BACKGROUND: Before the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination fixed orthodontic devices, such as brackets and wires, cause challenges not only for the orthodontist but also for the radiologist. Essentially, the MRI-safe scan of the fixed orthodontic tools requires a proper guideline in clinical practice. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to examine all aspects of MRI-safe scan, including artifact, thermal, and debonding effects, to identify any existing gaps in knowledge in this regard and develop an evidence-based protocol.

BACKGROUND: Mesial protraction of mandibular posterior teeth requires increased anchorage to avoid undesired tooth movements. Orthodontic mini-implants have become a popular and successful way to increase skeletal anchorage in such cases. However, mini-implants may cause injury to adjacent teeth or anatomical structures and may lead to tissue inflammation. Induced ankylosed primary teeth have been used in the past as abutments for the protraction of the maxilla in cases of maxillary retrognathism. However, this technique has not been described in the literature for the protraction of mandibula

OBJECTIVES: Clinical data on retaining extensively damaged teeth using forced orthodontic extrusion followed by restorative rehabilitation are scarce, and economic evaluations are basically absent. A health economic evaluation of this method was performed based on a clinical study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a convenience sample of individuals recruited from routine care, extensively damaged teeth were orthodontically extruded prior to restoration. Patients were followed up for up to 6 years. The health outcome was tooth retention time. Direct medical, non-medical, and indirect initial and fol

Regional odontodysplasia, or "ghost teeth," is a dental abnormality derived from both epithelial and mesenchymal components of the tooth bud. Teeth within a particular quadrant are affected. Affected teeth usually have thin enamel and dentin of poor quality with shortened roots, open apices, or enlarged pulp chambers. The permanent teeth and maxillary arch are observed to be more severely affected than primary teeth and the mandibular arch (ratio=1.6:1), respectively. Eruption of the affected teeth is delayed or may not happen. The cause of the phenomenon is unknown. Since this problem affects

Patients with a midline diastema smaller than 2 mm are often treated with orthodontic elastics applied on composite resin esthetic buttons bonded to incisors or incorporated in clear removable trays. However, these methods of applying elastics for diastema closure have shortcomings, including the additional clinical steps of etching the facial tooth surface and bonding for composite resin buttons; occlusal derangement and dependence on patient compliance for trays; and compromised esthetics for both treatment approaches. This article presents an alternative technique that overcomes the limitat

This report presents a case of a 12-year-old girl with maxillary deficiency, mandibular prognathism, and facial asymmetry, undergoing growth hormone (GH) therapy due to idiopathic short stature. Children of short stature with or without GH deficiency have a deviating craniofacial morphology with overall smaller dimensions; facial retrognathism, especially mandibular retrognathism; and increased facial convexity. However, a complete opposite craniofacial pattern was presented in our case of a skeletal Class III girl with idiopathic short stature. The orthodontic treatment goal was to inhibit or

The positioning of an impacted or retained tooth in either children or adults presents a real challenge for the two practitioners involved, the orthodontist and the surgeon in charge of the surgical exposure. The maxillary canine is the tooth most often impacted in the anterior segment, with a prevalence of 2% in the general population. One can understand, therefore, the functional and esthetic challenge for the surgical-orthodontic team whose aim will be to reposition the impacted or retained tooth in the arch. A large number of mistakes must be avoided in order to achieve a satisfactory resu

Root resorption after rapid palatal expansion (RPE) treatment was found in anchored teeth but has not been studied on non-anchored incisors. This study evaluated root resorption, root tipping, and root proximity of maxillary incisors after RPE treatment. Fourteen cats were divided into treated (n = 10) and untreated (n = 4) groups. The RPE treatment consisted of active, retention, and relapse phases, lasting 25, 60 and 60 d, respectively. Standardized occlusal radiographs were taken to measure tipping and root proximity before and after each treatment phase. Maxillary incisors were analysed hi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Orthodontic relapse is a physiologic process that involves remodelling of the alveolar bone and principle periodontal ligament fibres. Raloxifene is an Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved selective oestrogen receptor modulator that inhibits systemic bone loss. In our study, we examined the effects of Raloxifene on alveolar bone modelling and orthodontic relapse in a rodent model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The efficacy of raloxifene was evaluated in 15-week-old male Wistar rats, 8 in each group (Control, Raloxifene, Raloxifene + 7-day relapse, Raloxifene + 14-da

The aim of this study was to assess by means of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans the transverse effects on the nasomaxillary complex in patients submitted to rapid maxillary expansion (RME) using Haas expander in comparison to untreated individuals. This prospective controlled clinical study assessed 30 subjects (18 boys and 12 girls) with mixed dentition and during pubertal growth. The treated group was submitted to RME with Haas expander, retention for six months and a six-month follow-up after removal. The control group matched the treated group in terms of age and sex distributio

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the nasal airway changes following rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and fan-type RME using acoustic rhinometry (AR).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study sample consisted of three groups. The RME group comprised 15 subjects with maxillary transverse discrepancies and posterior crossbites. The fan-type RME group comprised 15 subjects, who had an anteriorly constricted maxilla with a normal intermolar width. The third group included 15 patients who had an ideal occlusion and received no orthodontic treatment and served as the control group. AR was used to measure n

UNLABELLED: Orthodontists frequently use elastomeric chains for space closure and incisor retraction, though these chains are prone to force degradation and permanent deformation over time. Initially introduced in the early 20th century, elastic power chains became more widely adopted in orthodontic practice in the 1960s due to industrial advancements. There are three main types of elastomeric chains: closed (continuous), open (short), and long (broad), available in various colors such as clear and black. Elastomeric chains generate forces for several orthodontic applications, including tracti

The relapse tendency of orthodontically rotated teeth after electrosurgical circumferential fiberotomies and after conventional scalpel blade surgical procedures was demonstrated with a split-mouth procedure involving the maxillary second incisors of five mongrel dogs. The second incisors were rotated orthodontically an average of 63.5 degrees over a 4-month period. Electrosurgical circumferential fiberotomies were performed on the designated second incisors, and circumferential fiberotomies with a scalpel blade were performed on the contralateral incisors. The teeth were retained for 1 month

Fused teeth may cause aesthetic, spacing, periodontal, eruption, and caries problems. The present case report describes a 7-year-old boy patient with a chief complaint of unerupted maxillary incisor. Radiographic examination indicated a fused tooth which had two fused roots but two independent root canals. A complex management of a fused tooth is really difficult to standardize. In this case an orthodontic, endodontic, and surgical treatment (intentional replantation) allowed the tooth to be retained until 18 years following intervention. Maintenance of the root and alveolar bone in young adul

Here, we report a case of dental implant treatment involving computer-assisted surgery for bilateral agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisors. The patient was a 39-year-old woman with the chief complaint of functional and esthetic disturbance due to maxillary and mandibular malocclusion. The treatment plan comprised non-extraction comprehensive orthodontic treatment and prosthodontic treatment for space due to the absence of bilateral maxillary lateral incisors. A preliminary examination revealed that the mesiodistal spaces left by the absent bilateral maxillary lateral incisors were too nar

Congenital absence of teeth, as the most commonly known developmental dental anomaly in man, has a multitude of adverse affects that could be detrimental to normal function and esthetics. This report presents a rare case of combined agenecies of maxillary permanent first molars and lateral incisors. The management plans are highlighted, and phase I orthodontic-restorative treatment mechanics and its result are described. The benefits for early orthodontic treatment intervention for this case presented here are discussed.
