Patient-specific prediction of regional lung mechanics in patients with ARDS with physics-based models: a validation study.

Lung-protective ventilation significantly influences outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), but identifying optimal settings remains a challenge due to pronounced inter- and intrapatient variability in lung anatomy and pathophysiology. This study demonstrates that physics-based computational lung models tailored to individual patients can predict otherwise unobservable local lung states, enabling a quantitative analysis of regional ventilation and the mechanical load experienced by lung parenchyma during ventilation. For seven mechanically ventilated patients wit

Lunch box and fruits as a simulator for teaching basic physics of ultrasound: A mixed research methods study.

AIM: To develop and evaluate a practical, low-cost ultrasound training simulator for teaching basic ultrasound physics and knobology, including probe orientation, tissue impedance, essential hand movements, and recognizing image artifacts while observing scanned objects. METHODS: The simulator consists of (1) one complete lemon, (2) half a lemon, (3) half a kiwi fruit, and (4) an avocado pit. These objects were secured inside a plastic box using screws, nails and double-sided foam tape, after which the box was filled with water. The estimated total cost was less than 15 US dollars. The simula

Thermal fault detection of lithium-ion battery packs through an integrated physics and deep neural network based model.

Battery packs develop faults over time, many of which are difficult to detect early. For instance, cooling system blockages raises temperatures but may not trigger alerts until protection limits are exceeded. This work presents a model-based method for early thermal fault detection and identification in battery packs. By comparing measured and estimated temperatures, the method identifies faults including failed sensors, coolant pump malfunctions, and flow blockages. The core is a high-accuracy temperature estimation model, integrating a physics-based thermal model with a neural network, achie

EPINN-GF: An enhanced physics-informed neural network integrating geometric features for stress prediction in complex spinal geometries.

BACKGROUND: Understanding spinal biomechanics is essential for exploring the functions of the spine and the pathogenesis of related diseases. Traditional numerical methods for biomechanical analysis are computationally expensive, while Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) struggles with complex solid geometries. This study develops an Enhanced Physics-Informed Neural Network that integrates Geometric Features (EPINN-GF) to address these limitations in predicting stress distribution for the complex spinal geometries. STUDY OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study is to improve both th

Future research perspective on the interfacial physics of non-invasive glaucoma testing in pathogen transmission from the eyes.

Non-contact tonometry (NCT) is a non-invasive ophthalmologic technique to measure intraocular pressure (IOP) using an air puff for routine glaucoma testing. Although IOP measurement using NCT has been perfected over many years, various phenomenological aspects of interfacial physics, fluid structure interaction, waves on corneal surface, and pathogen transmission routes to name a few are inherently unexplored. Research investigating the interdisciplinary physics of the ocular biointerface and of the NCT procedure is sparse and hence remains to be explored in sufficient depth. In this perspecti

Examining impact forces during posterior spinal fusion to implement in a novel physics-driven virtual reality surgical simulator.

This study aims to understand the impact forces that surgeons apply to the human spine during a posterior spinal fusion procedure towards the development of a novel spine surgical simulator for training medical residents. The foci of this study are impact forces during graft placement and spinal interbody cage insertion. This study examined the lumbar intervertebral discs of two male cadaveric specimens. Impact forces were collected during graft and spinal cage insertion over multiple levels. An impulse hammer and a camera were used to collect impact forces and displacements, respectively. The

Physics contributions and clinical outcome with 3D-MRI-based pulsed-dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy in cervical cancer patients.

PURPOSE: To assess the physics contributions and clinical outcome with three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging-guided pulsed-dose-rate (PDR) intracavitary brachytherapy in cervical cancer patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The data from 45 patients with primary locally advanced cervical carcinoma were analyzed. The median tumor cervical volume was 64.0 cm(3) (range, 3-178). Of the 45 patients, 24 (53%) had histologic and/or radiologic pelvic involvement. After pelvic with or without para-aortic concomitant chemoradiotherapy, a PDR brachytherapy boost was delivered to a three-dimensional ma

In situ measurement and modeling of biomechanical response of human cadaveric soft tissues for physics-based surgical simulation.

BACKGROUND: Development of a laparoscopic surgery simulator that delivers high-fidelity visual and haptic (force) feedback, based on the physical models of soft tissues, requires the use of empirical data on the mechanical behavior of intra-abdominal organs under the action of external forces. As experiments on live human patients present significant risks, the use of cadavers presents an alternative. We present techniques of measuring and modeling the mechanical response of human cadaveric tissue for the purpose of developing a realistic model. The major contribution of this paper is the deve

Physical Therapy.

Physical therapy has the evidence-based science knowledge to address a wide range of physical and psychological problems of addiction. Neuromodulation techniques are becoming more and more important in the treatment of addiction. Here, the efficacy of different neuromodulation techniques in addiction, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), is critically evaluated. Other physical therapy methods including Biofeedback, Physical Activity and Acupuncture are also presented.

Physical urticaria.

The physical urticarias are a heterogeneous subgroup of chronic urticarias in which wheals can be reproducibly induced by different specific physical stimuli such as cold, heat, pressure, vibration, or sunlight. Physical urticarias comprise up to 25 % of chronic urticarias and occur more frequently in young adults. Symptoms, i.e. wheal and flare responses or angioedema, are usually limited to the skin areas exposed to the eliciting stimulus. However, generalised urticaria with variable extracutaneous manifestations can also occur. Some patients may also present with more than one physical urti

[Physical urticaria].

The different types of physical urticaria are triggered by mechanical and thermal stimuli, as well as electromagnetic waves. Localized forms restricted to the skin and mucous membranes are most common, but generalized urticaria with variable extracutaneous manifestations can also occur. Physical urticaria is usually sporadic but may rarely have a familial form; it is often associated with chronic urticaria. In most instances, the short time interval between the physical stimulus and reaction points to a causal relationship, but in delayed types the exact diagnosis may be missed without provoca

Physical urticarias.

Chronic urticaria can be produced by a number of stimuli that cause mast cell mediator release. Patients with urticaria caused by physical agents account for roughly one-fifth of all cases of chronic urticaria. There are about 20 different types of physical urticaria. Two forms, dermographism and cholinergic urticaria, are quite common and represent more than two-thirds of all cases of physically caused urticaria. More than one agent may precipitate urticaria in a given individual. Urticarial response can be easily reproduced in the sensitive patient and, generally, lasts less than one hour. S

Physical allergies.

Allergic responses that occur as a result of exposure to physical stimuli are discussed. Most of these conditions are mediated by vasoactive substances, resulting in urticaria and/or angioedema. Susceptible individuals who engage in athletic activities may place themselves at particular risk for these problems. The physical allergies include cholinergic urticaria, exercise-induced anaphylaxis, cold urticaria, dermatographism, solar urticaria, and aquagenic urticaria. Management of these conditions includes patient education, selective avoidance, antihistamines, and, in some cases, induction of

The physical examination.

The physical examination begins as soon as the patient enters the operatory and continues throughout the various stages of the diagnostic process. It includes an evaluation of the vital signs, head and neck, and other areas of the body readily observed by the astute clinician, and the structures of the oral cavity. A deliberate and systematic examination will permit the clinician maximum opportunity to detect and identify irregularities and abnormalities that will increase or decrease the diagnostic options.

Physical urticaria.

Physical urticarias are a unique subgroup of chronic urticaria in which patients develop urticaria secondary to environmental stimuli. Common triggers include exercise, temperature changes, cold, heat, pressure, sunlight, vibration, and water. Systemic symptoms have occurred during severe episodes. Physical urticarias are responsible for approximately 20% to 30% of all cases of chronic urticaria. A basic knowledge of these unusual disorders is important for all healthcare providers. This article covers the following types of physical urticarias: dermatographism, cholinergic urticaria, local he

[Physical urticarias].

Ten percent of chronic urticarias are physical urticarias. Patients suffering from physical urticaria all have a suggestive history with specific eliciting stimuli (cold, heat, water, sun.) and wheals in the areas where the stimulus acts. The involved pathomechanisms are not well known. An unknown allergen (related to a cold or a heat injury, a polar molecule contained in the stratum corneum and soluble into water, a photoallergen) could induce a mast cell mediator release, followed by an infiltration by eosinophil then neutrophils polymorphonuclears. T-cells are not highly involved. Dermograp
