Effects of ofloxacin on nitrogen removal and microbial community structure in constructed wetland.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have emerged as a promising technology for the purification of micro-polluted water. However, their nitrogen removal performance can be significantly degraded by design, operational, and environmental factors. The present study investigates the effects of ofloxacin (OFL: 0.1, 10, and 1000 μg L-1) and plants (Cyperus alternifolius L. and Typha angustifolia L.) on nitrogen removal in a micro-polluted CW system over a duration of 12 weeks. The effects were evaluated by investigating NH4-N and NO3-N removal efficiency, nitrification genes (amoA-AOA and amoA-AOB), denitri

Ammonium-based fertilizers enhance Cd accumulation in Carpobrotus rossii grown in two soils differing in pH.

Nitrogen fertilization has been shown to improve Cd uptake by plants but there is little information on the effect of N form. This study examined the effects of N form on Cd bioavailability and phytoextraction in two soils differing in pH. Plants of halophytic species Carpobrotus rossii were grown in an acidic Sodosol [pH (CaCl2) 4.9] and a neutral Vertosol (pH 7.2) spiked with 20 mg kg-1 Cd as CdCl2. Three N forms, KNO3, (NH4)2SO4 and (NH2)2CO at a rate of 24 mg N kg-1 were applied at weekly intervals, together with nitrification inhibitor dicyanodiamide. Cadmium availability was measured, an

Metagenomic analysis of rapid gravity sand filter microbial communities suggests novel physiology of Nitrospira spp.

Rapid gravity sand filtration is a drinking water production technology widely used around the world. Microbially catalyzed processes dominate the oxidative transformation of ammonia, reduced manganese and iron, methane and hydrogen sulfide, which may all be present at millimolar concentrations when groundwater is the source water. In this study, six metagenomes from various locations within a groundwater-fed rapid sand filter (RSF) were analyzed. The community gene catalog contained most genes of the nitrogen cycle, with particular abundance in genes of the nitrification pathway. Genes involv

Light-driven algal-bacterial granular sludge enables high-rate anammox for mature landfill leachate treatment.

Mature landfill leachate with high NH₄⁺-N, low C/N and a need for deep nitrogen removal requires cost-effective solutions. In this study, an algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) system was developed to address the limitations associated with slow-growing anaerobic ammonium-oxidising bacteria (AnAOB) and establish a functionally diverse microbial consortium under low C/N, sulfate-containing conditions. After 150 days of operation with synthetic wastewater simulating mature landfill leachate, stable ABGS was obtained, comprising Chlorella, ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB), AnAOB, heterotrophic

Genome-Resolved Metagenomics Revealed the Functional Potential of Core Novel and Known Genera Key to Processes in Full-Scale Aerobic Granular Sludge Plants.

Microbial communities are critical for nutrient removal in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Despite the stable long-term operation of full-scale AGS WWTPs, the microbial populations and functional traits sustaining stable long-term performance remain poorly resolved. To address this gap, the recovered MAG catalog from nine full-scale AGS WWTPs across five countries was analyzed. From this catalog, 74 high-quality core MAGs were identified and used for downstream taxonomic characterization and functional analyses. These high-quality core MAGs spanned 48 establi

Process-Aware Deep Learning for Low-Cost Greenhouse Gas Sensing: Insights from Composting toward Scalable Anthropogenic Activities Applications.

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) monitoring is essential for mitigating emissions from anthropogenic activities, yet the deployment of high-precision analyzers remains constrained by cost and operational complexity. Low-cost GHGs sensors often suffer from signal drift, cross-sensitivity, and unstable responses under extreme temperature and humidity conditions. To address these challenges, GHGsNet was developed as a low-cost, process-aware deep learning framework for predicting CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions during composting, a representative high temperature and high humidity anthropogenic activity. GHGs

Deciphering Sulfur-Based Denitrification in Confined Alluvial-Lacustrine Aquifers through Multi-isotope (15N, 34S, 13C, and 18O) and Metagenomic Analyses.

Sulfur-based denitrification offers unique advantages in nitrogen removal in low-carbon environments. Despite its importance, the prevalence, controlling factors, and microbial mediators of sulfur-based denitrification in aquifers remain largely unknown. By integrating multiple stable isotopes and genome-resolved metagenomics, we investigated the coupling of nitrogen and sulfur cycling along the groundwater flowpath from unconfined to confined alluvial-lacustrine aquifers in the Poyang Lake Plain, China. Continental-scale characterization of pesticide cocktails in paddy soils: Associations with microbial community structure, function, and extracellular vesicle occurrence.

Modern agricultural practices lead to complex pesticide cocktails in paddy ecosystems, yet their extensive ecological associations with microbial communities and soil biogeochemical cycles remain largely uncharacterized under real-world conditions. Continental-scale investigation across 48 Chinese paddy regions revealed pervasive pesticide contamination, detecting 50 prevalent pesticide residues with widespread co-occurrence patterns (≥ 9 compounds at 90 % sites). Triazole fungicides correlated with suppression of nitrification, denitrification, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium

Feasibility of bioremediation of trichloroethylene contaminated sites by nitrifying bacteria through cometabolism with ammonia.

The autotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (Nitrosomonas sp.) are able to dechlorinate trichloroethylene (TCE) through cometabolism using ammonia (NH(3)) as a growth substrate. Cometabolic kinetics models suggest that TCE is a potent competitive inhibitor of NH(3) oxidation because it competes with NH(3) for oxidation by the enzyme of ammonia monooxygenase (AMO). In this study, an enriched culture of nitrifying bacteria was used to investigate the efficiencies of cometabolism of TCE by AMO. In addition, the relationships among specific growth substrate (NH(3)) utilization rate (qNH(3)), specif

Unveiling the microbial and metabolic mechanisms of a novel anaerobic/micro-aerobic/anoxic (AMA) strategy for nutrient removal and carbon utilization from low C/N high-strength ammonium wastewater.

Achieving cost-effective advanced nitrogen removal with minimal external carbon input remains a key challenge in wastewater treatment plants processing high-strength ammonium wastewater with a low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio. In this study, an anaerobic/micro-aerobic/anoxic (AMA) system was established to treat such wastewater at a C/N ratio of 2.5 by integrating simultaneous nitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and endogenous denitrification, collectively referred to as SNAED. The system achieved average removal efficiencies of 92.5% for NH4+-N, 89.9% for total nitrogen (

Decoupling nitrous oxide emissions from carbon footprint in full-scale completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite process: key drivers and sustainability assessment.

While the partial nitrification/anammox-based completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite (CANON) process offers substantial advantages for treating high-ammonium wastewater, significant nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions pose a challenge to its low-carbon sustainability. In this study, long-term field sampling and stable isotope analysis were conducted in a full-scale CANON process to evaluate N2O dynamics and the contributions of different pathways, as well as to perform a scenario-based carbon footprint assessment. The results showed that N2O emissions were low when hydroxylamine oxidat

Decoupled sulfonamide biodegradation and resistance gene responses in leachate treatment sludge.

Municipal solid waste leachate is an important sink of sulfonamides and resistance genes, yet the coupling between antibiotic removal and resistance-associated risks across exposure levels in leachate sludge remained unclear. Here, sludge from the primary (PNS) and secondary (SNS) nitrification units of a full-scale leachate treatment plant were exposed to a mixture of sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and trimethoprim (TMP) at 10 and 500 µg/l for each compound in batch experiments. At 10 µg/l, PNS and SNS removed 73.4 % of SDZ and 95.0 % of SMX, while TMP concentrations decreased be

Artificial light pollution alters epilithic microbial communities and functional biodeterioration-related functional potentials in subterranean sandstone environments.

Artificial light pollution represents an important anthropogenic disturbance in subterranean heritage environments, yet its associations with epilithic microbial communities and biodeterioration processes remain poorly understood. In tourist-accessible subterranean caves, artificial light creates persistent illuminated areas on stone surfaces that may alter microbial community assembly and biogeochemical functions associated with biofilm development. Here, the Longyou Grottoes, a large underground sandstone cave complex in Zhejiang, China, were investigated using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and m

Phosphorus additions imbalance terrestrial ecosystem C:N:P stoichiometry.

Carbon (C):nitrogen (N):phosphorus (P) stoichiometry in plants, soils, and microbial biomass influences productivity and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Anthropogenic inputs of P to ecosystems are increasing; however, our understanding of the impacts of P addition on terrestrial ecosystem C:N:P ratios remains elusive. By conducting a meta-analysis with 1413 paired observations from 121 publications, we showed that P addition significantly decreased plant, soil, and microbial biomass N:P and C:P ratios, but had negligible effects on C:N ratios. The reductions in N:P and C:P ratios b

Additive Effects of Multiple Global Change Drivers on Terrestrial Nitrogen Cycling Worldwide.

Global change has dramatically altered the Earth's biogeochemical cycles. However, the interactive effects of multiple global change factors (GCFs) on terrestrial nitrogen (N) cycling worldwide remain unclear, limiting the ability to predict how future global change will affect the global N cycle. We conducted a meta-analysis of 108 published articles to evaluate the main and interactive effects of elevated CO2, N addition, warming, and altered precipitation on soil N pools (NH4 +, NO3 -, and organic N) and transformation rates (N mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification) across terr
