OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of breast cancer in patients presenting with breast pain in Accra, Ghana.
DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study.

Specialized mammographic screenings of 61,276 industrial workers of the City of Perm and Perm Region were carried out in 1991-1999. Examinations included palpation, mammography and ultrasound (in some patients), aspiration biopsy and cytological analysis of nipple discharge, if necessary. Although reports on primary squamous cell carcinoma of the breast have been increasing in number, the morbidity rate of the disease is comparatively low. Experience with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast remains limited. MRI studies to date have shown that differentiation of carcinoma from certain benign breast changes can be difficult. The problem of suspected tumour recurrence in patients with known but treated breast carcinoma is considered. Seven cases of carcinoma of male breast were reported. The mean age of them was about 65 years, 17 years older than that of female breast cancer. Six tumors out of 7 were located under the areola. Malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast (MPTB) is a rare fibroepithelial tumor and very uncommon among young adult women. Due to an increasing number of breast cancer diagnoses in younger women anecdotally noted at our institution, we conceived of this study %was to retrospectively review the records of women diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 40 for potentially alterable versus unalterable risk factors in their history. Between 2007 and 2013, there were 52 patients less than 40 years of age with breast cancer at our institution: 79% (41/52) presented with a clinical abnormality (palpable mass, nipple discharge or inversion) and 21% (11/52) were asymptomatic but diagnosed on early screening mammograms.
