Limited literacy revisited implications for patient education.

PURPOSE: It is important to determine whether teaching materials are understood and deemed accurate by the cancer patients being served. The authors used a series of patient participatory interviews to evaluate two brochures: Chemotherapy: What It Is and How It Helps by the American Cancer Society; and Helping Yourself During Chemotherapy: 4 Steps for Patients by the National Cancer Institute. The authors sought to determine whether 1) the brochures were clear; 2) differences in presentation were perceived by patients; and 3) differences influenced respondents' understanding and opinions of th

Evaluation of a Maternal Behavior Change Communication (MBCC) dental public health intervention on pregnant women to prevent early childhood caries in their infants: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Stronger maternal-fetal attachment contributes to less prenatal maternal mental stress and better pregnancy outcomes, ultimately leading to healthier mother-infant relationships and infants with far fewer cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal issues. The literature suggests that a lack of maternal factors, such as oral health knowledge and prenatal dental care utilization, is directly linked to the incidence of early childhood caries (ECC). The authors hypothesize that innovative maternal behavioral change communication (MBCC) interventions targeting pregnant mothers could help

Community Health workers United to Reduce Colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease among people at Higher risk (CHURCH): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most lethal cancer in the United States (U.S.) with the highest incidence and mortality rates among African Americans (AAs) compared to other racial groups. Despite these disparities, AAs are the least likely to undergo CRC screening, have precancerous colorectal polyps removed, and have CRC detected at stages early enough for curative excision. In addition, compelling evidence links inflammatory dietary patterns to increased CRC and cardiovascular disease risk. Studies show that AA churches can successfully engage in health promotion activitie

Prevention and control of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease: the Cuban experience (1986-1996-2002).

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) are still major medical and public health problems mainly in developing countries. Pilot studies conducted during the last five decades in developed and developing countries indicated that the prevention and control of RF/RHD is possible. During the 1970s and 1980s, epidemiological studies were carried out in selected areas of Cuba in order to determine the prevalence and characteristics of RF/RHD, and to test several long-term strategies for prevention of the diseases. METHODS: Between 1986 and 1996 we carried out a comprehen

Parental refusal to immunize a 2-month-old infant.

At a 2-month health supervision visit, Monica's pediatrician was surprised by her mother's wish to withhold immunizations. At prior encounters with her parents, including a prenatal visit, the meeting after Monica's birth, and the 2-week health supervision visit, there was no indication that standard immunizations would be refused. Monica's parents informed her pediatrician that the potential side effects from the immunization led them to think that their healthy child should not be immunized. After talking with other parents in the neighborhood, watching a television program on "children who

Barriers to care for patients with neurologic disease in rural Zambia.

The awesome burden of treatable yet untreated neurologic disease in the developing world presents a humanitarian crisis to those of us with neurologic expertise from more privileged situations. Although increased economic resources are critically needed, a shortage of personnel to care for these patients is as great a problem. It is neither feasible nor desirable to propose training neurologists to work in these regions. However, COs could be selected to receive additional training and return to their home regions to serve as resources for referrals and as community educators. Such a training

Evaluating the effectiveness and cost-benefit of a worksite mental health program among manufacturing workers: A study protocol for a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems lead to the loss of about 12 billion workdays worldwide each year. This creates a major economic burden. In food manufacturing, workers often face various psychosocial stressors. These include high workload, time constraint, repetitive tasks, and low autonomy. These conditions can affect both mental health and work performance. Workplace mental health interventions have shown promising results in mental health improvement. However, most studies come from high-income countries and service sectors. There is still limited evidence from industrial settings in mid

Using web-based CBT-I to improve sleep to prevent depression and anxiety in adolescents at high risk: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Among adolescents, internalizing disorders are a leading cause of the global burden of disability and death due to suicide. There is a critical need to prevent first-lifetime onsets of internalizing disorders, particularly among high-risk adolescents. Insomnia and poor sleep have been robustly linked to internalizing disorders in adolescents. The present trial will examine if brief, web-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) reduces insomnia symptoms, improves sleep quality, and improves subthreshold internalizing symptoms in never-clinically depressed or anxious a

Stakeholder perceptions of the acceptability of an intervention to improve uptake of evidence-based emergency myocardial infarction care in Tanzania: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is an increasing cause of morbidity and mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) but is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. To address this gap, the Multicomponent Intervention to Improve Myocardial Infarction Care (MIMIC) was developed and implemented to improve evidence-based AMI care. The aim of this study was to explore stakeholder perceptions of the acceptability of MIMIC following its implementation. METHODS: This qualitative study involved in-depth interviews with 20 key stakeholders (physicians, nurses, administrators, and patients diagnos

Effect of family-centred perioperative care for anaesthesia on the incidence of emergence delirium in children after surgery: a protocol for a randomised controlled trial in China.

INTRODUCTION: Emergence delirium (ED) stands out as a prevalent postoperative complication among paediatric patients, correlating with extended hospitalisation periods, escalated healthcare expenses and increased incidence of postoperative maladaptive behaviours (POMBs). Well-established pharmacological or non-pharmacological interventions demonstrating efficacy in reducing the occurrence of ED are notably absent. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the potential of family-centred perioperative care for anaesthesia (FPCA) in mitigating the incidence of ED in children compared with routine an

Improving communicative access and patient experience in acute stroke care: An implementation journey.

INTRODUCTION: Patient experience for people with aphasia/families in acute care is frequently reported as negative, with communication barriers contributing to adverse events and significant long-term physical and psychosocial sequelae. Although the effectiveness of providing supported communication training and resources for health care providers in the stroke system is well documented, there is less evidence of implementation strategies for sustainable system change. This paper describes an implementation process targeting two specific areas: 1) improving Stroke Team communication with patie

Effect of an avatar-based discharge education application on knowledge and behaviour in people after acute coronary syndrome: protocol for a pragmatic prospective randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Many hospital presentations for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) occur in people previously hospitalised with coronary heart disease (CHD), leading to increased costs and health burden. Secondary prevention education including a prehospital discharge plan is recommended for all individuals to reduce the risk of recurrence. However, many clinicians lack the time or support to provide education, and patients' uptake of secondary prevention programmes is limited. An avatar-based education app is a novel and engaging way to provide self-delivered, evidence-based secondary prevention inf
