Object recognition is shaped by the dynamic interplay between low-level contrast and high-level context.

Human perception relies on bottom-up sensory input and top-down prior knowledge, and object recognition is known to be modulated by the semantic relationship between objects and their surrounding context. However, the dynamic processing mechanism during object recognition and the resulting interaction between top-down and bottom-up factors remains unclear. The present study investigated how stimulus contrast modulates the effect of scene-object semantic congruency. Participants performed an object-recognition task in which target objects of high or low contrast appeared within semantically con

The bottom-up and top-down processing of faces in the human occipitotemporal cortex.

Although face processing has been studied extensively, the dynamics of how face-selective cortical areas are engaged remains unclear. Here, we uncovered the timing of activation in core face-selective regions using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Magnetoencephalography in humans. Processing of normal faces started in the posterior occipital areas and then proceeded to anterior regions. This bottom-up processing sequence was also observed even when internal facial features were misarranged. However, processing of two-tone Mooney faces lacking explicit prototypical facial features enga

Perimetry, visual evoked potentials and visual evoked spectrum array in homonymous hemianopsia.

Confrontation field examination, perimetry, visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to pattern hemi-field stimulation and visual evoked spectrum array to flash stimulation were compared in 50 patients with homonymous hemianopsia. Visual field could be examined by confrontation in all patients and demonstrated the field defect in 96% of cases. Goldmann perimetry could only be performed in 60% of patients, but always quantitatively defined the margins of the defect. VEPs could only be tested in 77% of patients and demonstrated an abnormality in 79% of cases. VEPs were absent to stimulation of the affect

Dynamic Representation of Multidimensional Object Properties in the Human Brain.

Our visual world consists of an immense number of unique objects and yet, we are easily able to identify, distinguish, and reason about the things we see within a few hundred milliseconds. Here, we used a large-scale and comprehensively sampled stimulus set and developed an analysis approach to capture how rich, multidimensional object representations unfold over time in the human brain. We modeled time-resolved MEG signals of four humans (two females and two males) viewing single presentations of tens of thousands of object images based on millions of behavioral judgments. Extracting behavior

Canonical and retinal size in visual working memory.

Visual working memory (VWM) is key to many daily tasks, such as remembering visual information about traffic when crossing a busy street. Despite extensive research, the extent to which VWM abstracts out sensory properties not relevant to identification, such as object size, remains unclear. In three experiments, we examined how object size affects VWM, with size defined in two ways: retinal size, referring to the image's size on the screen (small or large photos), and canonical size, referring to the typical size of objects in the real world, from big (e.g., a tower) to small (e.g., an egg).

From Visual Attention to Literacy: Symbol Search Deficit Predicts Future Reading Difficulties From Age 3.

Poor reading has been associated with impaired simultaneous visual processing of multiple graphic symbols composed of separable features, a behavioral marker of reduced visual attention based on parietal dysfunction. We designed a visual search screening test, consisting of finding the (unique) black circle among circles combined with a bar of various length and location (black symbols) versus among circles of various colors. The temporal Gap between these symbol and color search conditions was previously validated as a significant visuo-attentional contributor of reading between ages 8 and 11

Cortical activations for symmetry effect on visual word form perception in developmental dyslexia.

The ability to generalize across symmetric views is an essential feature of the human visual system. Poor readers often make mirror errors and struggle to distinguish between symmetrical letters, such as "b" and "d". Unlearning the mirror generalization is therefore crucial for developing proficient reading skills. Here we investigated the effect of symmetry on visual word form perception in developmental dyslexic (DD) and chronological age (CA)-matched typical juveniles. We employed real-, non-, jiagu- (precursors of modern Hanzi), and scrambled characters in Hanzi with symmetric or asymmetri

Impaired Ability in Visual-Spatial Attention in Chinese Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

A growing body of evidence suggests that children with dyslexia in alphabetic languages exhibit visual-spatial attention deficits that can obstruct reading acquisition by impairing their phonological decoding skills. However, it remains an open question whether these visual-spatial attention deficits are present in children with dyslexia in non-alphabetic languages. Chinese, with its logographic writing system, offers a unique opportunity to explore this question. The presence of visual-spatial attention deficits in Chinese children with dyslexia remains insufficiently investigated. Therefore,

Ramp-shaped neural tuning supports graded population-level representation of the object-to-scene continuum.

We can easily perceive the spatial scale depicted in a picture, regardless of whether it is a small space (e.g., a close-up view of a chair) or a much larger space (e.g., an entire class room). How does the human visual system encode this continuous dimension? Here, we investigated the underlying neural coding of depicted spatial scale, by examining the voxel tuning and topographic organization of brain responses. We created naturalistic yet carefully-controlled stimuli by constructing virtual indoor environments, and rendered a series of snapshots to smoothly sample between a close-up view of

The Spatiotemporal Neural Dynamics of Object Recognition for Natural Images and Line Drawings.

Drawings offer a simple and efficient way to communicate meaning. While line drawings capture only coarsely how objects look in reality, we still perceive them as resembling real-world objects. Previous work has shown that this perceived similarity is mirrored by shared neural representations for drawings and natural images, which suggests that similar mechanisms underlie the recognition of both. However, other work has proposed that representations of drawings and natural images become similar only after substantial processing has taken place, suggesting distinct mechanisms. To arbitrate betw

Human frontoparietal cortex represents behaviorally relevant target status based on abstract object features.

Searching for items that are useful given current goals, or "target" recognition, requires observers to flexibly attend to certain object properties at the expense of others. This could involve focusing on the identity of an object while ignoring identity-preserving transformations such as changes in viewpoint or focusing on its current viewpoint while ignoring its identity. To effectively filter out variation due to the irrelevant dimension, performing either type of task is likely to require high-level, abstract search templates. Past work has found target recognition signals in areas of ven

Shape-independent object category responses revealed by MEG and fMRI decoding.

Neuroimaging research has identified category-specific neural response patterns to a limited set of object categories. For example, faces, bodies, and scenes evoke activity patterns in visual cortex that are uniquely traceable in space and time. It is currently debated whether these apparently categorical responses truly reflect selectivity for categories or instead reflect selectivity for category-associated shape properties. In the present study, we used a cross-classification approach on functional MRI (fMRI) and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data to reveal both category-independent shape r

When is it time to move to the next map? Optimal foraging in guided visual search.

Suppose that you are looking for visual targets in a set of images, each containing an unknown number of targets. How do you perform that search, and how do you decide when to move from the current image to the next? Optimal foraging theory predicts that foragers should leave the current image when the expected value from staying falls below the expected value from leaving. Here, we describe how to apply these models to more complex tasks, like search for objects in natural scenes where people have prior beliefs about the number and locations of targets in each image, and search is guided by t

Change in visual acuity is well correlated with change in image-quality metrics for both normal and keratoconic wavefront errors.

We determined the degree to which change in visual acuity (VA) correlates with change in optical quality using image-quality (IQ) metrics for both normal and keratoconic wavefront errors (WFEs). VA was recorded for five normal subjects reading simulated, logMAR acuity charts generated from the scaled WFEs of 15 normal and seven keratoconic eyes. We examined the correlations over a large range of acuity loss (up to 11 lines) and a smaller, more clinically relevant range (up to four lines). Nine IQ metrics were well correlated for both ranges. Over the smaller range of primary interest, eight we

Phase changes induced by optical aberrations degrade letter and face acuity.

Optical aberrations of the eye reduce image contrast and induce spatial phase shifts in the retinal image. The resulting degradation of retinal image quality hampers recognition of complex objects such as letters and faces. To study the effects of spatial phase shifts on object recognition, we simulated image blur computationally for 4 types of aberrations (defocus, astigmatism, coma, and spherical aberration) present individually or in combinations. Phase errors in the computed images were corrected (by setting phase to zero), or avoided, by removing the affected frequency components (by sett

Flicker-light induced visual phenomena: frequency dependence and specificity of whole percepts and percept features.

Flickering light induces visual hallucinations in human observers. Despite a long history of the phenomenon, little is known about the dependence of flicker-induced subjective impressions on the flicker frequency. We investigate this question using Ganzfeld stimulation and an experimental paradigm combining a continuous frequency scan (1-50 Hz) with a focus on re-occurring, whole percepts. On the single-subject level, we find a high degree of frequency stability of percepts. To generalize across subjects, we apply two rating systems, (1) a set of complex percept classes derived from subjects'

Spatially asymmetric response to moving patterns in the visual cortex: re-examining the local sign hypothesis.

One of the most fundamental functions of the visual system is to code the positions of objects. Most studies, especially those using fMRI, widely assume that the location of the peak retinotopic activity generated in the visual cortex by an object is the position assigned to that object-this is a simplified version of the local sign hypothesis. Here, we employed a novel technique to compare the pattern of responses to moving and stationary objects and found that the local sign hypothesis is false. By spatially correlating populations of voxel responses to different moving and stationary stimul

Selective impairment of facial recognition due to a haematoma restricted to the right fusiform and lateral occipital region.

A 67 year old right handed Japanese man developed prosopagnosia caused by a haemorrhage. His only deficit was the inability to perceive and discriminate unfamiliar faces, and to recognise familiar faces. He did not show deficits in visual or visuospatial perception of non-facial stimuli, alexia, visual agnosia, or topographical disorientation. Brain MRI showed a haematoma limited to the right fusiform and the lateral occipital region. Single photon emission computed tomography confirmed that there was no decreased blood flow in the opposite left cerebral hemisphere. The present case indicates
