It is suggested that lingually-positioned lower lateral incisors in young children are anatomically correct and not a symptom of crowding. Primary canines with intact periodontal attachments have an important role to play as proprioceptors to encourage growth of the alveolar arch. Extractions of primary cuspids would deprive the alveolus of important growth stimuli. Clinical evidence suggests that serial extraction is counter-productive. The early extraction of primary cuspids will invariably result in crowding of the permanent cuspids. It is a common belief that serial extraction corrects the

OBJECTIVE: To correlate dental measurements i.e. combined mesiodistal width of six maxillary anterior teeth with facial measurements i.e. inner canthal distance, interpupillary distance and intercommissural width and acquire a biometric ratio to serve as a preliminary guide in selection of the maxillary anterior teeth.
BACKGROUND: In the absence of pre-extraction records, the resultant denture can lead to patient dissatisfaction towards the aesthetic appeal of their dentures. The maxillary anterior teeth play a pivotal role in denture aesthetics. Various techniques and biometric ratios have b

OBJECTIVE: This study correlated the topographic relationship of the maxillary sinus floor to the roots of posterior teeth imaged by panoramic radiography and cross-sectional computed tomography (CT).
STUDY DESIGN: Paired panoramic radiographs and CT images of maxillae from 80 subjects were analyzed. A total of 422 maxillary roots were classified according to their topographic relationship to the maxillary sinus and measured according to their projection lengths on the sinus cavity for both imaging modalities. Correlations between the 2 radiographic techniques were examined statistically.

We performed computed tomography (CT) on 107 children and adolescents aged 9-15 years with 176 unerupted maxillary canines (152 erupting ectopically and 24 erupting normally) to determine whether there is an association between widened dental follicles of the maxillary canines and resorption of the adjacent incisors during eruption. Contiguous axial (transverse) CT scans were obtained through the maxilla in the region of the canines. The width and shape of the dental follicles were recorded, as were any contacts between the follicles and the crowns of the maxillary canines and neighboring inci

In dental implantology and virtual dental surgery planning using computed tomography (CT) images, the examination of the axes of neighboring and/or biting teeth is important to improve the performance of the masticatory system as well as the aesthetic beauty. However, due to its high connectivity to neighboring teeth and jawbones, a tooth and/or its axis is very elusive to automatically identify in dental CT images. This paper presents a novel method of automatically calculating individual teeth axes. The planes separating the individual teeth are automatically calculated using cost profile an

The success rate of immediate tooth replacement has been well documented in the literature. To achieve long-term success of dental implants, evaluation of the dimensions of the resorbing alveolar process must be accurate because an implant should be surrounded by at least 1 mm of bone. To minimize facial gingival recession, an intact labial bony plate along with an osseous-gingival relationship of 3 mm on the facial aspect of the failing tooth has been suggested. This article mentions a technique wherein the amount of available labial and palatal bone of an extracted socket can be assessed by

OBJECTIVES: To determine root lengths of fully developed permanent teeth of cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients and to define their crown-root (C/R) ratios.
METHOD: Crown height and root length of permanent teeth were measured from panoramic radiographs of 44 CLP patients and 37 controls. A total of 1397 teeth were measured, and C/R ratios were calculated.
RESULTS: Higher C/R ratios were found in CLP patients; this was statistically significant for both maxillary and mandibular incisors and canines. Bilateral CLP subjects showed higher C/R ratios in general than unilateral CLP subjects. Root

Comparison of individuals affected by chromosomal aneuploidies with controls has already confirmed the differential action of X and Y chromosomes during dental ontogeny. Permanent enamel and dentin structures are formed during the development of the dentition and these reflect the combined effects of both genetic and environmental factors during the prenatal and early postnatal period. It can provide key information on the effect of developmental assaults such as chromosomal aneuploidy as it is not subject to subsequent resorption or remodelling like other skeletal structures within the body.

The aim of the present study was to determine the dental and occlusal features that could contribute to the aetiology of palatally displaced canines (PDCs). The material consisted of pre-treatment dental casts of 50 patients (36 females and 14 males) with unilateral and bilateral PDCs aged 14-16 years (mean 15.6 +/- 1.6 years). These were compared with a control group of 50 treated subjects (25 males and 25 females) of the same age with normally erupted maxillary canines. The following parameters were measured on the dental casts: the mesiodistal (MD) and buccolingual (BL) width of each maxill

BACKGROUND: Radiographic diagnosis of the presence, position, and degree of third molar formation is a crucial part of integral treatment planning for the development of this tooth. Shortage of eruption space between lower second molar and the ramus has long been identified as a major factor in the etiology of lower third molar impaction. The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the validity of some angular and linear measurements made on digital panoramic imaging to be used as a reference for early prediction of lower third molar eruption or impaction.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the best time to begin orthodontic treatment for patients scheduled for implants to replace congenitally missing upper lateral incisors. The aim of timing is to maximize the amount of bone available for implant insertion and to improve incisors inclination.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-three plaster casts of 14 patients with 26 missing lateral incisors were cross sectioned in the center of the planned insertion of the implant, and the implant profile was projected into the area at three different times: T1--beginning of orthodontic treatment, T2-- end of orthodontic

OBJECTIVE: To determine the panoramic radiographic distance from the mandibular third molar tooth to the inferior alveolar canal.
STUDY DESIGN: Five hundred sixty mandibular third molars were evaluated by panoramic radiography. The teeth were grouped into erupted vs unerupted and further subdivided by tooth angulation. The distance from the most inferior aspect of the mandibular third molar tooth to the superior border of the inferior alveolar canal was measured with digital calipers. A t test was performed to compare erupted and unerupted teeth, and ANOVA was used to determine if a significa

BACKGROUND: One of the difficulties in assessing the causes of root resorption is to separate the contribution made by genetic factors from those due to environmental factors, such as treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic contribution to orthodontic root resorption.
METHODS: The subjects of this investigation were 16 monozygotic (MZ) and 10 dizygotic (DZ) twins. All twins had zygosity diagnosed using microsatellite analysis. Each twin-pair had same type of malocclusion, were treated with the same type of appliance, and by the same clinician. The lengths o

Acrocephalopolysyndactyly Type II (Carpenter Syndrome) is determined by autosomal recessive inheritance. Only some 40 cases have been described. Variable clinical signs have been described including prolonged retention of primary teeth and hypodontia. This paper describes the oral and dental findings in a family containing two affected brothers. The family pedigree is informative, as the mother has had children by three partners. The two affected individuals are full brothers. The first affected brother has delayed dental development, severe hypodontia and small tooth crown size. Mesio-distal
