Urban neuromodulation and neurofeedback systems have become increasingly adaptive and closed-loop. However, they still focus primarily on brain signals and often ignore the urban areas where these signals happen. The framework introduced in this study integrates EEG, physiological measures, indicators of environmental exposures, and GIS spatial analysis. Our goal is to incorporate Local Climate Zone classification into one unified cycle of user-specific interpretation. Contrary to the typical methodology in digital exposomes and environmental neuroscience, where the individual-to-environment r

Neurofeedback (NF) has emerged as a promising avenue for demonstrating process-related neuroplasticity, enabling self-regulation of brain function. NF targeting the amygdala has drawn attention to therapeutic potential in psychiatry, by potentially harnessing emotion-regulation processes. However, not all individuals respond equally to NF training, possibly owing to varying self-regulation abilities. This underscores the importance of understanding the mechanisms behind successful neuromodulation (i.e. capacity). This study aimed to investigate the establishment and neural correlates of neurom

Brain-computer interface (BCI) brings hope to patients suffering from neuromuscular diseases, by allowing the control of external devices using neural signals from the central nervous system. However, a portion of individuals was unable to operate BCI with high efficacy. This research aimed to study the brain-wide functional connectivity differences that contributed to BCI performance, and investigate the relationship between task-related connectivity strength and BCI performance. Functional connectivity was estimated using pairwise Pearson's correlation from the EEG of 48 subjects performing

Objective. Diabetes mellitus (DM) causes structural central nervous system (CNS) impairment, and this situation can be detected by quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) findings before cognitive impairment is clinically observed. The main aim of this study is to uncover the effect of DM on brain function. Since QEEG reflects the CNS functioning, particularly in cognitive aspects, we expected electrophysiological clues to be found for prevention and follow-up in DM-related cognitive decline. Since a majority of the psychiatric population have cognitive dysfunction, we have given particular

PURPOSE: Many individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience challenges with facial emotion recognition (FER), which may exacerbate social difficulties in ASD. Few studies have examined whether FER can be experimentally manipulated and improved for autistic people. This study utilized a randomized controlled trial design to examine acceptability and preliminary clinical impact of a novel mixed reality-based neurofeedback program, FER Assistant, using EEG brain computer interface (BCI)-assisted technology to improve FER for autistic adolescents and adults.
METHODS: Twenty-seven aut

Affective decoding is the inference of human emotional states using brain signal measurements. This approach is crucial to develop new therapeutic approaches for psychiatric rehabilitation, such as affective neurofeedback protocols. To reduce the training duration and optimize the clinical outputs, an ideal clinical neurofeedback could be trained using data from an independent group of volunteers before being used by new patients. Here, we investigated if this subject-independent design of affective decoding can be achieved using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals from front

The hippocampus is crucial for mental time travel and visuospatial processing, with dysfunction having major implications for aging, stress resilience, and mental health. While external neurostimulation methods can modulate hippocampal activity, effective real-world interventions require flexible, self-guided approaches. Building on recent demonstrations of endogenous hippocampal control in rodents, we show in two real-time fMRI neurofeedback studies (n = 141) that human participants can harness self-generated mental states to upregulate hippocampal activity within a single training session. Motor imagery (MI) based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are a viable option for giving locked-in syndrome patients independence and communicability. BCIs comprising expensive medical-grade EEG systems evaluated in carefully-controlled, artificial environments are impractical for take-home use. Previous studies evaluated low-cost systems; however, performance was suboptimal or inconclusive. Here we evaluated a low-cost EEG system, OpenBCI, in a natural environment and leveraged neurofeedback, deep learning, and wider temporal windows to improve performance. $\mu-$rhythm data collected over th

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) seems opportune for neurofeedback in robot-assisted rehabilitation training due to its noninvasive, less physical restriction, and no electromagnetic disturbance. Previous research has proved the cross-session reliability of fNIRS responses to non-motor tasks (e.g., visual stimuli) and fine-motor tasks (e.g., finger tapping). However, it is still unknown whether fNIRS responses remain reliable 1) in gross-motor tasks, 2) within a training session, and 3) for different training parameters. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the within-session re

Increasing evidence showed that learned control of metabolic activity in selected brain regions can support emotion regulation. Notably, a number of studies demonstrated that neurofeedback-based regulation of fMRI activity in several emotion-related areas leads to modifications of emotional behavior along with changes of neural activity in local and distributed networks, in both healthy individuals and individuals with emotional disorders. However, the current understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying self-regulation of the emotional brain, as well as their relationship with other emot

OBJECTIVE: Low levels of alpha activity (8-13Hz) mirror a state of enhanced responsiveness, whereas high levels of alpha are a state of reduced responsiveness. Tinnitus is accompanied by reduction of alpha activity in the perisylvian regions compared to normal hearing controls. This reduction might be a key mechanism in the chain of reactions leading to tinnitus. We devised a novel spatial filter as an on-line source monitoring method, which can be used to control alpha activity in the primary auditory cortex. In addition, we designed an innovative experimental procedure to enable suppression

Increasingly, experiments designed to provide practical perturbations to circuits or behavior are required for hypothesis testing in various disciplines ranging from motor learning to recovery after injury. We present the implementation and efficacy of an open-source closed-loop neurofeedback (CLNF) and closed-loop movement feedback (CLMF) system. In CLNF, we measure mm-scale cortical mesoscale activity with GCaMP6s and provide graded auditory feedback (within ~63 ms) based on changes in dorsal-cortical activation within regions of interest (ROIs) and with a specified rule. Single or dual ROIs

The current study compared the effects of heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) and electroencephalographic biofeedback (EEG-BF) on sleep, mood, and reaction time. Fourteen highly trained male athletes with sleep disturbances participated in this randomised crossover study. Participants took part in HRV-BF and EEG-BF training, with each condition consisting of eight sessions over 15 days. Polysomnography (PSG) and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) were used to assess sleep quality, the profile of mood states (POMS) questionnaire to monitor mood, and reaction time to measure perfo

AIM: To assess the efficacy of a novel neurofeedback (NF) method, targeting limbic activity, to treat emotional dysregulation related to premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
METHODS: We applied a NF probe targeting limbic activity using a functional magnetic resonance imaging-inspired electroencephalogram model (termed Amyg-EFP-NF) in a double-blind randomized controlled trial. A frontal alpha asymmetry probe (AAS-NF), served as active control. Twenty-seven participants diagnosed with PMDD (mean age = 33.57 years, SD = 5.67) were randomly assigned to Amyg-EFP-NF or AAS-NF interventions wit

Chronic pain and depression are leading causes of disability, frequently co-occurring and exacerbating each other. This cross-sectional study investigated putative transdiagnostic processes of affective dysregulation in fibromyalgia (FMS) and major depressive disorder (MDD) using psychometric questionnaires (Beck Depression Inventory-II, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale, Widespread Pain Index, Somatic Symptom Disorder B Criteria Scale 12), ecological momentary assessments, and real-time functional magnetic resonance imagi

OBJECTIVES: Adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer is undeniably effective in increasing survival rates but many breast cancer survivors (BCS) exhibit side effects including nausea, fatigue, stress, and neurocognitive deficits, known as "chemobrain." This pilot study explored how neurotherapy, or EEG biofeedback, a non-pharmacological approach, improved neurocognitive, behavioral, and neurophysiological deficits associated with BCS who underwent chemotherapy.
METHODS: Subjects underwent 18 sessions of EEG biofeedback training, in which audio and visual feedback occurred with successful shift

Currently, various kinds of electrical stimulation equipment are used in the rehabilitation of muscle function for patients with hemiplegia, but many defects can be found in those designs, for example, insufficient feedback parameter, unsynchronized information, unintuitive display and so on. Therefore, this study introduces an electrical stimulation system with surface electromyography (sEMG) feedback based on LabVIEW, which combines with multi-channel sEMG acquisition, electrical stimulator and other hardware system. This system can not only provide a wide electrical stimulation parameters r
