Borderline Personality Disorder: Clinical Guidelines for Treatment.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is fundamentally a syndrome composed of symptoms (primarily of emotional dysregulation) and a number of true personality traits (such as inordinate anger, impulsivity, and a tendency to stress-related paranoid ideation). Whereas schizotypal personality disorder, with its cognitive peculiarities (ideas of reference, odd beliefs, eccentric speech), is closely linked as a genetic condition-"borderline" to the major condition schizophrenia-BPD is less closely linked to bipolar disorder. Some cases of BPD are linked genetically to and are in the "border" of bip

Toxoplasma gondii infection and schizophrenia: a case control study in a low Toxoplasma seroprevalence Mexican population.

There are conflicting reports concerning the association of Toxoplasma gondii infection and schizophrenia in humans. Therefore, we determined such association in a Mexican population of Mestizo ethnicity. Through a case-control study design, 50 schizophrenic patients and 150 control subjects matched by gender, age, residence place, and ethnicity were examined with enzyme-linked immunoassays for the presence and levels of T. gondii IgG antibodies and for the presence of T. gondii IgM antibodies. Schizophrenic patients attended a public psychiatric hospital in Durango City, Mexico, and the contr

Clozapine-induced leukopenia successfully treated with lithium.

PURPOSE: A case of clozapine-induced leukopenia successfully treated with lithium is reported. SUMMARY: A 55-year-old man with paranoid schizophrenia who had been stable on clozapine for more than 10 years was admitted to an inpatient behavioral health unit with leukopenia associated with clozapine use. This patient's history was significant for four previous hospitalizations for psychiatric issues, none of which occurred while he was using clozapine. On admission, the patient's clozapine was discontinued and he was started on olanzapine. On hospital day 4, his white blood cell (WBC) count ha

COVID-19 Pandemic on Fire: Evolved Propensities for Nocturnal Activities as a Liability Against Epidemiological Control.

Humans have been using fire for hundreds of millennia, creating an ancestral expansion toward the nocturnal niche. The new adaptive challenges faced at night were recurrent enough to amplify existing psychological variation in our species. Night-time is dangerous and mysterious, so it selects for individuals with higher tendencies for paranoia, risk-taking, and sociability (because of security in numbers). During night-time, individuals are generally tired and show decreased self-control and increased impulsive behaviors. The lower visibility during night-time favors the partial concealment of

Antipsychotic drugs versus cognitive behavioural therapy versus a combination of both in people with psychosis: a randomised controlled pilot and feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Little evidence is available for head-to-head comparisons of psychosocial interventions and pharmacological interventions in psychosis. We aimed to establish whether a randomised controlled trial of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) versus antipsychotic drugs versus a combination of both would be feasible in people with psychosis. METHODS: We did a single-site, single-blind pilot randomised controlled trial in people with psychosis who used services in National Health Service trusts across Greater Manchester, UK. Eligible participants were aged 16 years or older; met ICD-10 crit

[The efficacy of cognitive neurorehabilitation with RehaCom program in schizophrenia patients].

UNLABELLED: Schizophrenic patients present cognitive dysfunctions which are currently regarded to be one of endophenotypical markers predisposing to schizophrenia. This indicates neurostructural changes underlying schizophrenia, which can be treated as a neurodegenerative and neurodeveloping disease. AIM: The purpose of this study was to assess the possibility of neuropsychological rehabilitation in schizophrenia. METHODS: 41 participants and 40 control subjects were randomly selected and did not show differences in gender, age and illness duration. Both groups had the diagnosis of paranoid

Borderline personality features in childhood: a short-term longitudinal study.

Borderline personality disorder is a particularly devastating, yet understudied form of psychopathology. One of the most significant gaps in existing knowledge is the lack of systematic, prospective empirical attention to the developmental precursors of borderline personality. The present investigation was an exploratory attempt to address this limitation through (a) development of a psychometrically sound self-report instrument that assesses borderline personality features in childhood, the Borderline Personality Features Scale for Children (BPFS-C); (b) examination of the stability of BPF in

Assessment of Greek Smokers' Psychological Characteristics and Empathy While Smoking in Enclosed Public Spaces and Near Nonsmokers.

Background Smoking presents a strong association between emotional intelligence and increased anxiety and depression. Empathy is a form of perception where people feel the emotional states of others as their own. The act of smoking expresses indifference to social norms and the health of nonsmokers, which speaks to smokers' psychology. We conducted this study to identify the impact of smoking in psychology, empathy, and smoking behavior and examine the effect of smokers' psychological characteristics and empathy toward smoking in enclosed public spaces and in front of nonsmokers. Methodology A

Pitolisant-associated mania - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder treated with medications that promote wakefulness. Pitolisant, a histamine H3 receptor inverse agonist, is used to reduce excessive daytime sleepiness. Although pitolisant clinical trials describe mainly mild adverse effects, severe psychiatric reactions have been reported, yet detailed clinical descriptions remain limited. This case describes a first-onset manic episode with psychotic features shortly after pitolisant initiation in an adult without any psychiatric history, highlighting a rare but clinically significant potential reacti

Is the development of personality beliefs associated with levels of childhood traumas and emotional intelligence? A prospective cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders (PD) are associated with personality beliefs (PBs). Childhood traumas (CTs) and emotional intelligence (EI) are effective in the development of PDs. However, the relationships between CTs and EI and PBs are not well known. This study examined the effects of CTs and EI on PBs. METHOD: Three hundred and eighty-seven university students who applied to the psychiatry clinic and did not receive any psychiatric diagnosis according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) diagnostic criteria were recruited for the study. [Prisoners in units for difficult patients].

Prisoners, on remand or convicted, can be placed for a variable amount of time in a unit for difficult patients if their pathological mental state so requires. For the most part, their therapeutic care does not depend on their status as prisoner. The treatments provided are those indicated for their psychological pathologies and their potential or known dangerousness. However, some administrative measures make a distinction between their treatment and that of non-prisoner patients placed in these secure psychiatric units.

Comparing the Associations of Internet Addiction and Internet Gaming Disorder With Psychopathological Symptoms: Cross-Sectional Study of Three Independent Adolescent Samples.

BACKGROUND: Both internet gaming disorder (IGD) and internet addiction (IA) have been associated with diverse psychopathological symptoms. However, how the 2 conditions relate to each other and which is more strongly associated with psychopathology remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between IGD and IA and compare the strength of their associations with various types of psychopathological symptoms. METHODS: This cross-sectional study surveyed 3 independent samples of Chinese adolescents: the first sample (S1) comprised 8194 first-year undergraduates at a co

Paranoia, experiential avoidance, and narcissism as predictors of outcome in residential treatment of borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has suggested that residential treatment may be effective in reducing symptoms in patients with symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study examined whether paranoia, experiential avoidance, and narcissistic personality features predicted response to residential treatment in a cohort of female patients with symptoms of borderline personality disorder. METHOD: Participants were 87 women with borderline personality disorder symptoms who participated in multimodal residential treatment incorporating elements of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Men

Psychiatric dimensions in mothers of children with primary nocturnal enuresis: A controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: The etiology of primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) is not fully understood, but multifactorial factors have been associated with PNE. Parental factors, including attitudes to PNE, disciplinary behaviors, and psychiatric comorbidities in parents have been related to etiology of PNE, outcomes and the quality of life in children with enuresis. OBJECTIVE: We examined the psychopathology in mothers of children diagnosed with monosymptomatic PNE(MoPNE) compared with mothers of non-enuretic children (MoNEC) in terms of personality characteristics, early traumatic experiences, and psychia

The contribution of hypersalience to the "jumping to conclusions" bias associated with delusions in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Previous schizophrenia research involving the "beads task" has suggested an association between delusions and 2 reasoning biases: (1) "jumping to conclusions" (JTC), whereby early, resolute decisions are formed on the basis of little evidence and (2) over-adjustment of probability estimates following a single instance of disconfirmatory evidence. In the current study, we used a novel JTC-style paradigm to provide new information about a cognitive operation common to these 2 reasoning biases. METHODS: Using a task that required participants to rate the likelihood that a fisherman w

MDPV in forensic routine cases: Psychotic and aggressive behavior in relation to plasma concentrations.

The new psychoactive substance 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) belongs to the group of synthetic cathinones and is purchased mainly as "research chemical" or "bath salt" on the illegal drug market, also in South Bavaria. MDPV was detected in blood and urine samples from 2010 on in 50 authentic routine cases in a forensic setting. Plasma concentrations in 46 cases with available blood specimens ranged from approximately 1.0 to 301μg/L (median 23.7; mean 47.9μg/L), detected by a fully validated LC-MS/MS method. Subjects aged between 16 and 54 years (median 36; mean 35 years) and reflected
