Narcissistic personality disorder: a current review.

The diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder in the DSM-IV has been criticized foremost for its limitations in capturing the range and complexity of narcissistic pathology. The attention to the narcissistic individual's external, symptomatic, or social interpersonal patterns--at the expense of his or her internal complexity and individual suffering--has also added to the diagnosis' low clinical utility and limited guidance for treatment. Recent studies and reviews have pointed to the need for change in the diagnostic approach to and formulation of narcissism. This review focuses specific

[Personality characteristics of hypertensive patients].

Essential hypertension, as well-known specialists believe, is due both to genetic and external environment factors. Apart from the steadily growing complexity of social life and various important life events, high-risk factors may also be seen in a certain way of behaviour and man's psychophysiological reactivity. Recent literature on this topic informs about some common characteristics found in the behaviour of hypertensive persons, for example: anxiety in social contacts, suppressed hostility, manifestations of perfectionism, suppression of emotions, exaggerated behavioral adaptability and d

Eating disorders and personality: a methodological and empirical review.

Methodological approaches utilized to evaluate models of the relationship between personality and eating disorders, as well as empirical support for each model, are reviewed. Limited prospective research suggests that negative emotionality, perfectionism, drive for thinness, poor interoceptive awareness, ineffectiveness, and obsessive-compulsive personality traits are likely predisposing factors. Limited family study research suggests that obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) and anorexia nervosa share a common familial liability. Potential pathoplastic personality factors include

The role of age and gender in the relationship between personality traits, quality of life, and decision-making about orthognathic surgery-A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how age and gender shape the relationship between personality traits, quality of life (QoL), and a patient's decision to undergo surgery for correction of dentofacial deformity. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 108 individuals aged 14-53 years (median age 18 years; interquartile range 17-26) with a moderate to very great need for surgery according to the Index of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Need were assessed. There were 43% adolescents (≤17 years) and 68% females. Participants completed validated questionnaires measuring personality characteristics (Big Five I

Using network analysis to compare diagnosis-specific and age-specific symptom networks in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The network theory of mental disorders conceptualizes eating disorders (EDs) as networks of interacting symptoms. Network analysis studies in EDs mostly have examined transdiagnostic and/or mixed age samples. The aim of our study was to investigate similarities and differences of networks in adolescents and adults with anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD: Participants were 2,535 patients (n = 991 adults with AN, n = 821 adolescents with AN, n = 473 adults with BN, and n = 250 adolescents with BN) who completed the Eating Disorder Inventory-2. Psychodiagnostics: Classification of the Yips Phenomenon based on Musician's Dystonia.

PURPOSE: Similar to musician's focal dystonia, a task-specific phenomenon known as yips, has also been reported in professional athletes. Yips is usually described as focal dystonia, or choking under pressure, or as lying on a continuum between both. Based on the common occupational conditions across musicians and athletes, the present exploratory study aimed to investigate whether musicians diagnosed with focal dystonia and golfers affected with yips, can be similarly subclassified based on their psychological profiles. METHODS: Twenty healthy musicians, 20 musicians with focal dystonia, 20

Measuring Compulsivity as a Self-Reported Multidimensional Transdiagnostic Construct: Large-Scale (N = 182,000) Validation of the Cambridge-Chicago Compulsivity Trait Scale.

Compulsivity has potential transdiagnostic relevance to a range of psychiatric disorders, but it has not been well-characterized and there are few existing measures available for measuring the construct across clinical and nonclinical samples that have been validated at large population scale. We aimed to characterize the multidimensional latent structure of self-reported compulsivity in a population-based sample of British children and adults (N = 182,145) using the Cambridge-Chicago Compulsivity Trait Scale (CHI-T). Exploratory structural equation modeling provided evidence for a correlated

Psychiatric Comorbidity Among Eating Disorders and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Underlying Shared Mechanisms and Features: An Updated Review.

Eating disorders (EDs) are highly comorbid with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), with comorbidity rates as high as 41%. In the current review, we summarize the literature regarding the prevalence of ED-OCD comorbidity. We also identify and review the literature assessing shared features (i.e., shared characteristics or symptoms) and mechanisms (i.e., variables that may explain ED or OCD symptoms) of EDs and OCD. Potential shared features of EDs and OCD include age of onset, course of illness, obsessions, compulsions and ritualistic behaviors, and thought action fusion. Shared mechanisms th

Psychological Risk Factors for the Development of Restrictive and Bulimic Eating Behaviors: A Polish and Vietnamese Comparison.

The aim of this paper is to identify psychological factors which are culture specific or common predictors for restrictive and bulimic behaviors towards eating for young women raised in different cultures. The study included 661 young women from Poland (n = 233) and Vietnam (n = 428). Subjects filled-in the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI-3) and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS), and body measurements were collected to calculate anthropometric indices. Women form Vietnam were less satisfied with their appearance than were their Polish peers, bu

Eating disorders and concurrent psychopathology: a reconceptualisation of clinical need through Rasch analysis.

Therapies for anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED) and eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) take as their focus, perhaps of necessity, the eating disorder symptomatology. However, there is increasing evidence of comorbidity of psychopathological mechanisms (e.g. perfectionism, depression) with eating disorders which, left untreated, may diminish any therapeutic effects. Thus identifying the extent of comorbidity in an eating disorder population and assessing the relationship between psychopathological mechanisms and the eating disorder is importan

Further investigation of the Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire: factor structure and specificity of relations with OCD symptoms.

Cognitive models of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) posit that certain beliefs are important to the development and maintenance of OCD symptoms. The Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire (OBQ) is a new measure developed to assess these beliefs. Supported by initial research, this study further examined the OBQ, focusing on structural issues and its relations with OCD and other symptoms. Results were that previous 3- and 4-factor models did not fit the current data adequately using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). However, a modified 3-factor model was generated using exploratory factor analys

[Bulimia nervosa].

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a relatively new syndrome occurring particularly in young women. The gender ratio is about 10:1. The disease is becoming more common especially in the Scandinavian countries. The symptoms are episodes of binge eating followed by weight regulation. Generally, weight reduction is the provoking factor. The disease is estimated to occur in 3-5% of Danish women between the age of 14 and 24 years, but also in an unknown number of older women. Several factors increase the risk of BN: high body mass index, sociocultural circumstances, such as a "drive for thinness", and psychop

NoiBene, a Group Intervention for Promoting Mental Health Among University Students: A Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

University students' mental health has become a public health issue since increasingly students report high levels of psychological distress. Mental health difficulties influence students' lives, such as academic performance, relationships satisfaction, and quality of life. Moreover, different kinds of obstacles often hinder help-seeking behavior. Such evidence strongly suggests the need to implement prevention and promotion strategies to increase health and well-being in educational contexts. This article presents a study protocol for implementing and evaluating NoiBene, an evidence-based gro

Threatening Beliefs About Self and Others Moderate the Association Between Psychoticism and Psychological Distress.

Psychoticism is a multidimensional personality construct involving odd or eccentric behavior, quasi-psychotic experiences, mistrust, interpersonal detachment, and liability for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, as well as significant distress. Recent advances suggest it can be understood as a dimension that is continuously distributed in the population, leading to questions about factors that contribute to distress and dysfunction among people with a schizotypal liability. We investigated in a large nonclinical sample of young adults whether associations between psychoticism and psychological

A Hierarchical Personality Approach Toward a Fuller Understanding of Onychophagia and Compulsive Buying.

PURPOSE: Employing a hierarchical model of personality, prior research suggests that cardinal traits such as conscientiousness and agreeability predict central traits such as materialism and need for arousal that in turn impact surface traits such as onychophagia and compulsive buying. More research is needed to explore additional central traits and their effect on onychophagia and compulsive buying. Thus, the goal of the current research is to examine how another central trait-negative perfectionism-impacts onychophagia and compulsive buying. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A survey was adminis

Public Recognition and Perceptions of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Previous research has indicated that the public's knowledge on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is poor. Public understanding and perception of OCD may be one contributor to this issue. Given that mental health literacy is an important first step for those to receive the appropriate care, we sought to understand more about the public's awareness and perceptions of OCD. Data regarding knowledge of OCD were collected through a New York statewide telephone survey (N = 806). Results indicated that those who had never heard of OCD were more likely to be ethnic minorities, have a lower income, an

Adaptive and maladaptive personality traits in high-risk gamblers.

Gambling Disorder (GD) is an addictive disorder resulting in significant impairment in occupational and social functioning. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship of GD risk to adaptive and maladaptive personality dimensions in a sample of nonreferred Italian gamblers. The authors found the risk for GD to show significant associations with the Openness and Conscientiousness scales of the Big Five Inventory (BFI); however, these effects were not significant after controlling for alcohol and drug use. GD risk showed significant associations with the Detachment and Antag

Psychological traits and the cortisol awakening response: results from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation is often seen in major depression, and is thought to represent a trait vulnerability - rather than merely an illness marker - for depressive disorder and possibly anxiety disorder. Vulnerability traits associated with stress-related disorders might reflect increased sensitivity for the development of psychopathology through an association with HPA axis activity. Few studies have examined the association between psychological trait factors and the cortisol awakening response, with inconsistent results. The present study examine

A critical analysis of psychological mechanisms that compete with health goals.

Despite widespread health awareness, individuals consistently struggle to maintain healthy behaviors. Traditional approaches have attributed compliance failure to personal weaknesses in knowledge, motivation, self-regulation, and external support. This paper challenges the individual deficit paradigm by critically analyzing how fundamental psychological needs compete with health goals. Using self-determination theory, this paper identified 10 mechanisms that legitimately interfere with health behaviors. Four mechanisms protect autonomy through temporal discounting, learned helplessness, health

Patterns of menstrual disturbance in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To describe menstrual disturbance in eating disorders (ED). METHOD: We describe menstrual history in 1,705 women and compare eating, weight, and psychopathological traits across menstrual groups. RESULTS: Menstrual dysfunction occurred across all eating disorder subtypes. Individuals with normal menstrual history and primary amenorrhea reported the highest and lowest lifetime body mass index (BMI), respectively. Normal menstruation and oligomenorrhea groups reported greater binge eating, vomiting, and appetite suppressant use. Amenorrhea was associated with lower caloric intake an
