School performance in offspring born to mothers with hyperemesis gravidarum.

BACKGROUND: Hyperemesis gravidarum is characterized by severe nausea, vomiting, and potentially undernutrition during pregnancy. Despite affecting up to 3% of all pregnancies, little is known about the impact of hyperemesis gravidarum on the cognitive development of the child. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the school performance of offspring exposed to hyperemesis gravidarum during pregnancy with their nonexposed counterparts and siblings. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a population-based cohort study including all liveborn children, born in Denmark between January 1, 1986, and December 31, 200

Monocytic Infiltrates Contribute to Autistic-like Behaviors in a Two-Hit Model of Neurodevelopmental Defects.

Growing evidence suggests that early-life interactions among genetic, immune, and environment factors may modulate neurodevelopment and cause psycho-cognitive deficits. Maternal immune activation (MIA) induces autism-like behaviors in offspring, but how it interplays with perinatal brain injury (especially birth asphyxia or hypoxia ischemia [HI]) is unclear. Herein we compared the effects of MIA (injection of poly[I:C] to dam at gestational day 12.5), HI at postnatal day 10, and the combined MIA/HI insult in murine offspring of both sexes. We found that MIA induced autistic-like behaviors with

Comparison of Acute and Protracted Gamma Irradiation Effects During Perinatal Development in Beagle Dogs.

Ionizing radiation exposure during perinatal development can produce various biological effects on the developing offspring. These effects are dependent on a number of factors, including total dose, dose rate and the developmental processes occurring at the time of irradiation. The present study conducted an analysis of historical radiobiological archived data involving 60Co-gamma irradiation of beagle dogs at specific periods of prenatal or postnatal development. The original studies were performed at two sites where animals were exposed to a single, acute dose of 0.2 or 1.0 Gy at six differe

Vitamin D Status During Pregnancy and Risk of Multiple Sclerosis in Offspring of Women in the Finnish Maternity Cohort.

ImportanceVitamin D has been associated with a decreased risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adulthood; however, some, but not all, previous studies have suggested that in utero vitamin D exposure may be a risk factor for MS later in life.ObjectiveTo examine whether serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels in early pregnancy are associated with risk of MS in offspring.Design, setting, and participantsProspective, nested case-control study in the Finnish Maternity Cohort conducted in May 2011. We identified 193 individuals with a diagnosis of MS before December 31, 2009, whose mothers are in t

Effect of Preventive Chlamydia abortus Vaccination in Offspring Development in Sheep Challenged Experimentally.

Ovine enzootic abortion, caused by Chlamydia abortus, leads to important economic losses worldwide. In addition to reproductive failures, infection may impact lamb growth during the first weeks after birth, yet this effect has not been well characterized. Vaccination can help to control the disease but variable efficacy values have been described, possibly related with factors associated with the host, the vaccine, the parameter used for efficacy determination, and the challenge conditions. In this context, we evaluated the efficacy of an inactivated standard commercial vaccine and a 1/2 dilut

Familial and second gastric carcinomas: a nationwide epidemiologic study from Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Familial risks in gastric carcinoma have been assessed mainly through case-control studies based on reported but not medically verified carcinomas in family members. Reliable data on familial risks are needed for prevention and clinical decisions. METHODS: The authors used the nationwide Swedish Family-Cancer Database on 10.2 million individuals and more than 34,000 gastric carcinomas to calculate standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for gastric carcinoma in offspring, from birth to 66 years old, by carcinomas in family members. In addition, SIRs

Maternal intake restriction programs the energy metabolism, clock circadian regulator and mTOR signals in the skeletal muscles of goat offspring probably via the protein kinase A-cAMP-responsive element-binding proteins pathway.

The biological mechanism by which maternal undernutrition increases the metabolic disorder risk of skeletal muscles in offspring is not fully understood. We hypothesize that maternal intake restriction influences metabolic signals in the skeletal muscles of offspring via a glucagon-mediated pathway. Twenty-four pregnant goats were assigned to the control group (100% of the nutrients requirement, n = 12) and restricted group (60% of the control feed allowance from pregnant days 45 to 100, n = 12). Blood and L ongissimus thoracis muscle were sampled from dams (100 d of gestation), fetuses (100 d

Impaired glucose tolerance in adolescent offspring of diabetic mothers. Relationship to fetal hyperinsulinism.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that long-term postnatal development may be modified by metabolic experiences in utero. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We enrolled offspring of women with pregestational diabetes (this included insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus [IDDM] and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus [NIDDM]) and gestational diabetes in a prospective study from 1977 through 1983. Fetal beta-cell function was assessed by measurement of amniotic fluid insulin (AFI) at 32-38 weeks gestation. Postnatally, plasma glucose and insulin were measured yearly from 1.5 years of age after fasti

The associations of cash transfers with parental investment and couples' fertility among low-income Serbian Roma.

Welfare incentives, by providing parents access to certain resources, may increase the reliability of parental investment returns and thus increase opportunities to invest in offspring quality vs. quantity and eventually a drop in fertility. Using the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 6 for Serbian Roma, this study examined whether improvements in resources, driven by cash transfers, encouraged parental greater engagement per child and a drop in fertility. The sample included 1095 Roma couples whereas a couple's number of biological children by number of years married was used as a proxy for f

Association of influenza vaccination during pregnancy with birth outcomes in Nicaragua.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that influenza vaccination during pregnancy reduces the risk of influenza disease in pregnant women and their offspring. Some have proposed that maternal vaccination may also have beneficial effects on birth outcomes. In 2014, we conducted an observational study to test this hypothesis using data from two large hospitals in Managua, Nicaragua. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate associations between influenza vaccination and birth outcomes. We carried out interviews and reviewed medical records post-partum to collect data on demographi

Use of benzodiazepines and benzodiazepine receptor agonists during pregnancy: maternal characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Use of benzodiazepine (BZD) drugs or hypnotic benzodiazepine receptor agonists (HBRAs) during pregnancy may represent a hazard for the foetus. In order to analyse this in an adequate way, knowledge of maternal characteristics as putative confounders is needed. METHODS: In the Swedish Medical Birth Register, 2149 pregnant women using BZDs or HBRAs were identified, 1944 of them in early pregnancy. These women were compared with other women (n = 859 455) giving births during the same period (1 July 1995-31 December 2004). The following maternal characteristics were studied: age, pari

A synthetic biosocial model of fertility transition: testing the relative contribution of embodied capital theory, changing cultural norms, and women's labor force participation.

This article presents a biosocial model of fertility decline, which integrates ecological-economic and informational-cultural hypotheses of fertility transition in a unified theoretical framework. The model is then applied to empirical data collected among 500 women from San Borja, Bolivia, a population undergoing fertility transition. Using a combination of event history analysis, multiple regression, and structural equation modeling, we examine the pathways by which education responds to birth cohort, parental education and network ties, and how age at first birth and total fertility, in tur

Etiology and incidence of postpartum depression among birthing women in the scenario of pandemics, geopolitical conflicts and natural disasters: a systematic review.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is classified under postpartum psychiatric disorders and initiates soon after birthing, eliciting neuropsychological and behavioral deficits in mothers and offspring. Globally, PPD is estimated to be associated with 130-190 per 1000 birthing. The severity and incidences of PPD have aggravated in the recent years due to the several unfavorable environmental and geopolitical circumstances. The purpose of this systematic review hence is to explore the contributions of recent circumstances on the pathogenesis and incidence of PPD. The search, selection and retrieval of

Toxoplasma gondii--an environmental contaminant.

Toxoplasma gondii, the causal agent of toxoplasmosis, is a ubiquitous protozoan parasite which has the potential to infect man and all warm-blooded animals. It has as its definitive host the cat. Infections acquired by the human adult are generally subclinical. However, if acquired for the first time during pregnancy, the parasite can invade the developing foetus. Under these circumstances infection can result in abortion, stillbirth or production of live-born offspring with severe multiple organ involvement. Alternatively, offspring can be symptomless at birth but may manifest neurological an
