Reduction in pollinator abundance (predominantly honeybees) stemming from environmental and chemical stressors notably neonicotinoid pesticides poses serious threats to biodiversity and agricultural productivity. This study presents a scalable machine learning framework to foresee honey yield and assess the impact of neonicotinoid exposure. Drawing upon a curated dataset, of 825 records encompassing 16 agro-environmental and chemical parameters including colony counts, yield metrics, and pesticide residue concentrations. Subsequently, we assessed 13 classification models, marked improvement wa

Broflanilide, a widely used meta-diamide insecticide, poses severe environmental risks to honeybees (Apis mellifera L.), yet its toxic mechanisms remain unclear. Here we demonstrate that broflanilide functions as a pro-insecticide in honeybees, requiring metabolic activation to exert its potent toxicity. Its N-demethylated metabolite (II-03) exhibits 24,000-fold stronger inhibition of the honeybee GABA receptor RDL and 10-fold higher acute toxicity than the parent compound, suggesting that metabolic activation is a critical step underlying honeybee poisoning. Further mechanistic studies reveal

The honeybee Apis cerana as an important pollinator contributes significantly to ecological diversity. In recent years, it has been used as a common pollinator in greenhouses, but it is highly susceptible to heat stress, which affects its behavior, physiology, survival, and gene expression. Here, we conducted transcriptomic analysis to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and reveal the associated biological processes in the queen head and ovary of honeybee A. cerana under different temperatures. Differential expression analysis revealed 116 DEGs (72 upregulated, 44 downregulated) in

Urban gardening, particularly through food-producing green spaces, is increasingly recognized as a key strategy for addressing the complex challenges of climate change, food insecurity, biodiversity loss, and social inequity in African cities. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from 47 peer-reviewed studies across sub-Saharan Africa between 2000-2025 to analyze how urban home gardens, rooftop farms, and agroforestry systems contribute to sustainable urban development. The protocol follows PRISMA guidelines and focuses on (i) plant species selection for ecological resilience, (ii) inte

There is emerging concern regarding the unintentional and often unrecognized antimicrobial properties of "non-antimicrobial" pesticides. This includes insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides commonly used in agriculture that are known to produce broad ranging, off-target effects on beneficial wildlife, even at seemingly non-toxic low dose exposures. Notably, these obscure adverse interactions may be related to host-associated microbiome damage occurring from antimicrobial effects, rather than the presumed toxic effects of pesticides on host tissue. Here, we critically review the literature on

BACKGROUND: Sublethal exposure to neonicotinoids, a popular class of agricultural pesticides, can lead to behavioral effects that impact the health of pollinators. Therefore, new compounds, such as flupyradifurone (FPF), have recently been developed as 'safer' alternatives. FPF is an excitotoxic nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist, similar to neonicotinoids. Given the novelty of FPF, what data exist are focused mostly on assessing the effect of FPF on pollinator mortality. One important avenue for investigation is the potential effect of FPF on the sensitivity of nectar foragers, such as

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: One proposed function of long styles is to intensify selection among male gametophytes relative to short styles. If so, given sufficient competition, longer styles will have higher rates of pollen tube attrition (failure to reach the style base) within the style than shorter ones. Alternatively, style length may influence pollen receipt, which itself may affect attrition rates.
METHODS: We tested these predictions by collecting senescing styles from wild populations of two insect-pollinated Clarkia species. We examined the number of pollen grains adhering to the stigma,

Serum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) levels increase in inflammation processes with activation of eosinophils. We studied serum ECP in (I) 32 pollinic children without symptoms, in June and October and (II) 10 children with acute asthma crisis. As control groups we included (III) 25 children sent to the hospital with suspected allergic diseases in which an IgE mediated process could be ruled out; (IV) 34 coeliac patients; (V) 15 children with cystic fibrosis and (VI) 48 normal children. The pollinic children had increased figures of ECP in June (21.2 +/- 9.2 micrograms/L) compared to normal

The 31st Annual Meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Immunology provided an excellent platform for basic and clinical scientists to brainstorm on current reproductive health issues such as repeated implantation and pregnancy failure, preterm birth, preeclampsia and genital tract infections such as HIV. The goal of the meeting was to foster cross-pollination of ideas as well as to encourage participation of young investigators in the field. The conference was preceded by the 4th Annual Post-Graduate Workshop with the theme of bringing bedside problems to the bench and facilitating c

Self-incompatibility (SI) is a system used by flowering plants to prevent self-fertilization and promote outbreeding, ensuring genetic diversity. The system is regulated molecularly by the single polymorphic S-locus that expresses the male and female determinants that interact, inhibiting pollen germination or pollen tube growth when pollen from the same plant or genetically similar individuals reaches the stigma. Knowing the self-incompatible phenotype among cultivars is fundamental to ensuring fruit set or obtain seedless fruits in parthenocarpic species. Here we describe three techniques to

Hormones are fundamental architects of plant reproduction, orchestrating the transition from pollination to fruit set. Recent advances have underscored the central roles of auxin and gibberellins in ovary growth, seed development, and parthenocarpy, while their intricate interplay with cytokinin, ethylene, abscisic acid, brassinosteroids, jasmonic acid, and salicylic acid fine-tunes early fruit development. A dynamic regulatory network involving transcription factors, miRNAs, and hormone-responsive genes modulates these processes, ensuring coordinated cellular events across diverse fruit types

The use of insecticides based on metabolites found in live organisms, such as the insecticide spinosad, has been an option for the control of agricultural pests because of the allegedly low toxicological risk for nontarget arthropods, such as stingless bees. In the current study, we evaluate the effects of chronic oral exposure to spinosad during the larval phase on survival, developmental time, body mass, midgut epithelial remodeling, and the peritrophic matrix (PM) of Partamona helleri stingless bee workers. Worker larvae that were raised in the laboratory were orally exposed to different co

Use of pesticides in agroecosystems is considered a major cause of bees diversity losses in the Neotropics, where Plebeia emerina (Friese) and Tetragonisca fiebrigi (Schwarz) (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) are wild pollinators of native and crop plants. The aim of this study was to know the acute lethal toxicity of acetamiprid, malathion, phosmet and spinosad insecticides on P. emerina and T. fiebrigi. We obtained the mean concentration and mean lethal dose (LC50 and LD50) and the mean survival of workers after oral and topical exposure to insecticides, respectively. The LC50 values (ng a.i

Plastic production has increased for centuries, with a similar increase in the amount of microplastics released into and accumulating in soils and water bodies, detrimentally affecting organisms. One common transition is via air, during which microplastic particles likely also sediment onto plant parts, e.g., flowers, potentially contaminating floral resources and exposing pollinators to microplastics. In the laboratory, the detrimental effects of such contaminations in sugar water were shown in adult bees, usually honeybees (Apis mellifera), while corresponding experiments with larvae are sti

Nectar spurs are tubular outgrowths of perianth tissue-a key innovation that has evolved many times independently in angiosperms. These novel floral structures are tightly linked to pollination and pollinator shifts may explain their role in increasing diversification rates. In the tribe Antirrhineae (Plantaginaceae), nectar spurs on the ventral petal have convergently evolved four times, in the Kickxia clade, Cymbalaria, Chaenorhinum, and Linaria. Here we explore the molecular mechanism underpinning this convergence, by investigating two Class I KNOX genes (HIRZ and INA) across Antirrhineae.

Simultaneous exposure to thermal stress and agrochemicals represents a realistic yet understudied toxicological scenario for pollinators. Honey bees (Apis mellifera) increasingly face intense heat waves while foraging in pesticide-treated landscapes. Understanding the cumulative impact of these stressors is therefore critical for predicting pollinator health. We investigated the combined effects of simulated heat waves (exposed to 42 °C for two hours over three consecutive days) and chronic sublethal exposure to the neonicotinoid acetamiprid on honey bee immunity and physiology. By subjecting

Transitions from an outcrossing to a selfing mating system may represent an advantage during plant invasions, enabling the production of offspring even in cases of unstable pollinator environments or mate limitation. In this study, we explore the shifts in floral traits associated to the mating system across the distribution range of Datura stramonium, a cosmopolitan invasive weed native from Mexico and surrounding regions. We recorded seven floral traits of 1,945 flowers from 77 populations (12 native and 65 non-native) throughout the world distribution range to analyze their differentiation

The main objectives of this study were to look at bee visitation to some common forage plants that could be used in place of or in conjunction with turfgrasses and to compare establishment methods to increase pollinator forage in turfed landscapes. Bee foraging patterns were assessed on four flower species: white clover (Trifolium repens L.), medium and mammoth red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.), and common selfheal (Prunella vulgaris L. var lanceolata [Barton] Fern.) by conducting quadrat surveys on two floral plots in southern Rhode Island. Nutrition is crucial for bees, impacting their health, survival, and pollination performance in ecosystems and agriculture. Bees get essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, and minerals, primarily from nectar and pollen. Many bee species are experiencing declines linked partially to nutritional stress, often exacerbated by climate change, pesticides, and pathogens, highlighting the need to understand and support optimal bee nutrition to mitigate these stressors. Bumble bees, such as Bombus impatient and Bombus terrestris, essential pollinators in agriculture, are

To measure exposure to neonicotinoid and other pesticides in avian pollinators, we made novel use of cloacal fluid and fecal pellets from rufous (Selasphorus rufus) and Anna's (Calypte anna) hummingbirds living near blueberry fields in the Fraser River Valley and Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. To examine on-farm exposure to pesticides in invertebrate pollinators, we also collected bumble bees native to Canada (Bombus mixtus, Bombus flavifrons, and Bombus melanopygus), their pollen, and blueberry leaves and flowers from within conventionally sprayed and organic blueberry farms.
