv), if untreated, may lead to irreversible vision loss. Our purpose was to systematically review the clinical and imaging features of retinal angiopathy associated with ATTRv and assemble a monitoring approach for these patients. All types of original research studies reporting clinical and imaging findings on retinal angiopathy associated with ATTRv were included. The most common clinical findings were tortuous retinal vessels, microaneurysms, retinal hemorrhages, sheathing of retinal vessels, whitish amyloid deposit

BACKGROUND: Coats disease is a retinal vascular disorder characterized by aneurysms and telangiectasias. Macular fibrosis is a complication of Coats disease that results in vision loss. Macular fibrosis rarely develops in the natural course and often occurs after treatment with intravitreal bevacizumab, photocoagulation, or cryotherapy. Here, we have described an unusual case of spontaneous peeling of preretinal macular fibrosis in a patient with untreated Coats disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old Japanese boy presented with vision loss in his left eye. The patient's left visual acuity

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a major ocular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), leading to significant visual impairment. DME's pathogenesis is multifactorial. Focal edema tends to occur when primary metabolic abnormalities lead to a persistent hyperglycemic state, causing the development of microaneurysms, often with extravascular lipoprotein in a circinate pattern around the focal leakage. On the other hand, diffusion edema is due to a generalized breakdown of the inner blood-retinal barrier, leading to profuse early leakage from the entire capillary bed of the posterior pole with the

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a chronic pathological condition characterized by progressive accumulation of amyloid protein in the wall of cerebral blood vessels, both leptomeningeal and cortical. That may result in the development of such conditions as microaneurysms, hemorrhagic, ischaemic brain injury and contribute to cognitive impairment. We herein report a case of Iowa-type hereditary cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) mutation diagnosed with MS. The family of the reported patient had performed genetic testing due to the history of intracerebral hemorrhage. Sequence analysis of exo

Diabetic macular edema (DME) treatment represents a challenge for the ophthalmologists, and several aspects of real treatment expectancy are still being discussed and not yet fully elucidated. A univocal definition of responsiveness to treatment has not been reached. How the clinicians can evaluate the therapeutic success? The evaluation of systemic and ocular factors should help in this complex management. The age influences the long-term outcomes, and the role of glycemic control is confounded by contrasting correlations between hemoglobin glycated A1c and DME. Long-term treatment success is

BACKGROUND: Recurrent artery of Heubner (RAH) aneurysms are rare, with only 7 reported cases in the literature to date. In evaluating cerebral aneurysms, cerebral digital subtraction angiogram (DSA) is considered the gold standard and demonstrated the RAH aneurysms in previous case reports. We present a case of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage secondary to RAH aneurysmal rupture, with initial DSA misleading, suggesting minor aneurysmal filling of a presumed thrombosed A1 segment aneurysm instead.

BACKGROUND: Coats disease is a retinal disease characterized by exudative retinal detachment due to abnormal retinal blood vessels. Coats disease is generally treated using laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy to ablate the abnormal retinal blood vessels. However, if abnormal blood vessels are present near the posterior pole of the eye and there is a severe exudative change there, it is difficult to perform these standard treatments. We describe a case of Coats disease with severe exudative retinal change and retinal vascular abnormality near the posterior pole for which we performed photody
